I've got an old MXR rack EQ which sounds great for bass and guitar (almost like a clean boost) when used in front of the amp. The trouble is it hums. At first I though it was a ground issue with the plug but it's already had the center pin removed so whoever had it before me thought the same thing would help.
I have also tried running it attached to a Hum X plug and that does not work.
Some friends of mine are electrical engineers so I am going to ask them to look at it, but they have no experience with music gear. What components should they check out first?
What are the usual suspects when dealing with hum? I've tried it in a different house and removed localized ground/noise issues that could cause noise and hum but none of it helped.
Any pointers on what to failing components are more likely to result in hum to test/swap out etc would be appreciated.

I already have the pedal versions of this vintage era MXR (a 10 and 6 band) and they are fantastic. I'd love to get this up and running/behaving.
