Magnetic Pop shield mount on condenser mic, Problem?

Hello,

I'm hoping someone with knowledge of microphones might be able to answer this question for me. I recently purchased one of these pop filters Hook Studios 375R Pop Filter Side Address Mics Patented Strap Attachment | eBay

I have a CAD e100s which has an integrated shock mount (google to see pics)

I was hoping to use some mounting tape to attach a neodymium magnet to the front of the mic, between the switches and one to the pop shield for an easy snap on mounting solution.

Is there any problem using rare earth magnets near a condenser mic like this?

Thanks!

Would like some feedback on my Metal/Breaking Benjamin guitar tone

Hi guys, just new to the forum here. Ok so I've been trying to record alternative metal (Breaking Benjamin, Trapt, Red, other modern metal type stuff) guitars for about a year or so. Mainly been learning off youtube tutorials so I am far less qualified than an amateur ;)

I used to own a Line 6 Pod UX2, got slightly-less-than-desirable tones from that. Nothing wrong with it, its just I didn't put enough time into tweaking etc... So I know the VERY basic basics when it comes to recording metal guitars.

So I'm playing my ESP LTD EC-1000 with emg 81s through a Peavey Vypyr Tube 60 watt (Using the 6505 setting, everything pretty much at 12 oclock, mids at around 2 oclock, see pic for settings) and micing it up with a single SM57, and running the SM57 into a M-Audio Mobilepre usb interface, and that into Reaper. (Using Superior Drummer 2 for drums btw)

I've positioned the SM57 about 2 - 3 inches from the grill, and its about halfway between the centre of the speaker and the edge of the speaker (I don't have a mic stand so I'm using a box =/). I've seen people on youtube use 30 watt and 15 watt vypyrs with amazing results, but I cannot seem to dial in a good 'in your face' metal tone. Mine tends to sound weak and tinny.

The master volume on the vypyr isn't very loud, I only have it at around 1.5 or 2 out of 12, due to 'circumstances involving neighbours', but its still pretty loud for the room... but when you listen to the guitar track its a bit quiet, not sure how to rectify this. Maybe I should turn up the master volume?

I have attached a clip of one recorded guitar centre panned. I'll post another clip of both guitars panned left and right later on. I would definitely appreciate any feedback or suggestions on how to improve the tone, make it sound more ballsy etc. Thanks for your time guys :)

JD 990 LCD color

Just picked up a used jd 990 and I was wondering what the right lcd colour was?? Mine is a yellowish tint, but when i watch demo's on youtube many of them are a bright green. The contrast settings work fine however, just the color is worrying me...... Anyone got some info on that? hope i didn't buy one with a dying screen.

Behringer MX3282A and Truth B2092a Feedback

This is my first post on this forum and I'll start off by asking a question. I have a Behringer MX3282a 32 channel 8 bus mixer that's been sitting brand new in the box until just now. My problem is baffling me and I'm not sure what to do anymore. I'm trying to connect the Left and right main outputs from the behringer board into the Behringer truth b2092a Active subwoofer which also feed to my studio monitors as well so I can monitor my board with my Studio monitor and sub. Whenever I plug the output of the board into the input of the subwoofer I get an instant feedback loop which goes through every channel on the behringer board, every channel is overloading and its like a pulsing low pitched hum which I heard through the subwoofer before i killed it. No matter what I do I still get this feedback and I was wondering what it could be? The board has never been used before and the monitors and sub will play from any other source other than the board, but when I plug any output from the board (xlr or 1/4 mains) it just kills everything. This has me confused, Thanks! Also note that I've tried plugging the board and subwoofer system into the same circuit on my Furman power conditioner so I doubt its any sort of line hum from that.

Is there a rack unit out there that's just HPFs?

i find myself wanting flexible HPFs in various stages of my analog rig. whether its before a preamp that doesnt have one, or after an old unit that has a bit of a hum, etc.

i wish there was a 1U rack unit that had 8 variable pot 24db/oct HFPs. anything like that exist to your knowledge?!

Parametric EQs for Taming Sweet Spot of Monitors

After room treatment, parametrics have been brought up to correct the sweet spot response of nearfields. Parametrics used for this purpose were mentioned as being less of a problem with phase & time delay(s) when used for this purpose. NOT looking to tune the room, but to correct mild eq response of the monitors direct response using rta mic w/ visual output.

I want to place the parametrics between my interface and 2 powered L&R monitors and powered sub. Later I plan to upgrade to using 2 powered subs to get true stereo sub output despite the rec on just using one as I plan to use a lot of restraint with the bass when using the set-up. So, this may mean 4x parametrics, 2x dual channel models, or an all in one itb unit (digital?).

Do not really want anything used...... In that case KT DN410 was recommended as a good parametric in several other threads. Is there any say $200 max (per channel) units available new?

Also I really want an external unit dedicated for this purpose.

Since I need 2 way function, another option may be;

Dbx driverack, behringer unit, or XTA units were recommended although the XTA's I found are a bit pricey @ a couple thousand bux.

The Room guys on here seem to bring up decent behringer parametric units, what units specifically are they referring to? Digital Behringer parametric units?

Thanx

I really like the synth pad in this Genesis song. I have a couple questions:

1. Does anyone know what synth they used?

2. Any synth plug-ins that might approximate it?

Sound clicking after recording 4 mics at once.

Hi everybody, my first question here; thank you for reading.

I was recording a drum kit with 4 mics namely a Behringer C3 (overhead), a shure SM57 (snare), a Behringer XM8500 (kick) and one I only know was a Samson mic for toms (rented at the place). All recorded through a FCA1616 Behringer interface into a Lenovo U310 Core i5 4 RAM using SONAR X3 Pro.

After having recorded it is sounding like this:

http://ift.tt/1uOmscK

I tried to change the latency (buffer depth) while recording in the ASIO control panel from 512 to 768 as less latency caused me problems in the past, but It didn't work.

Do you think is there sth I can do about it? Please don't tell me to record again!

Thank you again.

Problem Using Headphones w/ Traktor S2 Controller

A while ago, I bought a secondhand Traktor S2 controller but haven't been using it much for the simple reason of not being able to use headphones with it. I can mix songs together visually by using sync, but I'd like to be able to cue a track in my headphones and learn how to beatmatch without the help of sync.

Plugging my headphones directly into the "PHONES" jack on the Traktor controller doesn't do anything, and I can't seem to get any results from plugging headphones into my audio interface either. I'm quite inexperienced in the art of audio setups, so any advice would be appreciated.

My whole setup is quite simple - I'm using two KRK Rokit 8 monitors with a Presonus Audiobox USB interface.

Any thoughts?

Focusrite Saffire Mixcontrol Questions

Hey guys, first post ever, although I have gained a whole bunch of insight from the site for years.

I have a couple questions about my new Scarlett 6i6 and the accompanying mixcontrol.

First of all, is it possible to make the physical master knob also raise/reduce the volume for the s/pdif output? This is crucial for me as I have multiple speaker devices playing at the same time through the analog outs and the s/pdif outs. I read on an amazon review that this was not possible before, but with the new drivers is possible. I have the newest drivers but it's not connected for me!

Secondly, I have seen a bunch of mixcontrol videos where the user has the ability to use a vst within the mixcontrol program. I will need to do this to high-pass one of my subwoofers. I see that they are able to click a button next to the "routing preset" button, but there is no such button on my mixcontrol.

Here's a video with the vst in the mixcontrol. It is a larger device but I would imagine the functionality should be the same.

Here's a video of what I'm seeing.

If this is impossible, does anybody know how I could do this?

Thanks!

What Mic/s Should I Buy Next?

I have a relatively small mic collection...

- 3 SM57s

- 2 Behringer B1s

- EV PL33

- 4 EV PL35

I generally record Rock, Punk & Metal bands and some solo acoustic singer/songwriters. I've upgraded my plugin collection and now I am in the market to get some new microphones. What would be some good choices for the music I record? I'm looking to spend no more than $300 a piece per mic. I am already planning on purchasing a Shure SM7B and eventually a pair of Oktava MK012 mics based on video reviews I've seen and the praise they get frequently on this site.

Logic 10.1 Saving "File" vs Saving "Alternative"

Logic 10.1 has a new "Alternatives" option. I can't figure out why, and what's the difference between saving "File" vs saving "Alternative"

From Apple's online manual:

Logic Pro X: Use project alternatives and backups

When Show Advanced Tools is selected in the Advanced preferences pane, you can create alternative versions of a project, each with a unique name and different settings. Alternatives are saved as part of the project, and share the same assets. Alternatives for the current project appear in the File > Alternatives submenu.

Each time you save a project by choosing File > Save (or pressing Command-S), a backup of the current project alternative is saved (up to ten backups per alternative). In the Project > Revert to submenu, backups for the current alternative are listed in descending order from newest to oldest.

Create an alternative version of a project

Choose File > Alternatives > New Alternative.

Enter a unique name for the alternative, then click Done.

Edit project alternatives

Choose File > Alternatives > Edit Alternatives.

Figure. Edit Alternatives dialog.

In the Edit Alternatives window, select an alternative from the list, then do either of the following:

To rename the alternative: Click Rename, then enter a new name.

To delete the alternative: Click Remove.

You cannot remove the Main alternative.

Click Done.

Choose a different alternative

Choose File > Alternatives, and choose a different alternative from the list.

If you have made changes after you last saved the current alternative, a Save dialog appears, so that you can save your changes in the current alternative before switching to a different alternative.

Choose a different backup of the current alternative

Choose File > Revert to, and choose a backup from the submenu.

In the Revert to Backup dialog, click OK.

Juno-DI Keyboard causing crackle/breakup in multiple DAW's - help!

Hi Everyone,

First time posting here on GS. I'm having an issue with crackling/breakup using my new Juno DI Keyboard with multiple DAW's. The problem exists mainly when using certain patches, especially the piano patches at the higher octaves. Single notes will not produce the sound, only chords.

The chain:

Juno DI Keyboard

Tascam US 1800 USB Interface

M-Audio BX 5 Studio Monitors

CPU: Lenovo Ideapad P400 Touch

The issue exists both in Reaper and Mixcraft 6.

I have tried using balanced speaker wire from the interface output.

I have made sure the audio buffer rates are equal in DAW and Interface, and have tinkered with changing the buffer rate in Reaper while setting the Tascam rate to adjust automatically.

The two usb cables I'm using admittedly are from a local thrift shop and therfore I cannot verify if they are 2.0 (Tascam interface max is 2.0)

It sounds to me like there could be some buffering/sample rate issue. I'm about at my wits end with this crackling noise...

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance!

Torn between the best nearfield monitors

So I spent 2014 putting together a great home studio which gets me GREAT RESULTS. The plan was to get a vocal chain that would the end all for me, which now consists of a Mojave ma200, Great River me1nv, and an Avalon into a Steinberg Ur824. The plan was to get great takes here then send off my tracks to get mixed and mastered elsewhere, so I grabbed a pair of HS7's and figured it would be enough, and it was.

The problem is that I've sent my tracks to two different studios and it seems like I end up preferring my mix to theirs. They definitely clean it up, and do a way better master than I ever could, but my vocals always seem boring vs my own vocal mix.

So I'm going to move really soon and decided that I'd like to invest in a GREAT monitor room to do my own mixes and just have the other guy master it when I'm done. I have about $700 in GIK Acoustic panels and will probably spend a bit more once I'm set up.

I'm going to eventually upgrade the HS7s into maybe some Genelecs down the line; bigger speakers which will be a bit distanced from me for a loud reference mix. First though, I'm going to invest in some nearfields and really don't know which way to go here. I'm looking at smaller monitors, maybe some CMS40's or Adam A3Xs, but I'm really not sure if I should be going bigger(cms50/a5x/some other candidate) but these are going to act as my main critical monitors with the big boys being my reference. That said, I'm looking for recommendations. I do 90% hip hop music, and I know bass is a big deal in the genre, but, that would be more addressed in my future Genelec set.

All advice would be helpful, thanks!!

Hard choice : Adam A77x vs Opal Event

Hi,

I will soon change my logitech low-end speakers it will be mainly for listening to music and partying. I hesitate between these two models after hearing the praise.

I intend to also start mixing later in time because I am passionate about electric guitar and trip hop and jazz fusion project that will be my future if I have time to practice.

I wonder which would be suitable for my style of music I listen to mostly electronic music: house music, deep house, retro 90's house

And also jazz fusion, trip hop, funk/rock

I love dynamic short rhythmic music and dancing but also progressive musics like rock/ trip-hop/jazz.

I am also very demanding low level that I would have at least as hard-hitting bass and deep as audio speakers nightclub.

I wonder if the A77x sound better and more detailed knowing that they are 3 ways and Opal only 2 ways I think the number of "ways" is an important physical constraint in the quality of sound.

I read on the forum the Adam A77x was better in low mid but i don't know what style of music sound low mid ?

By cons I've read that Event Opal were generally better at any level except in sweet spot which is ridiculous.

Which speacker is the most suited for me ?

Thank you in advance ! hooppie

Is one of the secrets of the best sound design to not overthink it?

I find some of the best sounds when im not trying at all, yet while trying to find "that sound" I find it's a literally endless search. Do you find your best sounds easily? Even when im recording/sampling for new sounds the source that im recording ends up not being used and stuff I accidentally pick up gets used the most.

On a side note, something I practice is to be in the ebb and flow of life beyond any context or premeditation, something that I struggle with as I have lived a life watching mostly instead of engaging... I wonder if that's transferring in music, it seems when sounds appear in my recordings I didn't intend to capture it churns this deep magical feeling inside... What churns your magic? :cop:

Is there a difference in the mixing, and recording of rap vocals vs singing vocals?

For example, singing vocals will need more reverb correct?

I'm sure that there's a difference, I just went to a primarily "hip-hop" studio to record a soul record, and when I was done, the audio was complete garbage, to the point where if you didn't know better, you would genuinely think that I recorded it at home in my bed room WITHOUT all the fancy gear.

Just trying to understand what went wrong. I understand that that it's not the engineers job to turn hot garbage into Pavarotti or Celine Dion, I understand this, HOWEVER, if I'm walking away with a version that I honestly could have recorded better myself, then what's the point?

**Edit:**

Oh, and before anyone says "You went to a hip-hop studio to record soul.. THAT'S your problem", the engineer promised me that he had experience recording singers, and showed me a few tracks.. In any event, I now think that recording studios are a waste of money, I had a hunch before, but now I'm sure of it. In this day an age you don't NEED to spend $150 + on studio time to put out QUALITY vocals, remember, a recording studio is just that, a recording studio, it's where you RECORD, not where "GREAT IDEAS" or "Production" is made, yes ideas, and production CAN happen in a studio, but they can also happen elsewhere, when you go to the studio the MAIN objective is clean and professional vocals, unless you're in a band and need to record drums, or recording for a label, I SERIOUSLY don't see why you NEED a professional studio and why you can't get clean vocals at home. Just my thoughts.

Discuss.

Building fastest noise gate ever

Hello.

In short, the problem gates I used and heard are too soft. Aphex I have is fast, but nice, clean and barely noticeable, though can get some crack on drums. Something opposite is what I think of. Something, that will chop audio to pieces, like sith on meth with lightsaber. Manufactured units are engineered to be innoticeable, so I think of custom build gate.

Roughly, it should go from 0 to 1 gain on the first hint of hitting threshold, in the matter of microseconds, and should have the ability to close as fast.

Is it hard to build a noise gate, generally?

What minimum reaction time can be achieved with current technology? Im speaking less than 5 microseconds here, maybe even nanoseconds?

As last resort, maybe there are existing units that fits my description and escaped me?

Thanks for listening this nutcase talk.

studiolive Ai 16.4.2, very specific questions!

So I'm basically trying to layout my studio plans for the foreseeable future (10+ years?). I currently use a tascam us1641, so basically anything is a step up, but I want a good centerpiece to the studio. So here's the specific questions I couldn't find answers to , regarding this particular interface/mixer.

I plan to eventually use almost entirely outboard preamps. I currently own 2 warm audio wa12-500s, which I love. I'd like to have like 12 of em, and a few other pres. Do the line ins on the SL completely bypass the preamp circuit? Obviously I want all tone/color coming from my pres and just have a clean signal to the ADC. I'm also assuming you have the option to bypass or use the included fx and processors at your descression while tracking?

Also, how are the converters? Heard the new ai had updated/better ad/da. How would they compare to rme, apogee, etc? I know converters can be a somewhat small sonic footprint, but I'd rather have something semi professional, or something that won't degrade what goes in or comes out.

Also read something about the quality summing matrix. Is that just when using the board live, and your actual daw would be doing the summing when mixing itb? I'd eventually like to get an analog summing box, which the 16 outs (via dsub) on the SL would be great for.

And lastly, assuming you can bypass the preamp circuit. And bypass all onboard fx while tracking, does it bypass the fader level also? Could I use the faders/fx to set up a control room mix to listen to whats being tracked and/or send a monitor mix for the people recording with out actually affecting the raw signal. Or would you need to use like the Control Room in your daw and leave the board for mixing?

This is a very interesting piece in a price I can afford if the answer to these questions is yes. I also looked at a few interface only type options (no control surface/fx/etc) but they don't seem to meet the same price/quality/feature/IO ratio. But open to alternative suggestions also. thanks.

Avid Artist Control. Should I? Or...

Looking to buy a control surface for mixing purposes and I'm looking at the Avid artist control because of the 100mm faders, smooth response & the size. I'm concerned that I'm going to spend time trouble shooting this thing and with my ADD I know if that's the case this thing will just end up collecting dust.

Troubleshooting Nord Electro problem

Hi folks,

I have been trying to troubleshoot a problem with my setup. I have a nord electro rack going to a little ART tube mic Pre, to a QSC 8'' mostly for live use for a rhodes patch. I've noticed that after 20 minutes or so, some loss of "punch" clarity, and volume in certain patches. I use the mic pre to bring the line level up as the output from the Nord is really weak. When I first power this up the rhodes sounds clear and punchy, but it seem to fade with time, and come back after a pause in the playing.

I never see the needle on the Mic pre move. is this a problem?

My first thought was the tube in the Mic pre, but swapping that out didn't seem to fix it.

curious if any of the experienced gear slutz have some ideas of what might be cause the chi to drain from my rig???? :synth:hittt

SM7B question

Hi guys, gotta a newbie question here. I have a very deep baritone voice, think Eddie Vedder/Peter Steele, which is also the type of music that I sing. I have done a ton of research, and unless someone here can direct me to a better mic for my needs, I think I have decided on an SM7B with a cloudlifter. The only thing is, everything I read online about it people were using it in a recording atmosphere. I do plan on doing some recording with it, but how does this mic function just going thru pa speakers? Nothing huge, I have a music room my friends and I jam in, and sometimes we move everything outside for bonfire parties and such. It will be going thru and A&H 14fx mixer if that makes any difference. Thanks in advance.

PT Air plugins alternatives

Hey,

Recently discovered the Air Plugins in PT.

What got my attention is the air plugins, especially the Air Enhancer and the Low-Fi plugin.

The low-fi plugin has some very nice saturation. I've found many others that produce similar saturation.

The Air Enhancer however produces some very pleasing harmonics. It is labed as a "harmonic exciter" plugin, however it is not a typical exciter (like softube Abbey Road or similar). It has another way of producing harmonics, very pleasing to the ear.

I wonder if anyone has some across a plugin that is similar to Air Enhancer ?

Thanks

Alex

U 87 love and hate

Hey there.

I was wondering.

Since I personally really dislike the in your face almost EQd sound of that u87

It seems to be the Holy grail for a LOT of people.

Isn't it better to make stuff stand out in a Mix controlled via EQ AFTER recording?

I myself prefer a more neutral sound like the u89 and tlm 170 any day.

Please explain what makes this aggressiveness so attractive to you.

I think there is a lack of bottom end you just can't bring back.

compression?

just wondering what the common applications are for it. i'm a basement enthusiast, ITB.

i started using limiting to solidify placement on most things, just use comp for vox and parallel drum now. and ever since i discovered the limiter, every time i try compression i can't help but to hear some kind of loss of clarity; it just makes everything sound bad. not sure if that's just me or what.

guess it's supposed to flatten it, but why not just use a limiter?

also i'd like to know why compression is an official part of the mastering process, because i hear nothing good about it. although i'm just a guitarist.

rather just pile on an extra limiter, call it a day, right?

Sequential MAX/Sixtrack

The SCI MAX, much hated, the worst synth ever I heard somewhere..?!

I happened to have one. Actually I like the sound of it, it's got real character and definitely sounds analog. However in standard form it's just too limited to use.

It has a great midi spec, everything is controllable on MIDI CC, excellent. But it has basic limitations like patch saving and only 20 patches can be stored. It has no controls on the panel, I think this is partly why it is despised so much. Still, it's a real SCI synth, the board and voicing is essentially a six-track.

I've had one kicking around for years, hasn't had much love or use, due to the usability limitations. Still, it didn't cost me much at all and it seemed a shame to just through it out with the trash, so I kept it for a future project.

So, I just did the Tauntek mods to it, now it's like a Six-track, has proper 6 voice unison mode. Has all patches from six-track, multi-track and max on ROM, 100 user patch storage. MIDI limitations solved. Also now you can save any patch you've modified via CC edits. The MidiDesigner Six-track completely works

with this synth so you can combine new and old into something quite useful. Also my X-station makes a perfect controller for it, works like a charm.

I wondered if anyone has one, or knows of any additional modifications that can be made. I'm quite interested to tinker around in the analog side.

If anyone wants to chuck one out (go on, make some space), please chuck it my way :D as I've a new project idea for a second one.

Also spares, need a couple of rubber keys. Got any spare parts?

Tell me your vintage underdog synth revamp projects, I'm quite interested in this area at the moment. Seems more rewarding and fun that blowing lots of $$$ on the latest or most high-priced 'trendy' synths on the market at the moment. I like variety, even if I can't end up keeping or using it all at once, it's nice to experiment and do something slightly different.

Profire2626 firewire ok but no sound and pre's

Hi all!

I'm beying recording in my free time(so little time) on my profire2626 and a digimaxd8.. It's being 5years now! The only problem that i being had it's that the profire2626 firewire get broken, but they put a new one and it's working better than the old one, no problem at all.

Last night i was recording a session, and it was all going great, but i think there was a spike on the eletricity and my profire pre's, inputs and outputs are not working anymore... But on the windows it's like normal, the mixer is working fine, firewire connection is good.. but no sound at all.

The weird part is that when i turn it on, the pre's gave a green and a red signal like they did before. But when i turn on the 48v no red lights are on.

What i don't want to think is that i burn all the board of inputs and outputshjghfgg .. please help me

I'm now going to open it to see

Just opened it ut.. it's seem all ok

First synth for ambient: Supernova II or Nord Lead 2x?

Hi all, this is my first post in this forum.

I'm thinking of buying a Supernova II or a Nord Lead 2x, both in rack. I want it to make a kind of vintage ambient/space/new age music. My influences are Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Steve Roach and 80s new age artists. Also, this will be my first synth and I have no idea about synthesis. I'd like it to be not too complicated since I want to learn from scratch with it. Which one do you think would be best for me?

This is very close to what I plan to do:

But also darker drones and pulses as in 70s progressive electronic acts.

I'm open to other hardware alternatives as well, taking into account that I'm a beginner and haven't got any gear.

Thanks in advance!

Decent speakers for a keyboard MIDI controller

I'm looking for a speaker(s)? for my keyboard. Problem is, I don't know what I should be looking for. When I play on it, the sound comes out of the monitors which are on the other side of the room. It's mildly distracting but I've ignored it for a while. I'd like to plop a big speaker or something right behind the keyboard so that I get the illusion of having sound come from the keyboard itself. But like I said, I have no idea what I should be looking for. I'm not particularly good with hardware so I don't know if I would use a PA speaker and set it on a piece of furniture, or use actual studio monitors for it, or use a keyboard amp. The keyboard in question is an M-audio oxygen 88 so it only has USB. (I've seen some other keyboards with a plethora of connections and ports and what-not).

Anyway, I'm not sure what would work best, but I mainly use it as a piano, so it would need to be crisp and clear. Do you guys recommend something or other? Thanks!

The 80’s called, it wants it’s studio back...

Tracked 2 singers today with a Neumann U87 and Telefunken U47 into a vintage 1073 and Urei 1176 Rev F as I listened on my Genelec 1031s that are propped up on the meter bridge of my E Series SSL. Wow, how weird is that, it’s 2015. My thoughts tonight, after researching, testing and owning nearly every piece of notable pro audio gear on the planet for the past 2 decades or so this is where I have ended up at. If I had never tried a piece of gear and never read a review or anything and just asked someone ‘what’s the most popular gear everyone is using' I would have ended up in the exact same place. Lesson for me, they are classics for a reason.

Anyway, this is the kind of post I write at 4am when I can’t sleep because I’m obsessing on tone.... Time to get a shrink? lol Should I sell my beloved 1971 Marshall Super Tremolo for a Kemper? Hmmmmmm

Peace,

James

Quality Cable for Sub 37 to Echo AudioFire

Dear Gearguys,

I know this is a heavily discussed and controversial topic, but I have some rather specific questions about cable quality.

There seem to opposing opinions on the topic of cable quality vs sound quality. But most of them seem to be d'accord when it comes to guitar cables, because of the low output, if I understand it correctly.

Now, I have this new Synthesizer, the Moog Sub 37, and it has a very low output as well.

Would it be correct to assume that I will need a high quality cable as well?

And are the cables getting better step by step for the money one invests or is it best quality or nothing?

And is it worth it, when connecting it to my Echo Audiofire interface or will the cable quality be lost in the converters anyway?

And could someone please recommend a specific cable or company that is available in germany?

I am not into soldering, so I will need a ready made cable...

Thanks for any advice!

Please help me understand why i need Multi-Pattern Mic vs Cardioid only?

im not an engineer, mainly composer, i have never tracked vocals before nor done any recording. however, i do want to learn and very serious. so my question is why do i need a multi-pattern mic vs cardioid. multi patterns are expensive so whats the advantages/disadvantages besides the costs ofcourse.

if i do this, my room is untreated, the best i can afford is kaotica ball or a space filter. i dont intend to track drums or anything. my main intention is recording a hiphop artist and tracking vocals. i dont play guitars, but i still would love to learn how to record properly incase i decide i want to have a guitar down the line or have a session musician.

which pattern is used for what reason? what is the purpose for each, examples would be great. please explain in laymen terms, as i dont know much about the engineering side? why its good to invest in a multi pattern mic vs just a plain ol cardioid. id appreciate your help.

Recommendation please, Tannoy Reveal 502 and JBL 305 LSR305

Decision decision :-( So I had my mind set on a year old used JBL 305 from a local guy for $180 that took very good care in a very professional environment. Than I poke my head at my local GC today and I find out that they are selling the newest Tannoy reveal 502 series for only $175 for both monitors until this Sunday which I think is one heck of a deal! The problem is, it's very hard to accurately judge anything inside of GC environment. Especially when it comes to monitors. So this is where I need your opinion especially from anyone that had any real listening experience with the new reveal 502. What would be the smarter decision guys.

Malrun's new album

Well I don't know if I'm the only one that listens to Malrun (putting my Danish metal face on from time to time), but man their new album (Two Thrones) sounds amazing to my ears. I mean, for the genre, the whole mix is just beautiful.

I'm reading that Jacob Hansen did the mixing and mastering for it and if that is the case then I'd like to shake that man's hand.

Sorry, I just had to post this...back to listening...

Problem with Presonus StudioLive 16.4.2

I've tried asking around on presonus forum, but BUMP big time. Even their support system is not working.

Iv got a SL 16.4.2, which has started acting weirdly. My fat Channel's parameters change it self (threshold, eq, gate, etc). Lights moves up or down on their own.

First i though its just the lights and may not the be effecting the tone texture, But it changes the sound too. "sux"

I tried upgrading the UC and did everything I could. But no luck. I hope I can get a neat trouble-shooting tip/guide.

Iv tried looking for forums and posts around internet to see if any one else has a same problem.

Im worried and I need it to be fixed.

8 Foot Beefstick (Deep House) (Free d/l)

This is for a competition I sometimes enter over at KVR where you have to create all the sounds using only one soft synth and use only free effect plugs or the plugs that came with your DAW. This month it was u-He's new Hive which is still in beta, but if you want to see what it's capable of besides the Sylenth-like super saws, everything including drums were made from Hive.

Oh, and it's a shout out to my co-worker's college band who got wasted one night and ate all but six inches of some 8 foot long beef stick someone had, then they wrote a song about it, which was apparently the band's crowning achievement. I've always told him I'd name one of my productions 8 foot beefstick, so here it is...

Enjoy!

External/Addon Vu/Db meters?

Hey all,

I,ve been looking to get my self a decent analog console on budget. So I decided to look into Mackie Vlz4 series (32). I find it quite decent and obviously in budget. The only thing "as a consumer point of view". It has no channel metering.

Is there any product or way to add external meters? Vu or Db? to cater my 32 channels, cause I believe it can really encourage the workflow.

Any input is appreciated.

Cubase 8.05 bugs out at higher buffer settings?

Unlike 7.5, 8.05 seems to really get unhappy when I increase the buffer size in order to handle large sessions - totally the opposite of anything I've experienced with a daw before!

At 1024 buffer cubase reports that it's "disabling asio guard" and then proceeds to make a lot of strange noises.

Meter latency with Scarlett 2i2 interface?

I usually use PCI/FireWire interfaces but I picked up a Scarlett 2i2 for smaller jobs. In Logic I've got samples set to 128, Core Audio enabled and the Scarlett is selected as the input/output device on my Mac (no driver required). For some reason I'm encountering a lot more latency than I expected. Logic says that at 128 samples, it should be about 10ms of latency. No way. I'm getting about 500ms to 1 Second of latency. I have a fast quadcore machine with 16GB of ram so that isn't the problem.

What's going on here?

TC Impakt Twin not turning ON.

Hello all,

today i left the house and because i am a smoker i left my studio window and few other windows open in the house and left. I came back 6-7 hours later. I am in NYC and it was very cold. I came home, closed the windows, turned the heat on and right away started turning equipment on. My PC was flickering a little, i mean one of my monitors then i restarted it became normal. One of my speakers is makins some weird noise even just by turning it on without being connected to the sounds card. Problem is now the Speaker and my Impakt Twin, the Impakt Twin will not turn ON, its like dead. The Adapter works i can see the green light but the card it self it wont turn on. It is still cold here so i will wait until it gets warmer and lets see. Any clues?

Thanks

Is there something pretty much exactly like a Korg EMX1 but which is polyphonic?

I have a Korg EMX1 as my main sequencer,

i really like the TR type of drum programming, the ease of use and the flexibility of it very much.

But sometimes i wanted it could sequence chords.

Which hardware sequencer in the same pricetag can do that?

Wanting to upgrade my studio projects C4's as overheads

I've got a couple of SP c4's that I'm using for overheads, and while they have been good, I'd like to find something a bit more detailed and smoother.

I'm using a Heil pr40 for the kick, Audix i5 for the snare top, and AKG 2020 for the snare bottom, and a Neuman tlm-102 for the hats.

The drums are a Maple set, in fairly close quarters, but I do have treatment on some walls (but note behind the kit, unfortunately, where I really need it!).

Music is mainly funk, reggae, rock.

I've heard a lot of good things about the miktek c5's. I'd like to keep those as my high end for price.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Will I get anywhere by going up just a little? ie Rode nt5, Oktaka, etc?

I should also say that I also have a TLM-103. Getting another one of those (or the TLM-102) might be an option, but I use it a lot for vocals, so I'd have to keep putting it up & taking it down.

Achieve lowest latency? What are the limitations? E-drums

Latency = (buffer size/sample rate)*2

Got it. Lowest buffer size and highest sample rate will give me the lowest latency, but also require the most horsepower from my computer. As an e-drummer, I need the lowest to play with midi -> superior drummers sounds live. Fast 32nd notes are throwing me off at 64 buffer size, but honestly quite respectable for slower beats.

Question #1

How do I achieve a buffer size of 32? Right now my limits in superior drummer and Ohm studio are both 64. What is keeping it from going to 32? My drum module/drivers, usb out mixer/drivers, the daw software I'm using, or my sound card's hardware/drivers?

Question #2

What is the absolute way to get the lowest latency using internal software to convert midi notes and play them back out again (midi from drums -> daw/superior drummer conversion -> back out to audio live)? Money not being an issue here. From what I've read, 0 latency interfaces is not the bottleneck here, the daw/software/drivers to convert the midi notes and push them back out again is, which goes back to my 32 buffer size question.

I need to know how to achieve the lowest latency possible, costs aside.

Digital reverb hardware programming beyond the bare basics?

Let's say we have a typical mid level Lexicon reverb and wish to program it beyond the "type", "predelay", and "length" of the 'verb.

2) What methods have you used to efficiently arrive at the 'verb you wanted...and that was not a straightforward factory preset?

Any Neve 2074 info?

TC Helicon vocal effects unit WITHOUT harmonies?

I'm really digging the idea of having a vocal processing unit for live performance, and TC helicon VoiceLive seemed like a great option. However, I do not like nor will ever use many features on the VoiceLive3 (Harmonies to me sound fake and would rather use live backing tracks, have no need for a looper or all the guitar effects, etc) and thus feel like I would be paying a premium for functionality I would never use.

Are there any sort of similar units out there with pitch correction, doubling / thickening, and vocal effects like reverb, delay, modulation, etc? Does TC Helicon even make a vocal unit without harmonies? Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

P.S. I'm also thinking of possibly doing all this in the box with a midi foot controller or pre-programed sequence in Logic or Cubase. Anyone with experience running a computer live? I'm even considering using a synced up Logic session live which would control our lighting as well as our effects (i.e. that big delay at the end of a verse, or that grungy distorted vocal during the bridge, etc are all automatically triggered via automation in the sequence.) Or is it best to try to play everything live via pedalboard effects?

question on mutliple sound cards and world clock

ok, in brief im running on a M audio delta 1010LT card, and now ive got my hands on a second card which i want to install, apart from pc tower itself i don't use any digital or midi hardware in set up, so when i install second card would it be a case of plug and play (apart from some fine tunning settting up etc) or would i still have to sync world clocks between cards?? card already installed is set to using internal world clock ..where ever that may be lol

any advice before i install and ruin my weekend? hittt

Or can you use stereo reverb for that? Is it the same for delay? Slightly confused.

Summed track stacks inside summed track stacks

Hello,

I'm new to this website and have searched the internet for some definitive answer on this, and it seems not likely - but I was wondering if it's possible to create a summed track stack that contains other summed stacks. I read this post (http://ift.tt/1vgofgi) about summed stacks in folder stacks. Does anyone know if this is currently a possibility in Logic Pro X?

Thanks!

MId- High end studio monitors for Tech house

Man oh man !

I have been producing for a decent amount of time so no need to get into the acoustics and 101's about everything but I am facing a big problem. It is very hard for me to hear the monitors I have in mind based on reviews. I have heard the Focal CMS 65 , Focal Alpha 65,equitor d8 or 5"s and even the PIONEER SDJ08 are very good for Electronic music. I am looking for a nice set with great bass response that go nice and low, nothing hyped though. I know know, why not use a sub ? Well I honestly do not believe in using a sub to mix I think it can cause more damage then good if not placed right. I had a pair of A&'s with the ADAM sub it was nice but it felt kind of Blah at times and not to mention harsh and fatigued. They did have a lot of ups though. very good imaging & nice mids. The mids translated very well 99% of the time. I know enough about mixing to make my mixes come out pretty standard. I really want to hear more feedback on the monitors I had mentioned, I hear the focals mids are hyped then I hear the equators do not have much bass then I hear the pioneers are the best kept secret by some the best techno producers. When it comes to production you have to spend a few so I do not mind spending 500-1500 or 2000 for a nice set. I just want something deep in the low end nice mids and decent highs that trans late well and will not harsh your ears like lower end adam. I mean out of all the speakers I said which one and why ?

Should I sell all my gear and get...?

Before I purchased my gear I came onto gearslutz to get advice about what to get and boy was I clueless. I wanted to get 4 channels of high quality front-end to do my tracking and send my tracks out for mixing. So I got the following

Lynx Aurora 8 channel TB

Neve Portico pres X 2 (4 channels)

3 decent mics (I won't name them so as too keep it simple, but suffice it to say that they have a value of around $2500)

I have been using it and loving it all but the thing is, I only really track 2 channels and not 4 so I kind of have this set up for 4 - 8 channels that seems a bit excessive in some ways. If I sold what I had and downscaled to two channels, I could get a really high-end mic and maybe use a all-in-one unit like the apollo twin or something which has pre's and AD/DA and is an interface. Not sure if the sound will be inferior to what I have now though, that is my only concern. I got some of the stuff used so won't lose too much if I resell.

So what can you advise me?

Should I sell all my gear and get...?

Plug ins not showing

Hello. I recently installed a free plug-in (Black Mamba basses) and it does not show up in my AU instruments list in Reaper. I simply dragged and dropped the .component file into my Macintosh HD/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components folder with all of my other instruments and effect (which DO show up in Reaper). I'm a little confused as to why this instrument isn't available. I tried removing it, opening Reaper; closing Reaper, putting the component file back in plug-ins folder and reopening Reaper to get it to rescan instruments, but nothing shows up. Any ideas why this is happening or any other solutions? Thanks!

Sorry if this is a double post, tried earlier, but I didn't see it posted.

Mics into USB audio interface into 8 track tape machine??

So I bought a beat up Tascam portastudio 488 tape recorder, and when I try and bounce multiple tracks (i.e drums) to a single a track it never works. It's quite a temperamental machine.

But I was thinking about whether I could put multiple inputs (i.e drums) into my Tascam US-1641 audio interface, and then record those multiple channels onto a single track on the tape machine. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Clients going emotional and stuff!

Hi there! Let's share our stories on the clients going mad!

Let me start with my today's story:

Here's this rapper guy, he brings me some funky boom-bap beats and we record his rap over them. What he did wrong:

1) He consistently kept his mouth too far away from the mic; he would rap one line right into the mic, and the next line somewhere to the left where his lyrics sheet was.

2) He promised to pay "soon when he gets a job". At the same time he bothered me with his presence every day (i had a high temperature and terrible headaches)

3) He was OH SO SURPRISED when he learnt my clients are given full ready tracks only after they paid me. (he was like "are you crazy"? "i really need it now", etc.)

4) He would rush me to mix and master stuff. My ears are ringing, and this guy wants the thing mixed and mastered NOW.

5) When he gets the track via internet (yeah...), he starts overreacting like a PMSing bit??. In 10 minutes he generated a couple kilobytes of insults.

6) THEN, after I deleted all his sessions and stated I'm not working with him, he finally decides to change his tone and send some reference tracks... trap, dirty south, crunk tracks. How was I supposed to mix this funky boom-bap with this kind of reference anyway?

7) Finally, when I say I deleted everything and nothing can be done with the track he got, he gets mad one more time. Now he harasses our common friends and makes them call me to ask stupid questions for him. By the intonation of my friends, he sure demonized me :-)

And here is the question dear sirs: wtf was I supposed to do? :-)

(yet another) Studio Monitors as Multimedia Speakers (thread)

Hello fellow gearslutzers,

After almost two weeks of lurking around, this is my first posting here, and I come to you with an (cue trumpets) age old question: can I use a pair of studio monitors for casual listening?

HELP!

To explain a little bit: I move around quite often, I rent out, I rent out small. So no acoustic treatments, no studio setup, no production per se etc. But I'm a big fan of music, new and old. So I listen a lot. While working, while chilling. I listen mostly to electronic music, all kinds, and a little jazz and classic. What I don't listen to is: club, house, minimal, drone, pop, metal, that stuff...

I can't afford a decent hi-fi mainly due to space and money (or rather value for money) constraints. My current budget for this little investment right now is in the range of 400E, that's around 500$. I don't know if I can go higher than that.

My main (amateurish) concerns are enumerated below:

1. the sweet spot. I've been reading around a lot about this and I can't form a definitive opinion on this, especially not remotely. I didn't yet have the chance to listen in person to a set of studio monitors, especially not in 'casual' conditions. Am I to understand then that if I listen to these off axis, as in completely ignoring manufacturer and studio monitor placement guidelines, I will get a much weaker perceived musical reproduction of the material than with a set of hi-fi's?! Could someone try to elaborate on this aspect a bit?

2. room treatment. As mentioned earlier, I will be listening to these in some 'smallish' apartments I am renting around town, so I think investing in room treatment is somewhat out of the question. How much are these monitors dependent, (again) for casual listening, on room parameters? Are they entirely not recommended under these conditions?

3. monitor harshness. As I understood some monitors are perceived as having a harsher sound, and then some others are perceived as having a smoother sound. It is understood then that harsher sounding monitors will result in ear fatigue faster than a smoother sounding monitor. Does this hold in real life conditions? Should I be worried then that this, combined with the neutrality of monitors in general, their clinical sound, will result in a tiresome experience for casual listening?

I think that is all.

Please understand that I am pretty amateurish when it comes to speakers/monitors, but I've become very interested in the last weeks. These questions are aimed more at learning about all the aspects of the tech in question, and less at nitpicking. I do want to understand this medium better, so do be generous in your arguments.

Something important: I'm playing mostly mp3's at the moment. Not even the best kind (if there ever was such a thing). So please advice on that if possible. I have a vintage iMac, and a laptop - so these will be main sound sources. How much of a role will these factor in?

i'm trying to come up with some david tudor rainforest type stuff. i was told the basic idea is the plug the outputs of a device back into the inputs or send the end of a signal chain back to the beginning to create a no input loop but i'm confused how it works exactly. i tried to look up some set ups but couldn't really find anything. can anyone shed some light? i was thinking i could run something into channel 2 of my delay which has the wet out then into other various gear then back into channel 1 on the delay and then run the channel 1 out of the delay to the amp. thoughts?

Setting up a stereo system

I'm setting up a stereo system with 4 passive speakers. If I use this amp - Lepai LP-269FS - will I be able to also connect an active subwoofer through the Line Out channel on the leftmost side? If not, is there another possibility to add a subwoofer to this system.

send fx insert to an output in Reaper ?

Hello,

I have a very simple setup in cubase and try to reproduce it in Reaper, but I can´t figure this out.

Can anybody give it look and help me out please?

Cubase runs a plugin called livemachine. It is a looper and it is loaded as a insert FX on an audiotrack.

It has builtin effects that you can trigger over midi so i use a second track, a miditrack this time with my midikeyboard as input and the insert FX from the audiotrack as output.

I don´t know how I have to send the insert FX in Reaper to the output of the miditrack. Is it even possible ?

Thanx in advance

An opinion on bancing a studio with analog and digital hardware and software.

The last couple years I have seen electronic musicians in Japan and in other countries divide into two general camps, Camp Analog and Camp Everything. I have followed the debates here and on other sites and took great advice from a lot of far better informed people. So I thought I would like to share what I ended up with and maybe it will help others decide and find a great balance too.

Our considerations were.

1. Provide our studio with good sounding gear for classic electronic music genres, sound tracks, ethnic fusion, atmospheric/ambient and etherial music.

2. Provide gear that can be used live for our performances but is light enough to bring by train. (no car for us in Tokyo)

3. Keep it affordable (we are by no means rich. so every unit has to be useful and affordable) and we decided that buying as much of it second hand as possible was both ecological and cost saving.

4. Has to fit in a Tokyo sized bedroom, so small and limited space.

5. Have both Analog and Digital sounds and feeling available.

So here goes.

Digital Synths

Virus TI Desktop - (used) My go to for pads, atmospheres some arps. It is a versatile classic and will probably always be here even though we use it for limited reasons.

Waldorf Blofeld (1key+1desktop) - (One new one used.) So affordable in Japan second hand. We use it for just about everything since it is so flexible. Using one with my own patches and one factory/update patches when I just want something quick. The keyboard is heavy so in many ways I wish we had gone with a second desktop since we never take it to shows unless we are driven.(which is very rare)

Nord Lead 4 - (new) My baby. I love just playing this synth. It sounds great, it is fun to play. I use it for live since it looks great and is light to carry. It does vintage sounds great. Tied into a Strymon BigSky it rivals the Virus for pads. And the arps are great.

Novation Ultranova - (New) bought for taking out live. Powerful synth, but I rarely go to it for anything in the studio. But love it for live and it plays as my composition controller most of the time. May not survive in our space if we don't get more out of it.

Analog

Elektron Analog Keys - (pending) We have one on loan for a few week. I basically hate their unintuitive interface, we bought and sold an Octatrack before. But I like the sound and sequencer and many friends here swear by these units. If we buy this one it will be for live primarily for our electronic projects.

Waldorf Pulse 2. (used) Picked up second hand and love it. Why isn't this analog on the top of everyone's affordable list? It can generate very warm bass, wonderful pad and lead sounds. Married to a TC Electronic delay and reverb from our guitars it is magical and it is tiny. This and the Blofeld fit nicely in a guitar FX box along with the pedals and is easy to set up live.

Software

Omnisphere - have had this for years and LOVE IT. For soundtracks, pads and drones for our ethnic fusion work it is great.

Camel Audio Alchemy - Same reason as Ominsphere but for random sounds.

Studio Software = Logic Pro

Mobile Software = Ableton Live Lite - Mostly playing percussion clips or driving clock to our live gear.

So that is our set up. I hope it is interesting to someone considering tools for their system to blend analog, digital and software.

Help with Apogee Ensemble

Hi everyone, I'm new here and wondered if you could help me with something?

I have a home studio - API Lunchbox > Apogee Ensemble (standalone) > Digi 002 > Protools (macbook pro).

This set up has been running fine for ages, until today when my system crashed after a power outtage, and when I re-booted my Apogee ensemble was not 'speaking' to my Protools. The lunchbox is registering a level, the apogee is registering a level on input metering, but not on output metering! And protools is getting nothing from the apogee.

I checked my apogee by connecting it straight to the mac and using it as the audio output controller, and by doing this I got levels through the 1-2 outputs - so I guess there isn't anything 'physically' wrong with them?!? Does anyone have any idea what this could be? It's not registering any levels on the meters when set to output, which is peculiar as it sees the levels going in still.

Any help would be greatly appreciated - I am on a deadline and way behind now!

Thanks a lot.

Need an amp for Monoprice 108250s

I am considering building a sound system with 4 speakers. I want a decent sound in a somewhat large room, but I prefer to use 4 speakers spread around the room rather than 2 more powerful speakers. Mostly so that I can play music on lower sound level but still hear it in every corner of the room.

I am going to use Monoprice 108250 speakers, mostly because of incredible price (30$ a pair), and decent reviews. They are up to 80 watts of power at 8 ohms.

I have never set up a passive system and need your help with recommending me a cheap amp. Most people recommend Lepai LP-2020A+ but the output is 20W, isn't that too low for 80W speakers?

Do you know of any amps for under 100$ (preferably around 50$) that can power 4x80W system?

I might also add a sub-woofer later, if I see I'm lacking bass (probably active). Do I need to consider this right now while picking an amp?

Thanks in advance.

Violins record

Hello

i want to record violins for my album and i want to know what is best to do-

record all players together or each player apart.

I'm recording first+second violin, viola, cello and con bass.

the violin player says she think its best apart because if one of the players make mistake we have to do it from the start and it save time to do apart. also she said i can be more personal with each player about what i want from the sound.

1- what is best for a limited budget?

2- is there a major difference in sound?

3- is it ok to enter midi files to sibelius and give it to the players or i need someone professional to check out the sheet notes?

*sorry for my poor english, i try my best.

thanks !

Recording Vocals/Voice Overs

I own an Oktava mk 319 Large Condenser Microphone, plugged into a Scarlett 2i2, which is then (obviously) plugged into my computer. I record onto Adobe Audition.

Basically I run a gaming channel where me and my friends record us playing games and talking over it. It's more of a podcast where we talk about events and random stuff and then sometimes the game. But when I record, it barely picks up audio, but when we laugh, i can see it start to clip on the screen (in Audition.) It's like the range or window is very small. The microphone is about 3 feet or so in front of us, at about the same level as our mouths when we're sitting on the couch.

I don't know much about audio and recording. But it's rather annoying and I don't think I'm setting something up correctly. I know sometimes me and my friends have quieter voices but there isn't a real good medium. The gain knob on my scarlett is almost all the way up. It's really, I mean REALLY touchy.

I basically just want equal levels of our voices. For when we're loud and not so loud. Is there an effect or filter in Audition to level it out? I know most of that will come to editing, but it's nearly impossible to laugh or get excited and start talking a little louder without clipping the audio. Or should I maybe invest in 2 boom Microphones and set them closer to the subjects?

Sorry if I'm not being real clear on what I'm asking, I'm just having a hard time trying to know what to ask :)

Building Studio In Concrete Basement. Need Advice.

Hey Guys,

I am planning on a Project Studio build in an 18 x 19 Ft basement. Three walls are solid concrete and the last wall has an open staircase going upstairs to my home.

The ceilings are exposed joists with builders grade R-19 insulation.

My plan for the ceiling is to stuff Safe N Sound noise isolation insulation in between the floor joists then sheetrock with resilient channel. I would also like to build a wall across the open staircase with the same insulation, resilient channels and sheetrock.

The dilema is what do I do to the solid concrete walls. Do I just frame out walls against the concrete, use basic R-value insulation and sheetrock or should I use resilient channels on the studs for the concrete walls also?

I am not concerned with any sound escaping or coming in through solid concrete, that is underground but the concern is bass frequencies traveling up those walls.

Any suggestions to anything I mentioned would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Danny

Setting Reverb in Pro Tools - HELP!

Hello, everyone! I've read several threads on the subject, but it was not yet clear to me, I would like someone to help me on the following questions:

1 - What is the best way to create a mono in/stereo out reverb? Creating a mono auxiliary and adding a stereo reverb (mono to stereo) or already creating a stereo auxiliary and sending (send) only one side of the instrument or voice (L or R) instead of stereo send?

2 - How to add a reverb to the delay return? Creating send (from delay) for a reverb aux?

3 - Some explanation because many engineers like to use mono instead of stereo send?

4 - Mono send is also common with dual mono delays?

Cheers!

Seeking Advice on MacBook Pro usability 2011 vs 2014

Hi there,

I'm tossing up between buying a MBPro 15" late 2011 SandyBridge or a more modern Ivy Bridge or Haswell Machine.

I can save $1K by going for the older machine.

The 2011 model I'm looking at is pre retina.. i7 2.5kHz. I can max the RAM out to 16Gb. It already has a 500gb SSD.

I want to run 2 ext displays and will be using Pro Tools 11 with Kontakt and sample libraries for midi composition to picture.

I like the idea of replacing the optical DVD drive for another SSD.

The main concerns about the 2011 machine are..

1. Will I run into trouble with the second external display? I will need to use USB converter and I'm concerned lag will be a problem.

2. Is a Sandy Bridge i7 2.5kHz going to be sufficient power for the things I need it for? ie.. running quite a few sample libraries and plugs,etc..

3. What bottlenecks am I likely to face vs a newer machine?

Any advice/experience is much appreciated.

Adam

Now with full setup, want to name my studio. Is it bad idea to name similar to band?

Hey guys,

So for a bit of a while I have been recording on my own, and now I want to take things a bit more seriously. I don't have any recordings online yet but will be working on bands site, as well as the studio's site, where I will start uploading tracks and stuff.

Anyways, the question is. My band is called "The Lilt". I like the name. Is it a bad idea to name the studio similar to the band? I love the name, but then I feel it may create an impression of being less legit if some of the samples are from a band of the same name.

Let me know what you guys think.a

profire 2626 and summing question?

Hello. Ive been wanting to buy a summing mixer for the past couple years. Right now I have a black lion audio sparrow a/d converter with world clock connected to my profire 2626. Im using the sparrows a/d converter and world clock as a master and using the profires d/a converter.

The profire has 8 analog outs.

I want to get a summing mixer that has 16 channels. I was thinking about a getting a better external 16 channel d/a converter with my setup. Someone posted that the profire can only accept 16 external analog outs and that it can only do 44/48k, is this true?

I thought that if you buy an external da converter you can use it with the profire no matter how many channel it has. For example 2 analog in and 32 analog outs. I also thought the external da converter will handle the sample rate? Im confused. Please help.

Deciding between Sub 37 and Pro 2

I am about to decide on my first hardware synth and I was hoping for some additional feedback. A little background: Each of these synths appeal to me for different reasons, the price differential is a non issue, and I am clearly not an analog purist. I really like the Moog because of it's immediacy and intuitive design. The Pro 2 on the other hand appeals to me as a controller keyboard and for it's ability to play four note chords. I would love some advice from people who have experience with either of these instruments.

Thanks!

Bob Dylan "shelter from the storm" reverb

I'm pretty sure the beautiful reverb on his voice in this track (on the album) is probably just an awesome room. For the rest of us mere mortals, can someone give me an idea of what kind of settings might be used to achieve a similar effect? I know the dynamics of his voice are causing it to kick in more at times than others, I just love the reverb on 60s/70s folk tunes like this one. Whenever I try to dial in a nice reverb on the vocals on my own tracks it always seems overpowering.

I have ableton (and its built in reverbs) but I am open to suggestions about other plugins or techniques folks have used to get some classic reverb.

Here's a YouTube link for folks who might not have it (sad quality at 480p, I know!):

Personal Mixer setup with no direct outs

Hello everyone. This is my first post so please bear with me.

I'm considering purchasing the Behringer Powerplay Personal Monitor system, but I need to make sure it'll work for my setup. I have an Allen & Heath ZED 22fx mixer. Unfortunately, it doesn't have direct outs so I'm trying to find the best solution to connect the Behringer P-16i Input Module. I've read about using the Inserts on the ZED 22 as direct outs by modifying TRS/TS cables, but it seems like this isn't an ideal solution because of unbalanced connections. I'm not even sure if that's true. So the solution I thought of would be to set up the P-16i Input Module at the FOH and run all the instruments/mics into it. I have a few instruments that each have Direct Boxes which have a Thru port so they can easily plug into the P-16i, but I'm trying to figure out what to do for the microphones.

Currently, I have 8 mics at the FOH that are running into an analog snake that plugs into the mixer in the back. My idea was to run the 8 mics into a Preamp before running them into the snake. The various Preamps I'm looking at all have simultaneous analog/digital outputs. The plan is to use the analog outputs on the preamp to go into the snake and use the ADAT output to go into the P-16i unit. Will this solution actually work or am I missing something? I also saw mic/xlr splitters but would a preamp provide a better solution?

If this actually does work, which preamp would you suggest I purchase? Currently this entire setup is in a small venue so I'm not too sure if there will be major gains in buying a more expensive preamp. This is an additional purchase I wasn't anticipating so I'm trying to keep the cost under $500.

$199 - Behringer Ada8200

$399 - PreSonus DigiMAX D8

$499 - Focusrite OctoPre Mk II

Thank you in advance for your help. It's much appreciated.

4 Wall designs… Which is more effective?

I am trying to decide which wall construction would have better isolation performance for the interior wall of my studio. This second wall is on a floating slab. My exterior wall is already finished.

This is what I am deciding between.

1. 1 layer of 3/4 inch OSB (recommended by builder for sheer strength), Green Glue, 1 Layer of 5/8th Sheetrock.

Or

2. 2 Layers of 5/8th sheetrock with Green Glue.

Or

3. 3 Layers of 5/8th sheetrock.

Or

4. 1 Layer of OSB and 2 layers of 5/8th sheetrock.

According to this PDF on Green Glue, it appears that either #1 or #2 would be most effective. But of course, this is coming from them.

Any suggestions?

Amp hookup

Our main installation has lost an amp, a Crown XLS-1500. Got a replacement, a Crown XLS-2500. Works great, lighter and smaller.

Lost another amp, a VERY old Peavey, 1/4" in and out.

Bought a new Crown XLS-2500, was going to move one of the remaining three Crown XLS-1500's to the Peavey slot and install the 2500 as a 1500 replacement....but, no.

Not sure why it's wired like this (I didn't do it), other than lack of inputs, but the XLR input to the 1500...directly above it is a set of small screw terminals. This one has wires connected. Traced them out, they go up the rack to a Rane Graphic EQ, then back down to another main XLS-1500 input.

Since the 2500 has no such screw terminals, and because of a time constraint limiting my time in the rack, I did not feel like searching for proper length shielded 1/4" to 1/4" cables.

Anybody ever seen this before?

All I can figure is they wanted to equalize one input to the second amp.

Thanks.

Daqve

Open up KRK Rokit 5 RPG2?

I am trying to get inside of a KRK Rokit 5 RPG2 to check the capacitors.

On the back there are a number of screws. Removing all there screws on perimeter makes no difference the back plate is still very solid and in place.

The front has some allen bolts which when removed give u access to the tweeter, but also give u access to more scores around the woofer. Removing the woofer screws does nothing. Now I am at a loss with a pile of screws and still no way in! Am I screwed?

Is this back plate glued down somehow? This speaker emits a low low freq upon powering on and then immediately goes down to a quieter hum interspersed with some crackling here and there. Im hoping its just a cap or a bad solder joint - but I need to get in to see!

Advice on taking this thing apart? Info online says earlier versions just come off with the screws on back...but I am not finding that possible with this version.

Ciao from Italy!!!

Hi everybody!! My name's Paolo and I'm writing from Venezia, Italy.

Since I'm new to this kind of communication, I hope you'll forgive me if I won't be 100% accurate, also because my English is not quite fluent...

I was born in 1962, and since I was a kid I have always been fond of electronics, physics and music, so as I started getting older, I have been trying to build my own stuff (loudspeakers, amplifiers, etc...).

During the past couple of years, I've been involved in live audio recordings, so I took the decision to "grow up" and bought "serious" hi-end equipment - Horus and Hapi from Merging Technologies. In order to give even more "consolidated" grounds to my choice, and have the possibility to exchange opinions with experts, I decided to join this forum, Which I've been reading for quite a long time, therefore... Here I am!!!

Let me thank you in advance for all the answers you'll be able to provide to the questions I'll ask...

Buona serata!!!
