UFC 1 memorabilia.. UFC original rules list **PIC**

Take a walk down memory lane and check out a cool piece piece of UFC 1 memorabilia from UFC co-creator Campbell McLaren.

The fight executive, who’s currently CEO of the upstart Combate Americas organization, today tweeted a picture showing the first page of the UFC’s original rules set (and yes, there were a few of them despite the original organizers billing the event as “no rules!”).

MMA fans will probably notice some major differences from today’s rules set, including the lack of uniform guidelines for gloves and attire, as well as the lack of a scoring system. But sharp MMA fans can also probably point out a significant amount of gray area that was addressed in later years, most prominently with the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts that were adopted by state athletic commissions beginning in April 2000.

However, even with that first UFC event, which took place on Nov. 12, 1993, in Denver, there were calls for additional rules. As McLaren noted, even a UFC 1 competitor campaigned for some common-sense guidelines.

It was clear from the very first UFC 1 fight that the sport would need some tinkering – as well as better and quicker decision-makers. When karate specialist Gerard Gordeau tagged sumo wrestler Teila Tuli with a kick to the face, sending the Hawaiian fighter’s tooth flying out of the cage, in UFC 1′s curtain-jerker, the ref’s deer-in-headlights look quickly proved the need for officials who could quickly react and adapt to an ever-evolving sport.

Today’s rule set may not be perfect (can we get rid of that downed-opponent rule?), but hey, at least everyone’s wearing gloves these days.
