Machida is the last contender of the old guard. When he leaves, the UFC loses it's last personality.

I know you MMA purists put the sport above fighters and laugh at those who don't, but I'll be honest and admit that I miss the personalities that initially drew me to MMA. The names which still catch my eye today on forums and news links are really staples from the mid/late-2000s who are still around. And the last of them who is still in contention is Lyoto Machida. He is a freaking Karate master who does MMA - his stance, personality, and charisma make him stand out from the rest. He is the only fighter left for whom I truly feel nervous watching and get excited to watch. And the truth is that between 2004-2010 when the UFC was doing well, you kinda looked at the fighters in the WWE light - they were even promoted as such.



I think today's top fighters are easily better than Chuck or Tito or Rua were in their prime, but they all have a generic MMA style and exhibit a similar pesonality.



Again, I know your MMA purists look down on fighter-adoration, but characters do put butts in the seats. It's always been like this for individual sports, be it MMA or even tennis. I just wish there were more Andre Agassis whereas the UFC is interested in more Pete Samprases.
