The UFC’s return to Sweden now has its co-headliner, and it features a recent featherweight title challenger, as well as a local product.
UFC officials today announced Chan Sung Jung (13-4 MMA, 3-1 UFC), who fights for the first time since an August 2013 loss to champion Jose Aldo, will clash with Swedish fighter Akira Corassani (12-4 MMA, 3-1 UFC)
UFC Fight Night 53 takes place Oct. 4 at Ericsson Globe in Stockholm. The event streams on UFC Fight Pass.
Jung, who’s ranked No. 9 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA featherweight rankings, was on a three-fight winning streak before the TKO loss to Aldo. Prior to the title defeat, in which Jung suffered a shoulder injury, the 27-year-old “Korean Zombie” had defeated Leonard Garcia, Mark Hominick and Dustin Poirier – all via stoppage and all in bonus-winning performances.
The WEC and World Victory Road/Sengoku vet now meets Corassani, who also recently was on a three-fight UFC winning streak. However, in his most recent performance, the 31-year-old “TUF 14″ semifinalist suffered a TKO loss to Poirier at the TUF Nations Finale in April. Despite the defeat, Corassani earned “Fight of the Night” honors and picked up his first UFC fight-night bonus.
