Which Toontrack EZX will be best to get a kit that sounds like this?

I'm planning to get a new EZX. Can anyone here help decide which EZX sounds closest to the kit played on this song? (or by this band in general)

Thanks a lot!

Moog Prodigy: Buying one?

Hello,

I have been offered a Moog Prodigy. It is an early model, Nr. 2420, model 336a from a professional studio in good shape. It was equipped with CV inputs an european power cord later.

I read somewhere, that the osc on the early models tend to be unstable and that they are better on the later model 336b(x). Can somebody approve this?

What else should I be careful about when buying one?

Thx.

Powering an Ampeg 8x10 cab with a Power Amp

Hi all,

I’m using an Ampeg 8x10 Bass Cab to play my drum machine for my live show and I have no idea how to power it properly.

I am aware that it's going to sound muddy, but it's the best I can do at the moment.

Ampeg SVT-810E Specs:

LF Drivers: 8 x 10”

Voice Coil: 2”

Magnet Weight (each): 30 oz

RMS Power Handling: 2 x 400-Watts (Stereo)

RMS Power Handling: 800-Watts (Mono)

Frequency Response (-3dB): 58Hz-5kHz

Usable Low Frequency (-10dB): 40Hz

Nominal Impedance: 2 x 8-Ohms (Stereo)

Nominal Impedance: 4-Ohms (Mono)

Sensitivity: 100dB

Maximum SPL: 130dB

Dimensions (W x H x D inches): 26 x 48 x 16

Shipping Weight: 165 Pounds

Handling Weight: 140 Pounds

So from the research I’ve done, wattage and Ohms are big things to consider when looking to power this speaker.

I’ve heard that the formula for watts is that it should be 2x more watts than the speaker provides (for overhead). Since I’ll be using the speaker in stereo, 400 watts x 2 = I need an amp with at least 800 watts of power, right?

Secondly, I’ve read you divide the Ohms of the speaker in stereo by 2. So with 2 x 8-Ohms (stereo) = I’d need an amp outputting at 4 Ohms, right?

I plan on buying a mixer too so I can put drum machine, synth, vocals on each channel and mix accordingly. I’m not sure how that plays into everything if the mixer is powered or not.

My budget for both the mixer and amp is about $600. I’m poor.

Am I on the right track? Any recommendations?

Thank you so much!!

James

Will Joe Walsh have to die to get the respect he deserves?

IMO the guy is up there with the John Lennon's and Jim Morrison's and Jimi Hendrix's of the world, if not even more consistently great than those guys in terms of musical output.

Yet Joe Walsh could walk into most Music shops even and nobody would recognize who he is.

Seriously. I've worked at 2 guitar shops and I know for a fact Joe Walsh could have walked in there and only me and one other guy would recognize him.

What is the deal with that?

Tritik TK Delay

  • Plugin: TK Delay

  • Developer: Tritik

  • Formats: VST, AU, AAX (Win/Mac, 32/64-bit)

  • Price: $29 euro

  • Website: Tritik | TkDelay

Foreword

There is no shortage of good delays out there. To be very honest most of our DAW’s stock delays are very good, and even are in fact quite spectacular like Logic’s Delay Designer. Among the crowd some names emerge, such as Soundtoys Echoboy, the Eventide offerings and some welcome newcomers such as Valhalla and Exponential Audio (even though the later is brought by the industry veteran Michael Carnes). It is very hard (if possible) not to have a good delay these days, but when a well-featured delay arrives with a Reaper-esque licensing policy we have to take a look at it, and that’s what the one-man company Tritik is bringing to the table with it’s debut in the plugin universe.

Enter the TK Delay

TK Delay is a very well-rounded plugin. Besides what you expect from a decent stereo delay like separate L-R timings, feedback and so on, TK offers a flexible LP/HP/BPM filter with two routing options and LFO-based modulation, a one-knob distortion and a dual-mono frequency shifter, a reverse knob for injecting reversed-sounding feedback and linked/unlinked parameters on anything that asks for it. TK also offers a knob that allows for ping-pong and direct delays and anything in between those. Last but not least, TK has a fully-resizable interface...with two (light/dark grey) colors! That's not all: one features that stands is the lock parameter window, which allows users to lock certain parameters through their preset browsing. Very useful when you're already set for certain things such as timings and filters but will resort to presets for further inspiration.

When it comes to sound quality, Tritik managed to bring a clean and very neutral delay, or at least until the filter, overdrive and frequency shifter are brought into play. Then it get very interesting and cover a good chunk ground with a sonic range that can get very dirty and nasty if required. We're not talking Echoboy levels of flexibility and character possibilities, but TK can do quite a lot of tricks, especially if some mangling is required and the combo of filter, overdrive and shifter can deliver a lot in that regard.

TK Delay is by no means this is a "sound designer" delay, and even though it can be useful on such tasks it might lack the depth of some other offerings. Overall this is a remarkable plugin with very interest possibilities that will be very useful for musicians, producers and mixers looking for a straightforward delay that sounds great without requiring a bunch of tweaking.

In terms of performance this is a plugin hits the CPU very gently and was very stable throughout my tests. The provided documentation is good and support is quite responsive as far as one-man companies goes.

The verdict

TK Delay gets a resounding recommendation from this reviewer. When you have a demo that is uncrippled and fully-functional to the point of saving your settings you have to at least give it a try! There’s absolutely no excuse not to try this plugin and actually very few not to have it in folder, even if you’re on a non-existent budget.

Detailed scores

  • Sound Quality - 4/5 because 5/5 is Echoboy and its huge sonic palette. TK Delay sounds very good even though it can do a bit less than some other offerings.

  • Ease of use - 5/5 which could actually be 6/5! Very clean and resizable interface with zero clutter and intuitive controls.

  • Features - 4/5 because again, Echoboy just trumps nearly everything in this department. I'd also add the Eventide H3000 plugin to this 5/5 category.

  • Bang for buck - 5/5 which again, could easily be more. You can get it for free but you can hand Charles (the developer) 29 euros if the nag screen annoys you enough or if you just feel like rewarding his great efforts!

Who has all the Trident DiAns?

Hello Slutz

I'm currently looking for a studio with a Trident DiAn.

I have heard that all but one of them were acquired by a studio in Europe, possibly somewhere in the Netherlands.

It would be great if any of you guys could share any info that could help narrow this search down.

Many thanks in advance for you time and help.

Plugging a bass and a keyboard into the same amp.

Been browsing and can't find anything.

I'm wondering what the best way to plug multiple sources into the same amp would be.

So like Bass, Keyboard, Sampler all going into a bass amp.

I know I'd be mixing and matching impedance, but is there a neat and tidy way of doing this?

The only thing that comes to mind is plugging everything into a mixer and sending the mixer to the amp.

thoughts?

In the Market for a New Audio interface, bought Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and returning

I'm looking for a new audio interface that is under $300. I record music on my guitar and sing songs with a mic, I recently bought some JBL LSR 305s and am looking for a good audio interface to complement them. THe Scarlett 2i2 just didn't have enough power for my guitar and would clip and really low volumes. Comparing it to my roommates old Native Instruments Audio Kontrol 1 and the sound was much cleaner going through his box and wouldn't clip at low volumes. I've been researching the New version Complete Audio 6 but there has been lots of problems that I've read with audio popping and crackling especially with windows. The roland quad capture looked intriguing but I don't know how clean the sound is compared to the Audio Kontrol 1 or Komplete Audio 6.

Looking for an interface that will work well with windows, not clip with my electric guitar and, sounds super duper clean.

What should I get?

Two questions about PA speakers

Hi folks,

I have a 400 watt PA Peavey cab with woofer and horn. The horn kept getting blown, then I realized that I made a mistake, the power amp is 600 watts. I already have the enclosure I want, so I figured I would just upgrade the speaker and horn at the same time.

* What frequency range should the woofer be, generally? I was considering buying this:

Eminence Kappa-15LFA 15" Low Frequency Driver 8 Ohm

since it got great reviews and is a great price. 2700 Hz is the top of the frequency response. Is that generally reasonable? Looks like the horns generally go down to around 1k, so it seems to make sense, just wanted to make sure it would work.

* How many watts does the horn need to be able to handle? I know the woofer generally needs to handle most of the power, but how do I calculate that? (power handling vs frequency) How do I tell if the horn driver is compatible with the actual horn? Is it a dimensional thing?

Thanks!!

2x bricasti and a joker (M7's companion)

Let's say: there is enough budget for "only" two pieces of bricasti m7.

In order to use 3 reverb types within one mix (from pop to jazz):

1. one unit for rooms/early refl.

2. one unit for plates

3. one unit for halls

Questions:

1. Which roles would you put your two bricasti m7 in: 1&2, 2&3, 1&3?

2.1. Which THIRD reverb (Hardware) under 800$ would you consider for that empty place?

2.2. A THIRD reverb (Plugin)?

multiple ilok dongles: studio and home

Got 2 computers:

1. MacPro at studio

2. MacBookPro at home.

My ilok dongle is usually plugged into my MacPro at my studio.

In order to mix at home, I usually plug out the dongle, put it into my pocket and plug into MacBookPro at home. Yesterday I noticed that it has disappeared! Oh, boy, it took much time to find it again. OK, I've bought this Zero backup stuff at Ilok.com today, but then again:

Now I'm afraid to plug out the dongle. Don't wanna lose it again. Somehow this world became complicated. Too much dongles, cards, keys… "I got a feeling, I'm not the only one".

Can I buy another ilok dongle, register a new ilok account and plug it into my 2nd computer? Then just transfer licences from one account to another online, when changing location - like I use to do with my Waves plugs? Technically feasible and legally allowed?

How do you manage this? I realy like decapitator, Slate Digital etc. There has to be a way to simplify this…

Is it better recording an acoustic as dry as possible if you are adding reverb?

If you have a medium sized room and you position the player and mic in the middle, there will be some room sound in the take. Obviously if the room has absorption and a cardiod mic is being used, there will be less room sound but there will be "some" round sound. Is it not better to try get the take as dry as possible if you are going to be adding reverb else you will have natural room sound and added reverb digitally. Isn't that "unatural"?

Question about Oberheim OB12 (owners or ex owners only)

Hi,

I live in a country with 220V and I have seen most of the auctions on EBay coming from USA and Canada. Do you know if there is a switch or something to regulate the Voltage?, or does this uses an external power adapter?.

Also, any experience with this machine compared with other VAs in the market?, good or bad experiences?

EzDrummer 2 w/ Akai MPK

I've recently started using EzDrummer2 in as well as Logic X and I was hoping to find a way to assign the most important drums to the pads on my Akai MPK Mini.

Currently when in ED2 the kick is on one of the keys when I'd rather have it on a pad. I have the software they came with the Akai but I'm not sure if it should be changed from there or within the DAW.

Has anyone else found this to be an issue?

Interesting experiment last night....

So I was browsing through youtube vids last night when I stumbled on a channel aimed at making really "vintage" sort of lo-fi style recordings. The guy was using an old pioneer sr101 tube reverb as a tube color stage without the reverb on before recording back to his daw. It sounded really cool, so I decided to pull out my old 70's JVC receiver. My JVC isn't tube, but I remember really liking the tone of that thing, especially with the cool slider eq's it has. I ran audio out of my Apollo into the aux in. Since there are no outs on the receiver besides the speaker connects, I used a trs to ts/ts insert cable, and ran the audio out of the headphone jack back into two heritage 1073 di's. After some experimenting with gain staging I was rather impressed with the JVC imparting it's tone and color onto my recording. Instead of my monitors sounding like my daw, they reminded me of listening to music through that old receiver. Looking at the audio in voxengo span showed a very sweet roll off of high end (even with the highs boosted on the JVC) from about 10k down. Very pleasant compared to the daw mix which rolled off closer to 20k. The JVC also added a really pleasant distortion when gain staged properly, and a crazy disgusting kind of cool overdrive when pushed really hard. I can't see myself using it that often, but for adding "analogue mojo" or "warmth", and all the other gearslutz buzzwords around here, the JVC got me pretty close to nailing some of those tones I know we all chase at some point while recording. I'll post some audio later when I get back to the studio, but I just wanted to share my experience while I had it in my head. Here's a link to the youtube channel that inspired me in case anyone is interested.

X-Form / TCE Issue 24fps -> 23.976

Cross post from DUC in the hopes to get some more eyes on this…

Hi All - Having a weird issue I hope is just operator error - hoping to confirm my workflow.

I'm making a D&E mix for a client and they want it delivered at 23.976. I made the D&E from my stems in the 24fps session. Everything was done at 24 and then converted to 23.976 in a separate session. I used the time shift plugin (audio suite) to go from 24 to 23.976.

The issue: When I take the 24fps full mix and null it against the 24fps D&E, all I get is music - perfect. Just what you would expect. When I take the 23.976 mix and null it against the 23.976 converted D&E, its WAY out of sync (up to 1200 samples) and I can hear everything - Dx, Mx, SFX. . I'm sure I'm not on varispeed in the time shift plug. I've tried it with x-form too and had similar results. X-Form got closer, but it still didn't null to just leave the music.

To confirm the 24->23.976 workflow, I took a new 24fps full mix and ran it through the time-shift plug in. I nulled this against the final delivery 23.976 full mix I sent - perfect null.

Any thoughts on this would be great. I've tried this in 10+CPTK and 11HD - same results.

Connection problem between macbook pro and external monitor

i finally went out and got an extra monitor for my track mixer window in rather logic or pro tools. I have a macbook pro 2011 i believe. I am running a USB to female VGA adapter and then plugging VGA cord into it and plugging other end to the monitor. It won't read to my macbook and won't show up in Display settings. I tried doing it with another monitor in my bedroom and it also didn't read. Is it because i need to use a mini display port to VGA adapter? can someone explain why this is happening?

Need advice

Hey guys. I recently purchased some warm audio gear. wa12 & wa76. For vocals I use a ksm44. The 44 is awesome on my wife's vocals, not so much on mine. My voice sounds very close to a Steve Earle style. I tend to sing a bit loud and have a course/raspy style. The ksm44 just isn't working. Too hard to tame my recorded vocal. So question. RE20 or SM7B? I no way to do a shoot out of the two. Thanks guys.

Focusrite 6i6 - mirroring outputs to 2 sets of monitors?

Hi,

Here's what I want to do... I have 2 sets of monitors. These are connected to outputs 1/2 and 3/4 on the Focusrite.

Traditionally I manage the volume of the monitors on 1/2 with the hardware knob on the front of the 6i6. The monitors on 3/4 I have to operate with the software volume knob from in MixControl.

What I need is for a certain application, to have the outputs of 1/2 and 3/4 at exactly the same level - i.e. controlled maybe from *just* the knob in MixControl.

Is this possible? I need it for a loopback application, which relies on the outputs from both of these stereo pairs (1/2 and 3/4) to be exactly the same level.

Any help much appreciated!

Thanks

Watching this with great interest, as it's a reverse of our typical recording scenario, which would have the conductor's back facing us, and trying to discern the mic setup. Is it a very widely spaced Decca Tree, with the centre mic reaching well into the centre of the orchestra (and tantalizingly out of shot at all times !) Or, perhaps that out of shot forward-reaching boom arm holds the 'Tree Trio' and we're seeing the outriggers plus a spot mic over the soloist.

With a fast finger trigger on the pause button, what do you perceive ? As Tony F has been posting here recently, hopefully he might be able to verify for us himself ?

Home studio 8, 12, 16 channel mixer - suggestions?

Previously my set up was so 'in the box' I never thought I'd be in the market for a mixer, however over the past year or so I've been adding numerous bits of hardware.

I've got a Moog Minitar, Korg Volca Keys & Bass, Jomox M-Base, Revox B77 Tape Machine (tracking to for 'vibe'), Technics 1210 deck, SE Electronics 4400 condenser mic. I have an Apogee Duet, as nice as the A/D converters are, I'm currently very limited by it's 2 in's/2 out's.

I'm looking to buy a mixer for the extra inputs/outputs, my budgets around £200-£300. I was looking at the Mackie ProFX series, but have since read some really bad reviews of that product range.

I've just been looking at the Allen & Heath ZED60 range and the Yamaha MG/MW range.

Any others people wanna chuck in the mix? I've looked at some Behringer stuff, but only seem to read bad reviews of the cheaper Behringer mixers.

New Junger/Flux level plugin... interesting…

Flux:: sound and picture development

Well, that's rather interesting… What do you guys think? Will it have an impact? Junger has a good reputation with this sort of thing. It's somewhat expensive, but not surprising considering the pedigree, and a lot less than a hardware piece. I'm certainly not opposed expensive software when a lot went into its development and it can make a real difference to my work. I think it's great to have developers giving attention to the high-end.

Thank you

Can performers join organizations like ASCAP and BMI?

I am posting this here because I am coming up short on an relevant information on both ASCAP's and BMI's websites, along with the rest of GS. I am not a composer, song writer, or publisher. I am a performer and from what I can gather, performers are not able to join these performing rights organizations. Am I miss informed?

Am I overlooking a major performing rights organization that includes performers? I realize performers are sometimes considered the "hired help" compared to the composers, songwriters, and publishing houses of the world and do not collect royalties, but it seems we are a major piece to this art we call "music." :amaze:

I know professionals on this forum work with performers who are independent of a major orchestras and ensembles. If you have any information on the topic, I would love to hear it. Thank you! jkthtyrt

Picked this up after hearing it was an all analog multi-effects! Not disappointed. The overdrives are a lot better than the COSM stuff in later pedals.

Not totally familiar with using it yet. Regarding Manual Mode — couldn't you essentially do the same thing with Edit mode?

Hello Gearslutz!!!

Hi Gearslutz community! I've known about you guys for a long time, and how this is the space to go to first if you have any questions. I'm a composer based in Canada and I hope to find some answers to the many questions I have in your board. All the best!

Hello Gearslutz!!!

advice 4 plugin that detects the key of a drum hit?

Use my ears you say.... OK....Whether or not I have perfect pitch (I might) I am not getting the results I want quickly enough, and sometimes to be honest I don't get it in the right key period for whatever reason. (lets get that out the way)

Hey Gearslutz, I am looking for a vst plugin (more then likely an analyzer of some sort) that can detect the pitch of a drum hit.

I have lots of single hits (like a snare, cymbal, crash) and I can never seem to get them tuned quickly enough to where I don't lose my vibe while producing a song.

So I am looking for something that...

A. IS A VST.DLL PLUGIN that can be used in MULTIPLE DAWS ( i dont want to have to download bitwig or studio one etc just so i can use a plugin that comes standard within the program, I want to use my daw of choice with the plugin)

B. works visually by detecting and giving the key of a drum sample...

C. can be done/get the key of the sample quickly....QUICKLY in regards to workflow while producing a song

D. works on windows OS

I know this has been discussed before, I have read multiple threads, however none of the threads I have come across have actually shown me a plugin that I have actually enjoyed working with (tried some demos, wasn't happy).

Advice please? Know of a plugin that does a.b.c.d? What are you using personally?

Hopefully it does not cost an arm and a leg, however any advice you have might do me some good, looking forward to your replies.

Thanks.

I work ITB with many plug ins - should I work in 48 or 96?

Hello,

My computer is relatively fast. I work with many many plug ins and have been currently working in 48. For the sample rate it goes up to 1024...

I recently saw how working in 96 lets u work up to 2048, which means more plug in power?

BUT then I heard 96 can be more of a workhorse for plug ins?

Which is the best for ITB? Is the only downfall of working in 96 larger file sizes or does it actually hurt your plug in power?

Thanks

Help!! HDSP 9652 + Motu 8pre in Windows 7 64bit

Hi,

I just installed my first RME product on a Windows 7 ultimate 64bit system and all seems to have gone swimmingly. I rebooted and TotalMix has appeared on my screen.

Essentially for the time being I would like to use my Motu 8pre as my input and output stage via TOSLINK. At present I only have 1 TOSLINK cable which I am trying to use as an output from the 9652 card. What I have done is ADAT on the card to ADAT in on the Motu 8 pre. I don't know how to set up the inputs and outputs in TotalMix or my DAW (Reaper 4) so would love it if someone could guide me through the process. Any help whatsoever would be great!

Thanks

automation curving not working with certain parameters!

hiii - i am using mobius looping plugin within Logic and trying to create automation for the "Output" parameter. this parameter has a value between 0-127... and when i try to automate it there is no way to make slanted or curved lines, even with the automation curve tool; it only will draw automation in block-like segments. is there a way to fix this?

i know i could just map it to a fader and curve it by virtue of having many small points (even though this still wouldn't be as smooth as I'm hoping), but id prefer to be able to change some type of setting that allows me to curve this parameter. any thoughts?

I'm going to test the NUVO N22 in a studio this week to see if I want to buy it. What are things I should do? I can listen and say it's great, but my other microphone (CS600) also sounded great till I was pointed to the fact that the hyped high frequencies will make it very difficult to work on the audio.

So, any tips?

Country/guitar fingering loops? how?

Hi!

I'm interested in making something similar to Avicii's banjo/ukulele/acoustic guitar sound. How does he make this?

Is it possible via plugins?

you can hear it here:

http://ift.tt/1BEp3YN

I found some great ukulele plugins that sound similar (8dio Ukulele Strummer). But what instruments do you think is involved in this guitar loop?

Is it a banjo or ukulele and an acoustic guitar? It's hard to tell. HELP PLEASE!

btw this title is wrong, it isn't avicii, it's only Steve aoki on this song. I doubt they take the time and record real live instruments for all the tracks they produce, I know they do for some tracks though.. but there must be some VST or something?

I've tried to experiment with guitarloops and stuff but it doesn't sound good at all. And usually there's a chordprogression going on the loops, such as guitar chordprogression or they add a piano sling or something over the top of it.

I really want to experiment with this folk music house style! Please give me tips and tricks on this matter. HIGHLY appreciated! thanks.

My computer has 32gb of ram and is crashing with 1 instance of superior drummer

Hi,

I have a hackintosh with 3.5ghz intel core i7, 32gb ram, 1600mhz ddr3. I use protools 10, superior drummer 2, and amplitube 3.

I'd say my computer specs are pretty good. But I'm ALWAYS having trouble with memory in pro tools! so many crashes all the time because of it, and I don't know why.

My playback engine is 1024, 8 processors, cpu 90%. -- for this particular project, I can't change the delay compensation from none to anything...it will crash every time.

Even if I boot up my project with all the plug ins bypassed, it will still crash, if I try and change the delay compensation.

For this project, I'm using one track of superior drummer and 6 guitar sims. I've never had much experience checking memory/cpu before on my computer. I just opened up activity monitor (which I've never used before).

I only have pro tools, email, and google chrome active. my pro tools says the cpu is at 348% ? past 100? how high does it go? lol

Also in activity monitor under FREE it says 19gb....so why is pro tools crashing on memory??

Embedding Metadata and ISRC into final master

Hi guys, I am a bit of a novice, so excuse my ignorance. I have trawled the boards looking for a specific answer to this question but it mostly seems to go off on a tangent. Some have suggested Toast in the other threads, but apparently some CD players have had trouble reading the CD text? Any help here would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Hardware Stereo Limiter with stereo knob

For his D-Bus M. Brauer uses Edward the compressor:

It has a stereo knob, which helps to widen the reverbs, FX, back vocals, going through the bus:

Is there some alternative to Edward – with the similar stereo widening?

It has to be a hardware – 19' or 500 series; and available in Switzerland, Germany or Austria. There are lots of cool things in Australia, USA etc. but not easy to order from here (Zurich): some local suppliers with pure 20y old websites and 2months shipping time…

If I don't find anything suitable as one unit, I'd get a clean limiter and maybe a SPL ms-master:

Good orchestral library for fast "broad strokes" work?

Greetings fellow media-musicians :)

My work thus far has only skirted around the fringes of the orchestral sound, such that I've been able to get away with the Komplete library. The Kontakt factory VSL stuff is not too bad, and Session Strings has some nice sounding patches also. They've done the job thus far!

But now it looks as if an upcoming project might force me to finally delve into that realm a bit more deeply, and I'm not sure which libraries to go with. There are a few that come very highly recommended, but I'm reading comments about some of them which seem to suggest they require a lot of editing & layering to get the best results from. That's well and good, but I'm looking to score a large number of animated TV episodes on a VERY tight turnaround, so I'm really hoping for something that'll let me play in broad strokes as efficiently as possible. I'm reasonably adept at the keyboard, I don't need to generate sheets for live players, & I don't need to fool the purists into thinking I recorded a live orchestra. I just want something that sounds "pretty damn good" to a layperson and will let me flesh out a broad-strokes score as fast as possible.

Something like Garritan's Instant Orchestra would be fantastic, but the audio demos aren't setting my heart alight - very synthy sounding. Is there an equivalent that's a notch or two up the quality ladder?

Thanks folks :)

Sup!

Anyone care to recommend some great libraries for this type of percussion? Preferably newer ones.

Ideally libraries with great sampled darbuka, tablas and dhols. I already a bunch of percussion libraries but the only two who have a few ethnic sets are HZ01 and Drums of war 2. HZ01 is great, but it's not ideal as their exotic drums are range are small. And.. DoW 2 well there's not that great to begin with.

If all else fails, I'll probably just end up just buying the real instruments and sampling.

I really want to purchase an 808 however...

My wife is leery on us throwing down three to four grand on a drum machine that's over 30 years old that could have issues later on. So I'm wondering if there are any 808 owners who could tell me how reliable their 808s are and if there are any issues that do come up, who I can send it to for repairs if need be.

I refuse to purchase the TR-8 so that response can be stopped right away.

Is this the most proper plugin arrangement/ chain for mixing and mastering?

Hi,

I've been really trying to find on the internet the best plugin arrangement for mixing and mastering, but surprisingly I'm having a hard time finding a straightforward chain for the best set up. Im trying not to talk specific plug ins, but more of the arrangement of each plugin's purpose. I found very bare stuff online stuff like eq and compress then limit etc etc, but nothing more specific in the chain, like the arrangement of where tape saturation , distortion, stereo widening, post eq, corrective eq, and all that goes. Here is my current chain, which I would like you to look over:

• 0 - the raw recording

• 1 - console emulation (such as vcc..should this be 1st or last?)

• 2 - tape saturation (such as vtm...1st or last?)

• 3 - corrective eq

• 4 - multiband compression

• 5 - single band compression (does this go after or before mb??)

• 6 - post eq

• 7 - distortion (such as decapitator or saturn...where should this be??)

• 8 - reverbs and delays sent through a send

I know how not all of these plug-ins are always needed, but is this the typical arrangement / workflow you should do for mixing in most cases? My main concern is where does the distortion go? I'm new to distortion, and am not sure where to put it in the chain. I tried finding out where online but it's hard to find direct answers to a specific chain.

For mastering my current chain is:

• 0 - the mixed track followed by -

• 1 - console emulation (such as vcc)

• 2 - tape saturation (such as vtm)

• 3 - corrective eq

• 4 - multiband compression

• 5 - single band compression

• 6 - post eq

• 7 - distortion (such as decapitator or saturn - where does this go??)

• 8 - stereo widener

• 9 - limiter

Once again, where should distortion go in the chain!?

Thanks you

Learning Guitar?

I'll tell you the story.

I am not an incredible guitar player by any stretch of the imagination. I own electric and acoustic guitars, and I've taught myself well enough to play a cohesive blues sounding "solo" from string to string-although not very fast-and I tune my guitar to drop-d and play the first 3 strings for chords, rudimentary, I know.

Regardless, I love to play the guitar, and I teach myself new things every day.

Here's the bad part.

We just moved into a duplex, and the walls are paper thin, to the point where you can almost hear conversations in the next house, so I can't have my amp here. We have it in a garage on a piece of property my uncle owns, and I can play it any time there, however, I don't want to stop playing, considering that music is my life.

So, I was wondering if anyone knows the best way to learn chords for acoustic guitars. (I'd like to learn scales too, but only in drop-d, because most of my favorite songs are tuned for that.)

Learning Guitar?

Do you find that API EQ broad strokes too limiting?

It seems with the API EQ boost jumping from 0 to 2db I find myself going to many other EQ's that get me the in between 0 and 2db quite often on drums and guitars. I like fine tuning the EQ and I find the jump from 0 to 2 to 4 db too broad. With they had a variable boost control. Anyone else feel the same way?

Need (vinyl) Turntable Recommendations

I would appreciate thoughts on a good/decent turntable for the studio. Not a CD DJ turntable, but an old fashioned record player!

My wife just informed me that she spent some money at a charity auction and is coming home with some of her 'childhood-in-a-milk-crate' in the form of a stack of albums.

I haven't used a turntable since the early 90's when the radio station I worked at switched over to CD's!

With that in mind, I am hoping to find a turntable for 33/78/45 that is also cueable in the old radio fashion: You set the needle on the record and spin it in reverse about 3/4 turn so it is up to speed when the first note hits.

If I can't easily locate one of those, I'd be interested in anything decent. With the hope that I can plug it into my pro board in the studio as well. I'll probably burn her albums to digital, but this is a great excuse to add something interesting to the studio too.

Thanks a ton for any help or advice!!

Measurement software that does noise bursts and measurement averaging?

Hey guys!

I am trying to find a piece of software that can do click or noise bursts for stimuli rather than a sine sweep... and if it can determine the average of multiple measurements that would be a bonus too!

Prog Rock/Metal mixing tips

Hey guys, I've been given a 12 track album to mix and it strays from the typical work I do, so I thought I'd seek some advice/tips!

Prog Rock/Metal. It's a 3 piece with vocals: drums/bass/guitar/vox.

The band haven't really given me any reference material to work from or much of an idea at all regarding what they're looking for. I think they're just excited to have gotten to this stage.

They kind of remind of a blend between Black Sabbath and Tool/A Perfect Circle. Some of the ambience of more modern prog rock, with the more progressive/riff structure of classic rock.

Any definite dos and don'ts?

Any other tips in general? Feel free to blabber on as much as you like haha kfhkh

What sounds good?

I know "what sounds good" is subjective - in many cases, but, I was thinking today - there must be some rules as to what actually sounds good - for voices of different types, kick drums, basses, etc...

Over the 70+ years we've been recording and consuming popular music, what sorts of things are "golden rules"? Are there any? Like, "a male tenor's sibilance frequencies will be around xxxKHz" or "that Felix Unger honk is right around 300Hz". You know?

Is there a good resource "specific" resource to use to learn more about what we've learned since the 40's?

Learning if from doing in this vocation - I get that - but, I was wondering what are some great ways to learn more?

dance music vinyl distribution

I'm interested in the current state of distribution options for a new vinyl label.

I'm especially interested in experiences of dealing with stores directly.

There was a thread 3 years ago that recommended against dealing with stores directly but we've seen a sime growth in vinyl since then so maybe there are some new options.

Before anyone says don't do it - I'm a purist and not really doing it to build a business but for love. Not losing *all* my money would be nice.

Buying audio interface, please advise

The last audio interface I bought was an E-MU 0404 in 2009. At the time, it seemed like a good audio interface for the price (~$200), and it served me well for what I was doing. I compose/produce in Ableton Live, and it did fine DA conversion to my monitors and very occasionally recorded vocals/instruments.

More recently, I've moved toward a less DAW-based approach, using hardware synths / drum machines and guitar more often, which has pushed me back toward recording analog outputs directly into Live. This has brought a few problems with my interface to the forefront: 1.) latency 2.) signal-to-noise ratio in the recording and 3.) number of inputs. Also, I'm not entirely sure, but the interface seems to be malfunctioning and applying a hard limiter when I'm recording such that increasing the input gain beyond a certain amount makes the input louder but the overall recording gets limited to an amplitude that is significantly quieter than the recording limits inside of the DAW. So I want to purchase a new interface that addresses these problems.

Budget: $250-$1000

Inputs: 4 minimum, but more would be nice

Current set-up: I use a desktop PC running 64-bit Windows 7, and as I said, I tend to use Ableton Live for composition/recording/mixing. The desktop is powerful and has available PCIE slots, but using a PCIE audio interface is something I know very little about at this time.

I did some looking around and found some interfaces that have more inputs, like the FocusRite Scarlett 6i6 or the Tascam US-4x4. But I don't want to buy another ~$200-300 interface that will end up being dissatisfying for the same reasons my E-MU 0404 is, like latency/SNR and poor lasting power.

After reading on this forum, I've learned about some new companies that I wasn't familiar with before (RME, MOTU). I took a look at the RME Babyface, but it seems to have only 2 inputs unless you have an ADAT set-up which seems like it would be more money. But I like the idea of having really solid drivers, low latency, high SNR recordings, and I'm open to the idea of a PCIE interface as long as it's reasonably priced.

What would you recommend?

This Bass Guitar Sound? How?

I often hear a certain style of bass guitar in post-punk and goth music. It's a kind of twangy, almost modulated, stringy bright sound. I am thinking that the style is created by certain effects they are adding (versus a particular kind of bass guitar). I'm not well-versed in guitars so I need a little help figuring out what is creating that sound!

I don't own a bass, but I have some good Kontakt bass sample libraries (all of the Native Instruments libraries and Vir2 BASIS Library).

I stung together a few short clips of this particular sound (by various artists). They are all a little different but I think you'll see the similar style I am talking about. I labeled them with the Speak and Spell (letters A-H) so a clip is easy to reference.

Sludgy drum melodic modular techno stuff

Any feedback on the mix would be most appreciated.

Mutant bass and white noise through plague bearer do the sludgy drums. Lots of other stuff, most of which is cyclebox, sometimes though an erica polivoks. Multitracked and very edited in Ableton.

Reason 8 - Preview instruments ?

Hello,

in my previous Reason versions, I could listen to a preview of the instruments before deciding to load it into my session.

I used to do it form "Create instrument". On the pop up window, I could click on any Refill and play with it to listen to it.

Now after "Create instrument" it opens the browser. When I click on any Refill, it shows the infos on the bottom of it but doesn't output any sound, so I am forced to load the instrument of that Refill to browse and listen to it.

Is there a way to have a pre-listen?

Is there any reason for me not to buy PT 10?

Hi,

I stopped using PT 5 years ago, but now I need to have it installed at home for next 6 months to do some projects.

Is there any reason for me not to buy PT 10 (actually it's PT 9 + free upgrade to PT 10)? I'm on Mac Mini, late 2012.

Price is fine as well, approx. 150 USD, I just came back to finish some audio engineering school, so that's a student license...With iLok, box etc.

Any reason?

I need to make decision today. Thx.

External preamp - should I plug it into Babyface or Octopre?

Hi!

Maybe this question gets asked (and answered) alot around here, but I have had along absence from GS so here goes:

I am currently using an external preamp (Warm Audio WA12) going into my RME Babyface. As I understand it, the preamp inputs on theBabyface can act as line inputs once you set the input gain at zero. What I've had a hard time finding out is if this setup in any way degrades the signal. From what I've read I understand that the preamps are not entirely bypassed.

As there are line inputs on the Octopre (which I connect by ADAT to the Babyface) I am wondering if the signal would be better of going through the Octopre instead? I am suspecting that the converters in the Octopre might not be as good as in the Babyface, but the Octopre has the advantage of having "real" line inputs.

In short, which one should I plug my preamp into?

Thanks!

What Do You Use To Add Harmonics?

Hi guys.

I use :

- distortion

- saturation

I know bitcrushers can also do this but i think it sounds awful. That is why i dont use it. although i can imagine that in some cases you can have benefits of it adding harminics. This helps to cut through the mix u know...

My question is what methods do you guys use often to add harmonics to you mix?

i'm talking about effects AND production techniques. (like if you use a second oscilator to add the harmonics)

Cheers!

In Ear monitoring setup for whole band

Hi all.

I need to work out a way to create an in ear track for s six piece. We will be playing to a few backing tracks of keyboards and really all need to hear at least a click and some cues. I have a 300 IEM Series and custom mold IEMs but the other band members don't.

When rehearsing we've just used headphone lines coming out of the outs of the audio interface, but this will be with the mixer quite far from the stage I think so not an option.

Any thoughts on the best way to get the click and cues to the rest of the band?

Emu esi 2000

Hello guys.

Do you have any experience with the emu esi 2000 ? Is it nice? Something special about it or any specific things it does, that is just awesome?

Can you use if fx a an external effect processor, to an out-coming signal. FX running a synth through the machine to use its reverb or delay on the synths sound. Or is it only possible to use the effects to process the samples that are loaded in to the machine ?

Thanks in advance & have a geeky sunday!

Yet another "What Mic do I need" thread.

Hey everyone, I'm sorry to start yet another "what microphone should I buy" thread, but I figured that when I make this post, I'd tailor it to MY personal needs.

I've been a metal vocalist for about 8 years now, and have only just started researching how to record my own vocals(I've been recording in studios and such), and need to know what the best brand and type of microphone to get within my price range.

For those familiar with the different sub-genres of metal and the bands, my vocals are comparable to Sirens and Sailors, Parkway Drive, Suicide Silence, to more "softer" bands such as A Day To Remember, A Skylit Drive, Bless the Fall, Escape the Fate, and The Amity Affliction(sorry for the long list. Wanted to make sure I listed someone decently known.) The mic also has to be able to clearly record metal vocals, as well as clean vocals.

Now, down to the gritty. My price range is not very high, and there's no hope of me saving my pennies. Come the 1st of May, I'll be getting a small chunk of change(Somewhere around a grand), and will only be able to toss out no more than $150 on a mic. I'd need something that's USB or an XLR/1/4" interface and microphone that is still within my price range.

Used would be better, but new would be okay. Any ideas are welcome.

Thanks in advance!

Drum Pad Hits Layout

Hello,

I'm mapping drum pad samples to a 16 pad sampler, such as this link:

http://ift.tt/1EPqAgv

But I will have one hit for each most likely instead of two.

Ergonomically, it makes sense. But then I realized that some sounds occupy the same time in electronic music such as snare/clap, cymbal/crash... And some of them cannot sound together while they occupy the same space, such as Open HH and Closed HH... But instead for the ones that are not in the picture, non-drum/other percussive elements, such as Claves, Shakers, etc... In order to create the best layout, I need to know how these other ones group up in time/space. Something tells me that similar groupings has to do with a separation of an instrument's frequency range but not always applicable (such as snare/clap). Also it seems preferable to have certain FX spread-out in different pads I think, seems certain effects are used at different times. Only someone with experience can answer...

Why I am doing this?

Because It makes sense ergonomically and also because I want to start with the best workflow so I don't have to take the time to re-learn something later-on the right way when I find out my finger tapping isn't layed-out properly enough. (efficiency). I could also use this to categorize my sampler's database based on pad location... And that would be have amazing consequences in sample-loading workflow.

I realize this long list is probably more than just one group of 16 pads, but that's fine. I intend to make this a long post with everyone's thoughts on group-hits to benefit everyone. Because I'm sure everyone thought about this at some point in time but no-one had the patience to analyse it, contribute to help facilitate the thought process please... Here is what I have so far:

- Snare/Clap

clipping sound in edited audio files

I've been using ableton recently and I've been editing the audio files in audacity and cool edit but every time I edit a file the edited file has a kind of clipping noise on it.

I'm not sure if the audio is actually clipping or if it's just a noise that seems to appear every time I play the file.

I don't know if it will be audible when I record a mix down.

Does anyone know what this problem is or how to fix it?

Thanks.

HELP ME PLEASE! Focusrite 18i20

I'm Windows 8.1 64 bit running Studio One Pro also 64 bit... Was running a Presonus 1818VSL with a Digmax FS via ADAT...

So, the 1818VSL blew up Friday night.... This is the third one of these in less than 4 months... Absolute crap. Anyway, I have work lined up and have to buy an interface fast... Go to Guitar Center and pick up the 18i20... Install is fine.... The Mix Control thing may have me eating my gun, but I imagine I'll get the hang up of it someday...

Here's my first question... When I open up a Studio One session recorded on the 1818VSL and try to play it back -- now through the 18i20 -- the sound is messed up big time... It's like the track is there but under a bunch of digital mess like it can't quite translate the codec or something.... I can create a new session and copy/paste the old tracks into the new session and everything plays back perfectly... What the heck do you think is going on?

Second question... I have a hybrid setup with tons of outboard gear. In Studio One, you can use a Presonus plug in called Pipeline... It essentially lets you route the audio track out of whatever channel on your interface into, say, an outboard compressor, and back in again... It probably is my complete idiocy when it comes to the Mix Control, but I cannot get this working...

Can you operate the 18i20 without Mix Control and let the DAW -- in my case Studio One -- dictate routing, etc.?

Also, in Mix Control the DAW channels correspond to the number of the channel in the DAW absolutely, yes? So, if I have a Track 1 and Track 2 in Studio One, Mix Control will handle them as DAW 1 and 2?

Thanks in advance for any help/direction...

Nonprofit studio setup

I am staring a nonprofit recording studio for troubled youth. The goal is to curtail criminal behavior by allowing kids to record and teaching them how to record. I myself am not much of an engineer.

I am coming up with a budget based upon the equipment needed. I have no clue what I need though. My experience is in hip hop, but I want to be able to record live instruments as well as electronic.

Appearance is very important because I want the kids to feel that they are getting something better than recording at home. That's important because this is an incentive based initiative. They need to want to be in our studio so they will not want to commit crime. Over time though, I want to teach them how to do things on their own. Therefore it is important to have some sort of 24-32 channel mixing board, if not just for show, but hopefully it will be functional in the setup as well.

I pretty much need an entire studio, but don't want to have to sell the farm to get it. Though I want to impress the kids, they are still kids, do things néed to be durable and preferably not overly expensive.

Thanks for your help.

Is Jay Turser one of the top luthiers working today?

Frankly it is strange to see so many people put down Jay's work. IMO he is one of the top luthiers working today. There is a reason there is a 9 month wait list to get one of his guitars. His craftsmanship is unmatched and he has always been very responsive whenever I have shot him an email with a question on any topic.

For those that have scared off by the astronomical prices that JT's guitars have risen to lately, let me reassure you that his builds are worth every penny. There is a reason this guy has been around for so long.

Anyway, just wanted to put my 2c in.
