Signal from DAW back into tape

Hey guys! Apologies if this has been asked before, but I haven't had any luck searching here or Google with this specific question.

I'm using Logic with a Focusrite LS56, alongside my beloved Tascam 388. Usually my workflow is: record to tape, dump to digital, mix happily.

Occasionally, it seems like it might sound really nice to take some digital source material (let's say, maybe a synth pad or a mellotron soft-synth) and output it from the DAW, then record it into a channel on my Tascam 388 (for added warmth, or just because I love those preamps)!

This is obviously really easy if I go line-level from the DAW into a line input on the tape machine, but that doesn't seem impart any of the "magic" that you get from the preamp->eq (like when recording from a microphone). I'm guessing it has something to do with the character of the preamp in that circuit, which is totally bypassed since the signal from the DAW is already hot.

So anyway, my question: is there some combo of reamp box, DI box, etc. that might allow me to knock the signal level of a digital sound down so that I can plug it into the XLR input on the Tascam, thus getting all the nice qualities of those channels? Is this a bad idea? Has this been answered a thousand times? Sorry if this is a dumb question.
