With all the year end sales, I somehow ended up with a license for the Waves API2500 even though I already have the hardware. I had so much fun guessing wrong in one of the comparisons here a couple of months ago (and even more fun reading the threads) that I thought I'd do my own comparison. I had a few seconds of distorted guitar - octaves, wideband, not something I'd really worry about compressing in any event, but, there it was...
So I picked the "Rythm Guitar" (that's how it's spelled) preset in the plugin, and then matched the settings on my hardware. I noticed a difference, but it was hard to say it was a difference I cared about.
The reason I'm posting is that my 8 year old daughter happened to be close by and so I asked her to listen. She very promptly said she preferred the hardware :) - her comment was that the plugin was "deeper" sounding, and the hardware was "hollower" sounding, and she preferred the hollower sound - she confirmed her position upon listening to the dry playback. She received no prompting, and she wouldn't know or care if I explained to her what was going on.
Here are the files - do you have as good an ear as a second grader?
