Creating A High End Signal Path For Balinese Instrument Recordings

Hi and Happy New Year everyone,

I have a particular recording project and wish to buy high-end gear especially for it.

I don't want to record in a professional studio because I want the luxury to record as many takes as I want, overdubs, etc... over a long period of time. My hope is to buy gear for 5000$ or less and still be able to get a very decent sound with the luxury of recording at home.

I want to record Balinese Gender Wayang. This is a set of four instruments each with 10 bronze keys that are struck with 2 wooden mallets. Wood on metal. My idea is to record all the instruments myself using overdubs. Here are some youtube examples of those instruments. With 2 instruments (

) With 4 instruments (

)

I already have a good computer and great monitors. What I need is the recording signal path. I was thinking - Mic + preamp + A/D converter -> computer. Not sure if I need any other components? I'm also debating if I should record in mono or with 2 mics. 1 mic should be enough, but with 2 I could have a close mic + pick up some room sound. However, I will choose quality of the signal path over having 2 mics. So, if adding a mic is too expensive, I'd rather spend on one signal path that will be amazing.

My problem is choosing the correct mic, preamp and converter(s) for what I want to record. Since it's a particular instrument (wood on metal) I imagine I should perhaps choose specific pieces of equipment. Ideally, I would test many mics and preamps before buying, but I'm not sure where I would be able to do that (perhaps some music store (I am in Montreal)).

For a converter, I was looking at the Burl 2 channel A/D Bomber. I have no idea what mic would be best for that type of instrument. Same with a preamp.

Can you guys give me a few ideas? Just kind of nudge me in some direction. The sound is a bit like a vibraphone, but a tad harsher.

I'll be using this setup for years to come (to record this ensemble). So, I don't mind spending. I'm hoping 5000$ or under, but would go a bit more if it was really worth it.
