While one Diaz brother has been gunning for a shot at Matt Brown, UFC President Dana White today revealed it’s the other one that has a chance at the booking.
“Listen, if Nick Diaz wants to come out and fight Brown, I’d do that fight,” White said on Wednesday’s new edition of “UFC Tonight.”
Of course, it’s Nick’s younger brother, Nate (17-9 MMA, 12-7 UFC), who has openly lobbied for the matchup with the streaking Brown (19-11 MMA, 12-5 UFC). But White said he hasn’t even considered that as a possibility. After all, not only would it involve lightweight Diaz moving up a division to accept the fight, it also just doesn’t make sense in terms of recent results.
“We never even considered that fight,” White said. “[Nate Diaz] has lost two of his last three fights, and Brown is on this unbelievable roll.”
So for now, Brown’s next booking is still unclear. “The Immortal,” who in 2012 was hovering around .500 for his career, is certainly due for a big fight. He’s earned seven consecutive wins, six of which have come by knockout.
The elder Diaz (26-9 MMA, 7-6 UFC) would certainly present an intriguing stylistic matchup, as both fighters are loved for their propensity to brawl. But Diaz has been inactive since a March 2013 loss to Georges St-Pierre and hasn’t seemed in any hurry to come back to the cage.
It all comes down to Nick, but if he wants it, White is happy to make the Brown fight happen.
