Top-10 welterweight Jake Ellenberger and seven other fighters received six-month medical suspensions due to injuries sustained at UFC 173, the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) informed MMAFighting.com on Wednesday.

Ellenberger suffered a significant orbital fracture injury during his main card bout against No. 1 contender Robbie Lawler at the pay-per-view event, which took place May 24, 2014 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV. Ellenberger will require clearance from an ophthalmologist for what has been termed a "left inferior wall blowout fracture," or otherwise be required to stay on the sidelines until late-November.

Along with Ellenberger, main card fighters Francisco Rivera and Jamie Varner, along with preliminary card fighters Michael Chiesa, Mitch Clarke, Al Iaquinta, Vinc Pichel and Sam Sicilia also received six-month medical suspensions due to injuries suffered during UFC 173. Varner's injury in particular was gruesome, as the rugged lightweight battled for essentially four minutes on a mangled left leg before doctors stopped his contest against James Krause.

In addition, the NSAC handed down modest suspensions to nine fighters, as former UFC bantamweight champion Renan Barao, Dan Henderson and Katsunori Kikuno all received 45-day sentences, while new UFC bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw, Takeya Mizugaki, Francisco Trinaldo, Anthony Njokuani, Jingliang Li and David Michaud all received suspensions of the 30-day variety.
