500 Series Console using Speck Xtra-mix

In my question to create an awesome little portable 500 series console (while I wait on Jeff Steiger's modular creation) I've acquired some 500 series gear, and a Speck Xtramix CXi v5 (balanced version). The plan is to use the Xtramix as a back-end, mainly for tracking and mixdown to/from tape and DAW, and use the 500 series pres and EQ for xformer i/o color and that big console sound.

Anyway, I'm curious how the Xtramix stacks up to other modular console "back end" options like the API DSM/8200(a), SSL X-Desk, etc. Or has anbody used it side-by-side fancy consoles or high-end summing units and compared it's mixing qualities in terms of TONE (obviously features will vary). I know the Xtramix is meant to be very clean, but I'm hoping that will work to my advantage to let the sound of the pres and EQ's shine and tastefully color the mix, like a proper console. Thanks fellas! kfhkh
