Former UFC champion, Georges St. Pierre publicly supports Canadian drug kingpin with letter of support.
Georges St. Pierre may be retired, but he's still making the media rounds pretty regularly and in ways that might not always be so positive. In today's GSP news, he is publicly backing "King of Pot" Jimmy Cournoyer, who happens to be awaiting sentencing here in the good ole US of A. Cournoyer pled guilty to trafficking in huge amounts of marijuana.
St. Pierre sent a letter of support for the drug kingpin who has filed his position on the upcoming sentence hearing in New York. The letter was intended to highlight positive aspects of Jimmy's life, outside of his criminal element.
Cournoyer is reported to have led a lavish lifestyle, often moving in celebrity circles that included GSP and Leonardo DiCaprio. Georges' letter detailed their meeting in 2009, subsequent travels together to exotic locales like Ibiza, and how the two became "like brothers." The letter goes on to say that St. Pierre has visited Jimmy twice since his incarceration and that after he is released, he will always have a place in the former UFC champ's surroundings.
For those of you that might be inclined to think, "Well, it's only pot", it wasn't. Cournoyer also pled guilty to taking part in a conspiracy that dated back to 1998, trafficking at least 100,000 kilos of marijuana, 83 kilos of cocaine and money laundering. He is alleged by the prosecution to have had ties to mafia boss Vito Rizzuto (deceased), and several members of the Matticks clan who have acted as leaders of the West End Gang.
When sentenced, Cournoyer faces a mandatory minimum of 20 years. This is not the first time the 34-year-old has had a run-in with the law. When he was 21 years old, Jimmy was caught in a sting operation where he paid $65,000 to purchase 10,000 ecstasy pills from an undercover police officer. Three years later, a passenger in his Porsche Cayenne was ejected from the vehicle during a crash and died. He ended up with a combined sentence for reckless driving causing death and attempt to purchase ecstasy that was 42 months long.
This current marijuana conspiracy/trafficking case he is currently being sentenced for has continued while serving time in a federal penitentiary in Canada. Excerpts from Georges St. Pierre's letter of support are courtesy of The Montreal Gazette.
My name is Georges St-Pierre, world UFC champion. I am writing this letter regarding my really good friend Jimmy Cournoyer.
We had the time of our life. Jimmy became like a brother to me. We travelled together, we trained together, we were going to restaurants, clubs and having a lot of fun. Jimmy is a very loyal friend who I respect very much.
I've never judged Jimmy. Actually, what he was doing (with) his life wasn't any of my business. We have a very human relationship; we share the same passions, which is sport fitness and martial arts.
His mental toughness will help him go through this very hard ordeal in his life. Jimmy is a very positive and strong person and I am sure he will learn huge lessons about all that. I am giving a lot of support to Jimmy because he deserves it. I told him last time I visited him that when he comes out of jail, I will have a place for him in my surrounding(s),
In an article published by FOX Sports, Cournoyer also pled guilty to witness tampering. Damon Martin reports:
Among the crimes Cournoyer was convicted of included his part in witness tampering and coercion in which he established a $2 million "hit fund" to hire a hit on anyone who decided to testify against him or his co-conspirators in court.
