Thunderbolt alternatives

Hey all!

First some background. Our band run all our instruments, mics and IEM's through an on-stage interface (FF800) in combination with a 8ch pre and Hearback systems. Everything is pre-processed in Cubase, along with guitar amp sims, effect automations and drum triggers. I control the backingtracks from my keyboard rig. We just send 16 ready-to-go channels to FOH for easy level riding and minor EQing. Everything runs super smooth once everything is set up, and soundcheck is usually around 5-10 mins, since the sounds are pretty much done, and everyone controls their own monitor.

The setup is fool proof, and has worked like a charm for both me and two other bands who shares a similar setup. Up until now. Pardon my french, but those fookin' atrocious thunderbolt connectors has now ****ed up two of our live shows at our last tour this winter, something that just isn't allowed to happen. Since apparently one of the thunderbolt connectors has become unstable (probably due to some stagehand being too violent with the cabling).

I have since then replaced the thunderbolt->FW800 adapter, the FW cable, switched to the second thunderbolt port, and I also make sure to duct-tape the adapter in place like it's my last day on earth, for every show.

But I don't think that's a viable or even acceptable solution for the future. Why, for the love of all that is holy, would Apple make such inferior, wiggly, dinky-toy crap connectors!? Both FW and even USB connectors have at least some sort of resemblance of safety and *clunk* feel when you insert them. And they DON'T WIGGLE!

Now, to my question...is there anything I can do? Is there a good option to the thunderbolt connector out there? Stable USB interfaces? Or should I just switch over to PC laptops altogether, to get proper FW connectors? (I'd rather not; I've got two new macbook pro's (one for backup) that cost me a nifty amount).

Sorry about the long rant, I just had to get it out of my system.

Thanks for any input!

/dB
