Gus explains tattoo

If you’ve seen Alexander Gustafsson fight, you’ve probably noticed a series of inverted triangle tattoos on his right arm.

At long last, “The Mauler” has offered up an explanation for what the stacks of shapes mean – most filled in, but one empty and one halfway filled.

Gustafsson has one triangle for each of his pro fights. The ones that are filled in represent victories. So reading across, top to bottom and left to right, he had nine straight colored-in triangles until his loss to Phil Davis at UFC 112 more than four years ago. Then he filled in six more after that.

But wait … what about his title fight loss to Jon Jones this past September? Shouldn’t that be an empty triangle, too?

Gustafsson offered up an explanation on his Facebook page after adding to the pattern with updated inking for his loss to Jones and his win over Jimi Manuwa in March, which set up a rematch with the light heavyweight champ.

“The Jon ‘Bones’ Jones fight and the Jimi Manuwa are filled in,” Gustafsson wrote. “In my eyes, I won the fight (against) Jon Jones, but not in the judges’ eyes, so I filled it just half colored. The next tattoo I will do will be filled in fully when I get the belt, this time I will not leave it in the hand of the judges.”

So there ya have it – Gustafsson is steadfast enough in his belief that he beat Jones at UFC 165 that he’s willing to give his tattoo design an asterisk of sorts.

The lanky Swede is set to rematch Jones later this fall at UFC 178. And as he said, he hopes this time he won’t have to do a half-fill or leave one empty.
