A heavyweight matchup between Alistair Overeem (37-13 MMA, 2-2 UFC) and Ben Rothwell (33-9 MMA, 3-3 UFC) is the latest addition to September’s UFC Fight Night 50 event.
MMAjunkie confirmed the booking following an initial report from FOXSports.com.
UFC Fight Night 50 takes place Sept. 5 at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Ledyard, Conn. It’s a rare Friday night show for the UFC – and falls on the same night as Bellator 123 in nearby Uncasville, less than 10 miles away. The bulk of the UFC Fight Night 50 card is expected to air on FOX Sports 1 following a few prelims on UFC Fight Pass.
Overeem looks to build on the strength of a February win over Frank Mir at UFC 169. After the victory, Overeem called for a rematch with Brock Lesnar. The contest never materialized, and Overeem elected to undergo surgery and now fights following seven months on the sidelines.
Meanwhile, Rothwell fights for the first time since an August 2013 victory over Brandon Vera. After the fight, Rothwell tested positive for elevated levels of testosterone and was suspended nine months by the UFC. In his return, Rothwell will seek his first two-fight winning streak since 2007 and his first ever such run in the UFC.
