Theres more than a few holes in todays accepted reffere etiquette and I think Steve Mazzagatti with all his abundant flaws about him, might be the best ref we have in Mixed Martial Arts.
I've been a vocal critique of Mazzaghetti since the Brock Lesnar debut debacle. Deducting a point without a warning and sleeping on the tap out are glaring lapses in judgement if you ask me. Rhetrospect goggles in place however, the other thing on display was fearless conviction. In a match that garnered a huge amount of attention Mazzagatti wasn't afraid to make what was certain to be a controversial call and I think that might outweigh his questionable judgement.
But why now though did I come to this conclusion and feet the urge to make a thread about it? Easy answer: John Jones. The blatant eye pokes have been bothering me, not only for the act itself but for what it represents. So I took to twiiter and had a brief exchange with legendary MMA refferee Big John McCarthy:

There is a weakness in the way refs officiate that I feel is tied to stength of character. The most egregious holes in the current MMA ref game are unwillingness to assign blame for the following violations in no particular order:
* Eye Pokes
* Groin Strikes
* illegal Blows during finnishing flurries
Current MMA etiquette dictates that refs shouldn't make controversial calls if it might effect the outcome of the match, and thats total bullshit. The thing is, after the twitter exchange I had to ask myself; which ref do I know of that wouldn't hesitate to deduct a point for the first instance of a John Jones eye poke if he believed it was intentional or even just negligent? The only answer that came was Steve Mazzagatti. He already disqualified Jones rightfully for throwing illegal elbows during a finnish. I applauded the call then and I do it now.
Ok, ok... all things considered he might not be the best overall ref in MMA, but he might have the most integrity right?... What say you?
