The UFC light heavyweight championship bout between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier may have been postponed, but don’t expect contender Alexander Gustafsson to take a fight for the purpose of staying busy in the interim.

Gustafsson’s manager, Manos Terzitane, told “UFC Tonight” that the Swedish fighter believes he should take Cormier’s place against Jones at UFC 182 on Jan. 3. “The Mauler” was originally slated to face Jones at UFC 178 before withdrawing to undergo knee surgery. Cormier then stepped in to take his place.

On Tuesday, it was announced that Jones had pulled out of the Sept. 27 fight after tearing his meniscus in training. “Bones” will undergo surgery on Thursday.

Barring injury, it doesn’t appear that Gustafsson will get his wish, especially in light of the hype generated by the brawl between Jones and Cormier at a recent media day event. However, Terzitane told UFC Tonight that Gustafsson will not take any fight other than Jones in the meantime. Of course, that could change if Cormier captures that title.

Gustafsson gave Jones the toughest test of his career at UFC 165, dropping a hard-fought decision that many observers felt he won. The Alliance MMA standout returned to the Octagon in March, where he stopped Jimi Manuwa in the second round at UFC Fight Night in London.
