Want a simpler setup= -PTHD3 +apollo/Ensemble?

I really want to go minimalist on my gear so I want to get rid of all the PTHD cards/units and go with a single Apollo Quad/Logic set up....The Apollo is the perfect box for every combination I want to do except the drum kit is 6 channels....I REALLY DON'T want to have to get a second box for 2 more preamp channels, so I'm thinking I can use the 4 preamp channels for 2 overheads, kick and snare...The 2 toms have a shure sm57 and beta 52a so can I just pop a XLR to 1/4 inch adapter on them and call it a day or will I just not get the signal I need for the punch?....The new Apogee Ensemble would take care of the preamp problem but my MP doesn't have Thunderbolt plus I'd like to stick with some outboard processing since I'd be getting rid of the HD3 cards.....Not sure my MidiIO will still work when I upgrade to Yosemite either....Any ideas?....moon
