All, I know that there is a lot of hype that we can be drowned in concerning the "must use" mics that we read about when recording distorted guitar. I'm sure that awesome results have been achieved with all the mics that I'm about to mention, but after many hours of experimenting with the e906, 57, 58, Audix I5, a few condensers, and a few other dynamics, I was surprised to find that my SM7b seemed substantially more capable of capturing what I was hearing when standing in front of the cab. I was curious if many of you had good luck micing a cab with an SM7b, or if my mic - room - preamp chain was just working great together for the SM7b. To make the tone as edgy as possible I bypassed my tube pre and recorded straight to my Focousrite ss pre. Now the one good thing about recording a cab with the SM7b is that, though this mic usually has to really be boosted with a pre, the shear volume from a cab levels the playing field as a pre doesn't have to be cranked so high that color starts becoming a factor, so in the world of possibilities with mics, tubes, pres, etc.... I seemed to be much happier with this mics ability to capture almost exactly what the cab was projecting to our ears. Was just curious if many of you had experimented much with this mic on distorted guitar and if you had similar results.
