Can't get along with overheads

hey, I've been experimeting (some struggling) with drums miking, and it's actually cool what I can do, except that overheads doesn't fit my mix.

I have a great sounding drumkit, but an average sounding space, so I like to play with equalization to improve my recording, and sometimes even make my drums sound artificial, or even electronic, so I use many plugins to achieve the sounds I'm looking for. I'm heavily influenced by Gordon Raphael and The Strokes recordings (as in songs like "Hard to Explain" and "The Way it Is")

so the deal is, when I'm mixing, I can use a gate just fine to isolate separate drums' close mics and play with them, but when I add the overheads to the mix, it washes away everything I just did. of course I can lower their volume, but doing so I won't get cymbals near as loud as I want.

how should I deal with this?
