I remember reading through a thread here about the quad core nMP vs the 4GHz i7, and for the life of me I cannot find the one comment that I am wanting to reread. Essentially someone was saying that even though the overall benchmark numbers were lower on nMP quad core, it still performed better, and had more power while running Pro Tools 11.
I want to find a little more info on this. The 6 core nMP is slightly out of my price range, considering I have to buy a new monitor (I'm on a 2011 27" iMac right now and don't want to downgrade monitor quality) and thats going to be at least an additional 500 dollars.
Also, the 6 core is probably more power than I need, but maybe not. I'm on an i5 2.7GHz and I can really load it up before getting CPU errors. I mostly do songwriting and pre production, so I'm using a lot of VIs. Right now I feel like my work flow is being interrupted by needing to bounce before I'm committed to an idea. 30 minutes later the song will go a different direction, I'll have to reactive the instrument track, make my changes, re bounce, inactivate the old track... maybe I'm being picky, but I want a smoother work flow.
Considering the benchmarks for the new 5k 4GHz iMac are twice that of my current iMac, I figured that would be the best bang for the buck. But now I'm reading about heat issues, sometimes noisy fans, and the worry of buying a first gen product of such new technology. I can't afford to rebuy in 3 years. I want this to last at least 5.
There is a great website refurbme.com that lists all available Apple refurbs. I can pick up a quad core nMP for about $2800 and then upgrade the ram on my own. Add a $700 monitor to that and I'm about at $3500. The iMac can be found for about $2700 with a 512GB SSD, and then also upgrade the ram on my own. If the heat/fan noise/stability of the computer wasn't in question, I think it would be an obvious choice.
So I'm curious if anyone has been in this situation, or is using the iMac and having any issues.
