UFC Adopts Nevada’s TRT Ban for Overseas Events

The Ultimate Fighting Championship has followed the lead of the Nevada Athletic Commission, banning the use of testosterone replacement therapy within the promotion, effective immediately.

UFC President Dana White issued a statement Thursday shortly after the NAC’s ruling, revealing that the organization will no longer accept therapeutic use exemptions for TRT when acting as its own regulatory body.

“The Ultimate Fighting Championship fully supports the decision made today by the Nevada State Athletic Commission regarding the immediate termination of therapeutic use exemptions (TUE) for testosterone replacement therapy (TRT),” the statement reads. “We believe our athletes should compete based on their natural abilities and on an even playing field. We also intend to honor this ruling in international markets where, due to a lack of governing bodies, the UFC oversees regulatory efforts for our live events. We encourage all athletic commissions to adopt this ruling.”

The NAC’s decision will have an immediate effect on the sport’s largest promoter, as the UFC plans to hold a middleweight title clash between Chris Weidman and Vitor Belfort on May 10 in Las Vegas. Whether Belfort would apply for a TRT exemption in Nevada had been a widely discussed topic since the fight was announced, though the door has now been shut on that possibility by the state commission.
