On July 5, Jon Fitch and Josh Burkman will settle a trilogy that started eight years ago.
Fitch vs. Burkman 3 has been booked for World Series of Fighting 11, according to WSOF executive vice president Ali Abdel-Aziz. The fight announcement comes a day after WSOF confirmed that Jake Shields withdrew from his fight against Fitch on July 5 due to an injury.
Fitch first submitted Burkman in a UFC Octagon at UFN 4 in April 2006. Burkman then returned the favor in June 2013 with a stunning guillotine choke win in just 41 seconds at WSOF 3. Since then, Fitch is 1-0 in WSOF, while Burkman is 1-1.
Burkman recently had a public dispute with WSOF, however, Abdel-Aziz said those issues are in the past.
"When I called Josh to take the fight he didn't hesitate and said yes right away," Abdel-Aziz said. "He will fight anyone, anywhere, anytime. I have nothing but respect for him."
This marks Fitch's third opponent for the card. Prior to getting matched up with Shields, Fitch was scheduled to fight Rousimar Palhares for the WSOF welterweight title, however, Palhares withdrew from the fight to take care of his sick mother.
WSOF 11, headlined by Justin Gaethje vs. Nick Newell for the lightweight title, has yet to find a location. The promotion is expected to announce that news in the coming days. Also scheduled for the card is Melvin Guillard vs. JZ Cavalcante.
