Guitar leads, which ones ?

Hi all, silly question, don't beleive I'm asking this, also I'm not a guitarist, but I need to get some leads for a friend who is. Can I use a bog standard jack to jack lead ? of which I have loads, or have I got to buy a "guitar lead" am I right is saying that the cable has to have a certain capacitance to be used with guitars ? or is that a fallacy ?
