Question About Using An Active DI on Vocals In A Live Situation

A band I do sound for added a computer to their live setup. Vocals are being run through it via a Firewire interface. When the vocals come out of the interface (line level) they occasionally have a really bad hum in the signal (ground loop?), so I started running the interface output through a passive direct box.

The direct box cleans up the signal, but the the output of the DI is very low. The preamp on the house PA has to be cranked to bring the signal back up to level.

If I used an active DI, would the signal come out of the DI hotter? If I use a 9V battery to power the DI, how long would the battery normally last? On battery-powered active DI's, do you always have to use an on/off switch on them? (I ask because I'm trying to build the most simple, dummy proof rig possible. I want something where a switch doesn't have to be turned on or off at the beginning and end of each show).

If anyone has suggestions on active DI's that'd be great.
