I've been meaning to make this thread for a while. I want to hear what you guys think about this topic. I will say that this is not a massive part of the sport for me but it does make a difference when watching events to have quality commentators that bring a good level of service and chemistry. I know casual fans wouldn't take too much notice of it but we here on the share aren't just casual fans are we ? We are the kind of fans who like to scrutinize, praise, and enjoy the sport wherever we can. And so on to my rambling...
There is always talk brushing over the topic of commentating in the UFC on the forum. More often than not the talk on here seems to be critical of one man in particular - Mike 'calamity' Goldberg, and for good reason. I have been critical and unimpressed with Goldberg's role in the organisation for a long time but now with the arrival of Dan Hardy as colour commentator as part of the all British broadcasting team I am finding it easier to spot the flaws that I feel Rogan the other broadcasting team bring with them too.
Going solely by the opinions on this forum, KenFlo and Anik haven't been received greatly. Whatever chemistry and skills they bring to their job are lost on me too. I understand KenFlo's expertise and experience should put him in a great position to be a superb commentator but his shout it out loud nature and over-excitement really put me off during a fight. Pair that with Anik's all round terrible package and you have a commentating team that actually take some of my focus off the sporting action and direct it towards cringing at the pair of them.
Goldberg and Rogan are the classic guard and really are big faces in the organisation's brand. I've never really had too much of a problem with Rogan's commentating style. His knowledge of the game can't be questioned and he keeps things ticking along pretty well. The main problem I have with this pairing is the other half of it. Goldberg and Rogan have good chemistry and have had plenty of experience on the job but it seems to me that their style is more and more lacking in a very necessary professional aspect. I can't exactly put my finger on it but I feel that their boots don't fit anymore. I find myself noticing the pointless turns and runs that conversation between the two takes as well as the Bias of both. Using the word Bias here is a bit broad. I think Rogan can be Bias in a number of ways. I think more often he is bias towards one athlete because of his preconceptions of how a fight will go and not they are a personal favourite, he tries to play smart and be one step ahead, a tactic that can work and be impressive sometimes but is a waste of words mostly. Can be both though. Also he has been heard shouting directions to the action almost like a cornerman while the fight is near is booth. That's not on.
As i said, a real pushing factor of this thinking is the arrival of The Outlaw. Always a favourite fighter of mine but I wasn't convinced he would make the greatest of commentators. I thought that he would be trying too hard to match up to his American counterparts in style and volume. What a pleasant surprise to watch an event with the British commentating team and be thoroughly impressed all round. There's a few angles from which I can admire Hardy's commentating. He has the professional experience of a long successful career in the organisation so he knows as good as any what it is like to be in there. He knows as good as KenFlo who shares this experience but Hardy far excels in the booth. He knows as good as Rogan who has a great vision of the action and is able to explain and paint it out with words very well but still Hardy excels in the booth. The reasons why he excels in my opinion are his style and knowledge and his strong basic attitude towards commentating. Hardy is very measured when commentating. He doesn't get over-excited and start balling every time a hook lands. Where Rogan's style likes to educate viewers, Hardy's does too but with a much more subtle flair blended in to conversation with his partner John Gooden. He is patient and isn't afraid to leave a gap of silence that the other teams seem so afraid to do, jumping in with drivel as soon as they realize they haven't spoken in five seconds. To put it in short, Dan Hardy calls what he sees with no bias and no rush. He is easy to follow and compliments the action considerably more than any other commentator I have heard. Add the fact the he has a great partner in John Gooden who shares the same good attributes Hardy does.
I will admit, yes I am Scottish which makes me British (hopefully not by September this year) and I have grown up watching football (soccer if you please) with British commentators. I watched all sports with British commentators and Hardy's style is the first in MMA to make me realize that those before him did nothing for me on a professional level for the legitimacy of the sport. I'm not against Americans in any way but I do rate British commentators highly over Americans. It's just where I'm from and it's how i know people to talk. The American way is just too much for me and tries too hard to make itself heard. On the other hand, Hardy and Gooden represent the hope for everything I want MMA commentating to be.
Before Hardy joined the com crew here is what he had to say: “I’m very excited to be putting on the headset for the UFC. I’ve got the same nerves and butterflies that I had when I first signed for the company as a fighter back in 2008. I think I can bring a great perspective to the color commentator’s role. Researching and breaking down UFC fighters and fights is what I’ve been doing for over 10 years now, only now I am not just concentrating on my own division, but every division. I think I bring a different perspective to the role. Not only have I fought and trained with some of the best fighters in the world, I think I’ve had one of the most varied careers in the history of the UFC.
I think he has delivered and personally I would love to hear him commentating on all fights. Salvation lies with the Outlaw.
