Thomas Newman: breaking down his sound

I really started following film music after hearing Thomas Newman... over the years he's someone I've returned too as an influence. Great melody. Interesting orchestrations. Etc.

People tend to simplify his sound with statements like "he uses lots of sordino and oboe" (which is true) but it oversimplifies it. Even with sordino, his string sounds are unique.... I think it's attributed to his orchestration and approach to the mix/placement of sounds.

I can't find any T.Newman scores though... very few articles dig into the techniques... I did find a thesis written on his style but it's a hardcopy locked away in Julliard.

I don't imagine we can breakdown the Thomas Newman sound here... but if anyone has any information about his style, links to articles, (dare I ask) or know where a conductor's score might be... I'm interested.

The score that's got me fired up again... Lemony Snickets Series of Unfortunate Events. There are so many details and layers of goodness in that soundtrack. It kills me... Check it out some time.
