Say given very close (average/slow) SPL readings would the distorted system damage your ears more than the clean one...I remember reading an article once that supported that theory...I think it had to do with a "clipping" PA causing more violent peaks; and there being more noise in general, particularly in the more sensitive areas (i.e. a la Fletcher–Munson curves)...
