GJJ: Google Takes Up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Fightland Blog

By Sarah Kurchak

The Googleplex, Google’s corporate headquarters located in Mountain View California, is becoming a bit of a Thunderdome. A well organized and friendly Thunderdome filled with tech geniuses, free healthy meals for its staff, and ping pong, but a Thunderdome nonetheless.

Earlier this month, Google added Brazilian jiu jitsu lessons to its extensive list of on-site extracurricular offerings for its staff, and the denizens of the Googleplex have really taken to the martial art. They’re getting fit, blowing off steam, and challenging their genius tech nerd brains in new and effective ways. They’re also getting just a tiny bit competitive, and might even be eyeing a rumble or two with their fellow Silicon Valley giants.

Google’s BJJ classes are taught by Milton Bastos, a World (2010), Pan Ams (2009, 2012) and World No Gi (2009, 2012, 2013) champ from San Jose by way of Sao Paolo, Brazil. The black belt, who trains and teaches at the Institute of Martial Arts in California, got the gig thanks to a post on a social media network (that was not Google+).

“Someone posted on Facebook, [asking] if someone had time available for a class,” Bastos tells me in a phone call during a rare break his schedule. “I was available and I said ‘Oh! I can do it!' And they invited me,” he says in the kind of accent that anyone who’s ever trained with a Brazilian instructor knows and loves.

The fact that Google was looking for a BJJ instructor didn’t really surprise Bastos. In his experience, there’s a fairly large crossover between Silicon Valley tech workers and martial arts enthusiasts. “It is common. Especially here in Northern California, everybody’s from a tech company. Most of the people, they work in some tech place like Apple, Google, Facebook, YouTube.”

Image

And they’re not just dabblers in the art, either. Google, for example, boasts a number of BJJ practitioners at all skill levels. “They have black belts, brown belts, purple belts, all ranks over there. And beginners, too.”

A mix of all of the above showed up for Bastos’s first class at Google on July 7. It went so well that his classes hit maximum capacity two days later.

Bastos has been enjoying his experience so far, for a number of reasons.

“It’s really cool. It’s a different vibe. They go there just to relax and to take their mind off a little bit from their engineer stuff. And it’s really cool hanging outside the Google.”

Although his students have shown interest in both self-defense techniques and BJJ in general, he thinks that the opportunity to relieve some stress is probably the biggest draw for Google employees. The fact that it might be helping their productivity doesn’t hurt, either.

“I think [their motivation] is more like relax a little bit, de-stress, get in shape. Especially because a lot of people work there for many hours. So sometimes, they have no solution for some problem, they go there, train, they relax, and then they go back to work and find a solution.”

script

I ask him if there’s anything unique about the way that programmers and engineers approach the intricacies of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu moves and strategy, but he doesn’t think it’s fair to generalize like that. Everyone puts their own unique spin on BJJ.

“Each guy is so different. It’s really hard to make a pattern there. It’s an individual thing.”

I also ask him about the high percentage of women who have been taking his Google classes. According to one comment from a female student on his Facebook page, about 25% of the people in his classes are women, which is no small feat given that both BJJ and Silicon Valley are still largely male-dominated communities.

“The cool thing is that it was really organic. There’s a girl in the class, and she always likes to bring more girls to the class,” he says. “My classes always have a lot of girls, even outside Google. I’m used to teaching girls because I’m still kind of old school, too. When I started training, it was a lot of old school jiu jitsu, so it was a lot of self-defense. Self-defense is the main thing in jiu jitsu. It’s how you start everything. So I try to show a lot of self-defense to the girls before I start jiu jitsu. And then when I see they start to like [the ground fighting] more, they can go to jiu jitsu [class]. If they want to stick with self-defense, they can stick with self-defense.”

He says there’s a good mix of people who are more into the self-defense and people who are interesting in pursuing BJJ beyond the basics now. And apparently the students in the latter group are starting to embrace the idea of a little friendly competition.

When I ask if there might be in-house tournaments in the Googeplex in the future, he suggests something even more intriguing.

“Actually, there is a plan to do something like that. They say Facebook has a team, too, and the guys who train there, they’ve competed before. So they’re probably going to want us to do something like that. Maybe like a Google against Facebook.”

Matt Hughes vs. Renzo Gracie set for ADCC 2015 *POLL*

Image

Former UFC champion Matt Hughes and Renzo Gracie will compete once again - this time it is in a grappling match at ADCC 2015.

After meeting in the UFC octagon several years ago, Matt Hughes and Renzo Gracie will collide once again in a grappling contest at the Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) Submission Wrestling World Championships next year.

"It's a done deal," Gracie told MMAFighting.com. "Matt asked to compete again at the ADCC and they offered me this wonderful fight. I wasn't expecting for this, but I immediately accepted it."

Hughes and Gracie competed at UFC 112 - coincidentally also in Abu Dhabi - back in 2010, and will now cross paths again half a decade later in September 2015 for their scheduled grappling contest.

The former welterweight champion holds a 2-2 record at the prestigious event, as he beat Ricardo Almeida and Jeremy Horn before losing to Jeff Monson and Tito Ortiz.

"Let's do this again," Gracie said. "Every time I have a chance to compete, I'm in. I can't say now. He fought there before, he's really tough. It's going to be a great fight."

The American fighter also revealed that he will be training with Brazilian jiu-jitsu blackbelt Liborio, the head coach of American Top Team, ahead of the match.

Glover Teixeira-Phil Davis verbally agree for fall fight *POLL*

Image

After having his lengthy winning streak snapped at the hands of the world’s top pound-for-pound fighter, Glover Teixeira appears to have a stiff test on his hands to get back on track.

According to a report from Brazil’s Combate news site, Teixeira (22-3 MMA, 5-1 UFC) has verbally agreed to fight Phil Davis (12-2 MMA, 8-2 UFC) this fall, potentially at UFC 179 in Rio de Janeiro. Combate cited sources close to the UFC, but the promotion has not yet announced the fight.

The UFC 179 pay-per-view is set for Oct. 25 at Maracanazinho Gymnasium in Rio. The event currently has just one bout set – a featherweight title headliner between champ Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes, a rematch from their UFC 142 fight, which also took place in Rio.

The matchup could be an intriguing one, given many thought Davis should have been ahead of Teixeira in the pecking order for a shot at Jon Jones’ light heavyweight title this past spring. But it was the Brazilian who got the shot at UFC 172, with Davis in the co-feature position against Anthony Johnson.

Teixeira in April challenged Jones for the belt, and while he became just the fifth opponent to ever take Jones the distance, it was little solace as he was dominated in the fight, losing with a trio of 50-45 scores.

That loss snapped a 20-fight winning streak for U.S.-trained Brazilian, including a perfect 5-0 start to his UFC career that included stoppages of Kyle Kingsbury, Fabio Maldonado, James Te Huna and Ryan Bader, and a dominant decision win over Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.

Davis is no stranger to Brazil. Twice in his past four fights, the American has gone into enemy territory and done what statistically has been a tall order in the UFC by beating a Brazilian in his home country. At UFC 153, he choked out Wagner Prado in Rio. And at UFC 163 a year ago this weekend, he took a unanimous decision from former light heavyweight champion and recent middleweight title challenger Lyoto Machida, stunning the Rio crowd.

The win over Machida gave him three straight. But in a fight against Johnson that could have inched him closer to a title shot, where he was in 2012 when he lost to Rashad Evans in an elimination fight, Davis was dominated by “Rumble” and was swept on the scorecards at UFC 172.

Wins for each fighter are crucial, as a two-fight skid in the increasingly loaded 205-pound division could mean a long climb back to contention.

Donald Cerrone: Khabib Nurmagomedov has withdrawn from three fights against me

Image

Donald Cerrone (24-6 MMA, 11-3 UFC) says he really wants to fight fellow lightweight contender Khabib Nurmagomedov (22-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC), but at this point, he’s not sure it’s meant to be.

According to “Cowboy,” he has signed a bout agreement to face the undefeated Dagestani on three separate occasions. The most recent of those targeted dates was September’s UFC 178 event in Las Vegas.

Even though Cerrone has apparently put pen to paper three times, he’s yet to step in the octagon against Nurmagomedov. He won’t take any of the blame for that, though, because he says it was “The Eagle” who withdrew from each scheduled contest.

“This is the third time him and I have signed to fight and the third time that he’s pulled out,” Cerrone told MMAjunkie. “I’m kind of bummed. I was really looking forward to that fight. But hey, what are you going to do?”

By no means is Cerrone implying Nurmagomedov doesn’t want to compete against him. He just thinks between timing, outside commitments, and injuries, the right circumstances haven’t come together for them to fight.

UFC 178 was the closest the matchup has ever come to reaching fruition. Both sides had inked a bout agreement, but, as UFC President Dana White tells it, Nurmagomedov suffered a fight-canceling knee injury in training just 20 minutes later.

“It’s bad luck,” Cerrone said. “(We were supposed to fight) earlier in the year. One was called off because of Ramadan or whatever he has to do for his religion. He didn’t want to take the fight because it would put him during that period. The time before that I don’t really remember the logistics of it. Now he’s injured.”

If Cerrone vs. Nurmagomedov did happen at UFC 178, the winner would have been right on the cusp of a title shot at 155 pounds. The opportunity to compete in such a high-profile bout might provide motivation to wait out Nurmagomedov’s injury, but the always-active Cerrone is eager to keep the ball rolling and reach his goal of six fights in 2014.

The 31-year-old has already registered three victories this year, all by stoppage, with the most recent coming against Jim Miller at UFC Fight Night 45 earlier this month. His four-fight winning streak overall under the UFC banner is tied for the third longest in the division, but Cerrone is not content with his accomplishments thus far.

Cerrone’s no-nonsense attitude has made him a beloved character to UFC fans. He’s made it very clear before, after and between every fight that he will step in the octagon against any opponent, any time at any weight.

While he is hopeful for another bout of significance in lieu of Nurmagomedov, Cerrone says he is extending an open challenge to anyone and everyone. All you have to do it call the UFC and say his name.

“I’m willing to fight anyone,” Cerrone said. “It’s super easy. Call Dana. I’m ready. All you’ve got to do is call the boss and tell him you want to fight.”

Kevin Casey and Robert Drysdale flunk post-fight tests

Kevin Casey and Robert Drysdale flunk post-fight tests at UFC 175, TUF 19 Finale

Image

UFC middleweight Kevin Casey and light heavyweight Robert Drysdale failed drug tests following UFC 175 and The Ultimate Fighter 19 Finale, MMAjunkie learned today.

The Nevada attorney general’s office today confirmed that Casey (9-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC), who knocked out Bubba Bush in 61 seconds at UFC 175, tested positive for drostanolone, a steroid. Drysdale (7-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC), who submitted Keith Berish at The Ultimate Fighter 19 Finale, was flagged for an elevated testosterone-to-epitestosterone (T/E) ratio of 12-to-1, according to Deputy Attorney General Christopher Eccles.

UFC 175 and The Ultimate Fighter 19 Finale took place on successive days, July 5 and July 6, both at Las Vegas’ Mandalay Bay Events Center, as part of the UFC’s International Fight Week.

It’s the first positive test for Casey, while Drysdale fails a second time after the NSAC declined to medically clear him for a fight at UFC 167 due to an elevated T/E ratio of 19.4-1, which is over three times the allowed ratio of 6-to-1. Following his win over Berish, he denied wrongdoing in the matter and attributed his commission troubles to a “bureaucratic issue.”

Both fighters will receive temporary suspensions pending a formal hearing on the failures. They face formal suspension, fines and the overturning of their respective wins.

There were no additional positive tests arising from UFC 175 or the The Ultimate Fighter 19 Finale, according to the attorney general’s office. Enhanced testing – blood and urine – was utilized for the July 5 event, the office said, while competitors from the July 6 show were tested via urine.

Of course, two scheduled fighters were scratched prior to UFC 175. Chael Sonnen was the subject of enhanced testing and was flagged for five banned substances, which scratched him from a scheduled fight with Vitor Belfort in the co-headliner. He subsequently retired and was this past week suspended for two years, among other punishments. Sonnen’s originally scheduled opponent, Wanderlei Silva, was found to have evaded a random drug test and was scratched from the card. He later admitted to the NSAC that he was taking banned diuretics in order to recover from a wrist injury.

Casey, a veteran of “The Ultimate Fighter 17,” made his professional octagon debut at show’s season finale and lost via second-round TKO to Josh Samman. He was subsequently released by the UFC and went back to the regional circuit, where he won three straight fights before an offer to return.

Drysdale, a decorated jiu-jitsu competitor, improved his unbeaten streak to 7 pro fights. He was scheduled to make his UFC debut this past August at UFC 163, but a reported staph infection forced him to withdraw. He has finished all of his fights via first-round submission.

Urijah Faber fights Masanori Kanehara in Japan *POLL*

Image

A bantamweight matchup between Urijah Faber (31-7 MMA, 7-3 UFC) and promotional newcomer Masenori Kanehara (23-11-5 MMA, 0-0 UFC) has been added to September’s UFC Fight Night 52 event in Japan.

While UFC officials have yet to announce the contest, the matchup was first reported by fightsportasia.com and has since been confirmed by multiple outlets.

Featuring a heavyweight contest between Mark Hunt and Roy Nelson, UFC Fight Night 52 takes place Sept. 20 at Saitama Arena at Saitama, Japan. The event is expected to stream on UFC Fight Pass, but broadcast plans have yet to be officially revealed.

Faber, of course, is a former WEC featherweight champion and has long been one of the biggest superstars in the sport. Currently ranked No. 3 in the latest USA TODAY Sports MMA bantamweight rankings, Faber is currently 5-1 in his past six fights with the lone loss in that span coming in a failed title bid against then-champ Renan Barao.

Meanwhile, Kanehara is a 31-year-old Japanese product who makes his UFC debut. Fighting professionally since 2003, Kanehara opened his career at a very pedestrian 3-3-4 mark but has gone on to build an impressive career mark while competing for Sengoku, Pancrase and DEEP. Seventeen of his 23 career wins have come by way of stoppage.

With the addition to the card, the latest UFC Fight Night 52 card includes:

Mark Hunt vs. Roy Nelson

Rin Nakai vs. Miesha Tate

Takanori Gomi vs. Myles Jury

Urijah Faber vs. Masenori Kanehara

Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Kyle Noke

Bobby Green vs. Jorge Masvidal set for UFC 178 *POLL*

Image

A pair of big winners from this past weekend’s UFC on FOX 12 card have been booked to face each other in September.

Bobby Green (23-5 MMA, 4-0 UFC) and Jorge Masvidal (27-8 MMA, 4-1 UFC) have signed to meet in a lightweight bout at UFC 178. UFC officials announced the new matchup on Tuesday morning.

UFC 178 takes place on Sept. 27 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The main card, headlined by a light heavyweight title fight between champ Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier, will air on pay-per-view following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.

Green stayed unbeaten in the UFC and won for the eighth straight time when he took a split decision from Josh Thomson to open up the main card in Thomson’s home city of San Jose, Calif. After a 4-1 run in Strikeforce, Green came to the UFC with a bang, picking up a “Submission of the Night” bonus against Jacob Volkmann at UFC 156. Then he stopped James Krause with a first-round body kick before decision wins over Pat Healy and Thomson.

Masivdal, also a Strikeforce veteran, won for the second straight time when he topped Daron Cruickshank to close out the preliminary card on Saturday. In April, he beat Healy in Orlando to get back on track after a decision loss to Rustam Khabilov that ended a three-fight winning streak, including wins in his first two UFC fights.

With the addition, UFC 178 now includes:

Champ Jon Jones vs. Daniel Cormier – for light heavyweight title

Conor McGregor vs. Dustin Poirier

Bobby Green vs. Jorge Masvidal

Dominick Cruz vs. Takeya Mizugaki

Tim Kennedy vs. Yoel Romero

Amanda Nunes vs. Cat Zingano

Brian Ebersole vs. John Howard

Patrick Cote vs. Stephen Thompson

UFC ‘Actively Engaged in Conversations’ for Fighter Uniforms

UFC ‘Actively Engaged in Conversations’ for Fighter Uniforms, Ronda Rousey Likely ‘the Face’

Posted on July 29, 2014 by MMAWeekly.com Staff

UFC fighters may not have required uniforms, but the day is apparently coming when they will.

UFC president Dana White said earlier this year, “There is no (uniform) deal. We’re sitting here talking about something that doesn’t exist.”

That may have been true, and it may even be true now, there is not yet a done deal for uniforms. That statement may not hold water for much longer, however, according to a report from AdWeek.

UFC Senior VP of Global Marketing Partnerships Mike Mossholder told AdWeek that the promotion is currently “actively engaged in conversations” with a “premium apparel line” for an exclusive deal to provide uniforms for the 400-plus fighters currently under contract.

A “premium apparel line” would be a company the likes of Nike, Reebok, Under Armour or Adidas.

It was unclear what exactly he meant, but Mossholder also said that UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey would likely be “the face” of any UFC uniform deal that comes to fruition.

Why Rousey?

If you weren’t already a believer in Rousey’s star power, the AdWeek article pointed out that Rousey is the third highest UFC draw in regard to ticket sales. Xyience saw a 12-percent boost in sales when they featured Rousey on their cans. She is a recent ESPY award winner, and has roles in such Hollywood productions as Expendables 3, Fast & Furious 7, and Entourage.

Mossholder gave no indication as to which apparel company was the frontrunner in negotiations or how soon we might see uniforms on UFC fighters.

Luke Rockhold on Belfort and MW title standby

There has been recent news from Luke Rockhold and he speaks about being on stand by in case Belfort doesn't make his title fight against Chris Wiedman (whom will likely just cancel the event in that case, j/k) as well as criticizing Belfort's ability to stay healthy while off the juice:

"I mean, if [Belfort is] clean and healthy, he'll probably get injured." Rockhold according to Yahoo Sports.

He also wondered about Vitor's licencing.

""That licensing is questionable. Is the fact that he cried supposed to make us feel sorry that he’s been a lifelong cheater? He’s pretty much a pathological liar." Rockhold - mma canvas.

Here are the articles.

Yahoo Sports: http://ift.tt/1xp7qKW

UFC middleweight Luke Rockhold has only lost once since 2008, to Vitor Belfort in Brazil back in 2013, and the American Kickboxing Academy fighter is still bitter about it. After all, Rockhold not only lost via violent KO, he lost to Belfort while the former champ was using drugs he would likely not have been allowed to use were he and the UFC not avoiding real commission regulation by keeping his bouts in places like Brazil and Toronto while his Nevada license lapsed.

Since that time, Rockhold has put together two straight wins and is hoping for a title shot in the near future. In fact, Rockhold told reporters this weekend that he's on stand-by to fill in for Belfort should the banned PED-user not make it to his scheduled title bout against Chris Weidmain in December.

"I just don't think Vitor is going to make it to the fight so, I'm going to be ready," Rockhold said.

"I mean, if [Belfort is] clean and healthy, he'll probably get injured. His body is going to fall apart. It's too frail, you know what I mean? He's been doing this [expletive] for too long. And, if he realizes he can't compete off of it, he's probably going to try and slip something in and then he's going to get popped with a test. I just think some way or another, he's somehow going to fall out. So, I'm just going to be ready."

Clearly, Rockhold is still bitter and taking digs at Belfort, however the scenarios he offers do not seem entirely unlikely. After all, Belfort has already failed a drug test this year and, after inexplicably licensing him to fight again with no penalty for the past failed drug test (his second failed one in Nevada) the Nevada Athletic Commission promised to test Belfort lots, and randomly, from here on out.

If Belfort's testosterone is low at this point in his long career and relatively advanced age, as he claims, and he gives up banned testosterone and other drugs, his body may very well not be able to handle the grueling training he has to go through in order to challenge Weidman. Injuries are common in training camps and the 37 year-old is surely extra susceptible to them in this, the 18th year of his professional career, and while he is supposedly coming off of drugs he's relied on for years to increase his testosterone.

and MMA Kanvas : http://ift.tt/1toNtGz

Just last week, Belfort was granted a conditional license to face Weidman on December 7 (read more here) but Rockhold, who was defeated by Belfort via head-kick-TKO in early 2013 has told Bloody Elbow that "mutant" Belfort will be unable to compete for the belt latet this year.

"That licensing is questionable. Is the fact that he cried supposed to make us feel sorry that he’s been a lifelong cheater? He’s pretty much a pathological liar. He should really consider taking up acting. Maybe he should read for the next Expendables movie. He’s pretty much enough of a mutant to fit right in there," he said.

"Here’s my opinion; there’s no way in Hell Vitor makes it to this fight. Something is gonna happen that prevents it. He’s either going to get off steroids, train and then get injured because he’s not on them anymore, get caught for PEDs, or he’s going to back out with an 'injury'. One of those things is going to happen, and Vitor Belfort is not going to make it to his fight," he continued.

It's not the first time that Belfort has come under heavy criticism from his peers - just last week former Strikeforce veteran Tim Kennedy (18-4) told Submission Radio that Belfort was "dripping testosterone from his eyeballs." You can listen to the full interview below.

-----------------------------

I have enjoyed Belfort's fights but I also suppose clean and fair fighting. Should Luke Rockhold come about to secure the title shot against Chris Weidman, it will still be totally cool and awesome to see Rockhold get his due. I sort of give the edge to Belfort over Rockhold to beat Weidman but overall I think that Weidman retains the belt. I have added a poll with relevant opinions to see whom you wish to see fight Weidman. I am picking Belfort because I think it'll be a great stand up fight and get a glimpse to how Anderson vs Weidman 2 should have played out without the injury.

DC will beat Jon Jones 100% guarenteed!!!

I firmly believe that if they fight and no one gets injured then DC will win for sure. This is a really bad match-up for Jon Jones and I don't see how he can defeat the animal that DC is. Jones wrestling is no where near Olympic level, his power is no where near DC's and he's to tall to defend DC's take-downs. Yes he has reach, but Dc has been fighting heavy-weights and he has no issues getting inside. People that disagree with me please comment so that I can say "I told you" when this fight takes place.
