A pair of big winners from this past weekend’s UFC on FOX 12 card have been booked to face each other in September.
Bobby Green (23-5 MMA, 4-0 UFC) and Jorge Masvidal (27-8 MMA, 4-1 UFC) have signed to meet in a lightweight bout at UFC 178. UFC officials announced the new matchup on Tuesday morning.
UFC 178 takes place on Sept. 27 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The main card, headlined by a light heavyweight title fight between champ Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier, will air on pay-per-view following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.
Green stayed unbeaten in the UFC and won for the eighth straight time when he took a split decision from Josh Thomson to open up the main card in Thomson’s home city of San Jose, Calif. After a 4-1 run in Strikeforce, Green came to the UFC with a bang, picking up a “Submission of the Night” bonus against Jacob Volkmann at UFC 156. Then he stopped James Krause with a first-round body kick before decision wins over Pat Healy and Thomson.
Masivdal, also a Strikeforce veteran, won for the second straight time when he topped Daron Cruickshank to close out the preliminary card on Saturday. In April, he beat Healy in Orlando to get back on track after a decision loss to Rustam Khabilov that ended a three-fight winning streak, including wins in his first two UFC fights.
With the addition, UFC 178 now includes:
Champ Jon Jones vs. Daniel Cormier – for light heavyweight title
Conor McGregor vs. Dustin Poirier
Bobby Green vs. Jorge Masvidal
Dominick Cruz vs. Takeya Mizugaki
Tim Kennedy vs. Yoel Romero
Amanda Nunes vs. Cat Zingano
Brian Ebersole vs. John Howard
Patrick Cote vs. Stephen Thompson
