So, I got a private message from hell..

..regarding my 1st track.

There is local group in my area here in Finland where I live. I posted my first track and then things got really bad.

There is a DJ/producer, who is well known in my area. He's been doing this over a decade and I like many of he's tracks. Those tracks get about 3000-5000 listeners and they are in my opinion very good in old school way.

There's some bit's of he's 2 page "information" about my track Club Is Less.

"..this is what is wrong in todays house. It's all there in your 9 minute puppy poop.

I wouldn't call it a house, not sure it's music either.."

"You wouldn't know what Mackie mixer is even I would hit you with one.."

(I do know what it is and the importance to early sound. My uncle has couple of those..). He also mentioned that something is wrong with my fills during the track and in a educational sense he should hit me with that Mackie in the nice groove so there would be a change that I might learn something.."

"..regarding your main part, it's my honour to tell you that the imitation of funky feeling is sad. Plain and simple."

"Club ain't less kid, in your case it's nothing.."

I'm so hurt. I could't move in a hour or so. It felt like somebody hit me to the chest.

Somebody gave me advice here earlier to join band. I did that and it was good advice. Somebody said that make a track to a specific genre. So I listened lots of good vibey house. I break some of those in my daw. I wanted to make a track that I would like to dance myself. It's pretty long, almost 9 minutes, but thats how I felt it as I was arranging it.

There(GS)is also lot's of discussion about the saturation of electronic music. I'm humble about my music. I want to have fun and learn. I don't need to be next whatever or anything like that.

My track is what it is, but I felt so much good things just making it. Now it's all gone.

So, I had a lunch box pre-amp shootout (Heritage, Neve, 517, GR, Workhorse content)

I was too afraid to post in high end:facepalm:

Got the new "portable" tracking chain set up and did some comparisons.

Mojave 301FET > Heritage 73jr / GR 1mv-500 / RN517 / Neve 1073LB > Lindell comp > Lindell EQ > Babyface. Tried some vocal, acoustic, nylon, DI guitar via Radial JDI... and some EXTC guitar fx patching as a bonus to test the Babyface and TotalMix patching. I'm gonna share....

Radial Six Pack - the routing options are great, feed switch was a saviour for this, front panel direct lines to modules 1 or 4 also very useful. Great build. Lots of screws. External power supply I like. The caddy/tray doesn't really work. None of the non-Radial units I had would clear the tray so I had to take it out. Nice in theory.

(I am very glad I got the Radial. Strangely it does highlight the overall weaknesses in the 500 series concept: the lunchbox idea is not really plug and play, it is very hard to get units in and out, especially the last one!, units are not standard size, the Neve was the biggest I had - and one of the little casing screws had to come out to get it in as the Radial has a slightly narrower "opening" than e.g. the Purple rack... if all units were housed it would make some sense... and why no guide rails like PCI... anyway... the omniport, dual ins/outs, extra front panel ins, Dsubs etc etc all make me very happy with the Six Pack).

Mojave 301FET - very happy with the results on acoustic and nylon guitars with minimal effort.

The preamps - Heritage 1073jr vs Neve 1073lb - I spent most of my time comparing these two, expecting to buy the Heritage and return the others. On vocals, whether more or less driven, I couldn't tell them apart, on mic'd guitars i couldn't either. I wasn't blind so of course I had expectations about the Neve. The two units have different controls and different gain. The Neve was capable of less gain before padding, which I liked:facepalm:. I only noticed differences when I tried the line inputs and then some DI guitar through the mic pre. With my set up the Heritage was noisier at higher gain and I convinced myself that there was something extra in the lows of the Neve.

The GR was fine, seemed like a great unit but I just didn't like the look of it or that it is 2U:facepalm:. The 517 just didn't fit in this company. For a unit with a pre, enhancer, comp and DI it has too few controls for my liking. The lack of output control on the pre for instance when compared to the others.

The Babyface (and the TotalMix software) makes it very easy to direct monitor and add built in e.g. reverb to the cans. There are only stereo 1/2 and headphones 3/4 outs. This means that for reamping or other external processing, while still using the stereo 1/2 for main monitors, you have to use the headphone 3/4. There is a duplicate headphone 3/4 out on a breakout TRS for this purpose. Not ideal but it works.

As well as the Six Pack, I used a Radial JDI (awesome) for some DI guitar, and the Radial 500 series EXTC to try some external guitar FX. This was fine except some problems with some pedals. Others have had this and I think the EXTC doesn't play nicely with some unbuffered pedals. I will find out and report back on the cause.

I am happy. And I am going to be yet another 1073LB user. Until I track down a Germanium or a 583;) kfhkh

So, Bitwig er...?

Not much noise about this, which seems erie after the huge build up.

Is anyone using it, do you all hate it.

I tried it a week or two ago and my estimation of it went up and down and I finally purchased it on Friday.

I think the supplied instruments are quite lacking in comparison to what Ableton offers, even just direct comparisons and ignoring the selection.

The audio clips in bitwig are amazing though, they way you can just drag any audio into an existing clip and then per event edit it, that's a great feature, very tidy and also slice and edit audio within a clip.

While, i'm not too keen on the skin the information is all displayed very sharply and well. This is paramount for me. Anyway, a lot of very nice small touches that sold me on it over updating ableton to 9, very excited to see what I can do with this live and at home with it's modular future in conjunction with a custom Livid controller.

Does anyone else have any nice touches they have noticed to share or a source of good videos, yes I am aware there is a manual but it's often the things found by users that are the best imo.

Also, if anyone wants a good source for psychological studies in fear and envy, just go to the ableton forums and search for bitwig, makes for very entertaining reading, probably should have read the manual instead.
