Unlooping the Mellotron samples

I went into the EXS24 editor to make the new Mellotron library more authentic: removed the loops, took off the filters and disabled velocity response. I saved that patch as "True Mellotron" and then saved the channel as a new channel preset.

Then I noticed a problem - altering the preset on the EXS24 seems to have disabled the Blend control in the Smart Controls. That control is mapped to a Scripted Instruments plugin that seems to be an uneditable black box. Where did I mess up? Has anybody altered that library successfully?

Thanks for any feedback

Sennheiser MD421 ii - Fixed My Rattle Sounds

I was searching everywhere online and couldn't find a walk through or a fix for my problem.

I was having a slight rattle in my signals, especially lower frequencies in the drum department.

I only found two things that could have been the culprit to my rattling 421:

- The White Skirt in the diaphragm area was slightly bent up from someone else trying to get into it before I owned it. (I purchased 2 421's for 300 :))

- The HOT wire had a only a partial connection ( only 2 wires were connected the others were slightly off the Solder job.

After fixing these 'maybe' problematic issues, my problem was resolved!

Thought I'd share the news if any others have the same problem.

By the way, here is how you open a Sennheiser MD421

Power to the racks!

Hi,

I have I simple question (but then again nothing is really simple is it? abduction ). I'm planning to build my first rack one of these days.

And my question is do you need (or is it recommended to have) a power conditioner for a rack that just sits in the studio/house or is such a thing only required at live venues where the power supply can be a bit unstable?

I have a chance to score one pretty cheap of the used market (35 euros)

GEMINI PL100 seems to be a decent enough unit

Thanks kfhkh

Question for the pros

Fortunately I have moved on from Reason, but every now and then I'll master a track for my friends, and the mix has this quality that we have come to describe as the 'Reason Glaze'. Perhaps it's a combination of their type dithering and/or low bit depth. In so many words it just has bad transients. Glazed over and dull.

Have you dealt with this and what are some solutions?

Question for the pros

Signal from DAW back into tape

Hey guys! Apologies if this has been asked before, but I haven't had any luck searching here or Google with this specific question.

I'm using Logic with a Focusrite LS56, alongside my beloved Tascam 388. Usually my workflow is: record to tape, dump to digital, mix happily.

Occasionally, it seems like it might sound really nice to take some digital source material (let's say, maybe a synth pad or a mellotron soft-synth) and output it from the DAW, then record it into a channel on my Tascam 388 (for added warmth, or just because I love those preamps)!

This is obviously really easy if I go line-level from the DAW into a line input on the tape machine, but that doesn't seem impart any of the "magic" that you get from the preamp->eq (like when recording from a microphone). I'm guessing it has something to do with the character of the preamp in that circuit, which is totally bypassed since the signal from the DAW is already hot.

So anyway, my question: is there some combo of reamp box, DI box, etc. that might allow me to knock the signal level of a digital sound down so that I can plug it into the XLR input on the Tascam, thus getting all the nice qualities of those channels? Is this a bad idea? Has this been answered a thousand times? Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Signal from DAW back into tape

So, I got a private message from hell..

..regarding my 1st track.

There is local group in my area here in Finland where I live. I posted my first track and then things got really bad.

There is a DJ/producer, who is well known in my area. He's been doing this over a decade and I like many of he's tracks. Those tracks get about 3000-5000 listeners and they are in my opinion very good in old school way.

There's some bit's of he's 2 page "information" about my track Club Is Less.

"..this is what is wrong in todays house. It's all there in your 9 minute puppy poop.

I wouldn't call it a house, not sure it's music either.."

"You wouldn't know what Mackie mixer is even I would hit you with one.."

(I do know what it is and the importance to early sound. My uncle has couple of those..). He also mentioned that something is wrong with my fills during the track and in a educational sense he should hit me with that Mackie in the nice groove so there would be a change that I might learn something.."

"..regarding your main part, it's my honour to tell you that the imitation of funky feeling is sad. Plain and simple."

"Club ain't less kid, in your case it's nothing.."

I'm so hurt. I could't move in a hour or so. It felt like somebody hit me to the chest.

Somebody gave me advice here earlier to join band. I did that and it was good advice. Somebody said that make a track to a specific genre. So I listened lots of good vibey house. I break some of those in my daw. I wanted to make a track that I would like to dance myself. It's pretty long, almost 9 minutes, but thats how I felt it as I was arranging it.

There(GS)is also lot's of discussion about the saturation of electronic music. I'm humble about my music. I want to have fun and learn. I don't need to be next whatever or anything like that.

My track is what it is, but I felt so much good things just making it. Now it's all gone.

PA for a vocal ensemble

Hello!

Could you please recommend an inexpensive PA set (bare minimums) for a vocal ensemble of 12-13 in total, including 1 percussionist and 1 keyboard, for live performances at venues up to 200 capacity?

Additionally, is it unrealistic to consider getting a simple PA system to double-serve for making at least semi-decent recordings of our gigs, as well?

Thanks very much in advance!
