Everybody always seem to want high gain/low noise preamps to get away from their so-so interface pres. I already got a few high gain, low noise, high quality mic preamps, thank you. Manley, Telefunken, HCL, a few DIY things like JLM audios, Eisen, etc.etc.
Some condenser mics deliver a healthy dose of output, combine that with a loud source and the usual suspects of preamps are input gain knob entirely down or just that and the pad engaged. I'm not a "pad-hater" but there must be a few preamps that (for example ye olde V72 with fixed 34dB) do not have tons of gain. I choose the gear I fiddle with according to the situation at hand and ... (it's Gearslutz, after all!) why not get another preamp that caters to situations where I don't need 60 or 80 dBs of gain...that start with a minimum of 30 dBs and more.
I don't object to DIY stuff either (as long as I at least got a layout and schematic...) or stuff that has some higher gain available but starts with less gain available, like the TAC micpreOne.
