Mark Hunt Over Heavyweight Limit By 20 Pounds :/

HUNT HAS 24 HOURS TO CUT 20 POUNDS

Image

Top UFC heavyweight slugger, Mark Hunt is set to face Roy Nelson in this weekend’s UFC Fight Night 52 main event.

According to reports, that bout could be in jeopardy as the “Super Samoan” is well over the heavyweight limit of 265 pounds.

Yahoo Sports! has the scoop:

Hunt, who said he began his training camp at an astounding 340 pounds, weighed 284 on Thursday in Japan, a UFC source confirmed to Yahoo Sports. That means that by the 4 p.m. Tokyo time weigh-in, Hunt will have to shed an additional 19 pounds to make the heavyweight limit of 265 for his bout at the Saitama Super Arena against Roy “Big Country” Nelson.

It’s almost certain Hunt is going to spend most of his Friday in the sauna trying to shed 19 pounds.

It’s hard to imagine he’ll be able to lose all of that weight. If he misses, then it will be up to Nelson if the fight goes forward. Hunt weighed 262 pounds for his December bout against Antonio “Big Foot” Silva that went down as one of the greatest matches in UFC history.

Junior dos Santos versus Stipe Miocic being discussed for December

Image

It's been nearly a year since the UFC's former heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos fought, but it looks like there could be a time and place for his return.

As reported on UFC Tonight, a fight between Dos Santos and fast-rising heavyweight Stipe Miocic is under consideration for December. Though nothing is set in stone yet, Ariel Helwani reported that a source close to Miocic has informed him that a showdown at the UFC on FOX 13 card is "more than likely." That event takes place on Dec. 13 at the U.S. Airways Center in Phoenix, Arizona.

A source within Dos Santos' camp reportedly said "Cigano" is agreeable to the date, but that he would prefer it be a three-round fight, rather than the five designated for main events.

Dos Santos (16-3) has been out of action since his UFC 166 title bid came up short against current champion Cain Velasquez. He was scheduled to fight Stipe Miocic in May -- originally at UFC 173 on May 24, which was the bumped to May 31 for the TUF Brazil 3 Finale in Sao Paulo, Brazil -- but he had to pull out with a hand injury. He is currently ranked No. 2 on the media-driven UFC rankings.

The 32-year old Miocic is 6-1 in the UFC (12-1 overall), and is riding a three-fight win streak, and is currently No. 4 in the heavyweight rankings. His last victory came at the TUF Brazil 3 Finale against Dos Santos' replacement, Fabio Maldonado. Before then he defeated Gabriel Gonzaga and Roy Nelson. Miocic's only career loss came in 2012 against Stefan Struve in Nottingham, England.

Alistair Overeem vs. Stefan Struve set for UFC on Fox 13

Image

A heavyweight bout between Alistair Overeem and Stefan Struve is set for UFC on Fox 13 on Dec. 13.

The promotion announced the pairing on Wednesday night. UFC on Fox 13 takes place at the U.S. Airways Center in Phoenix and also includes a lightweight clash between Jamie Varner and Drew Dober. The evening’s main draw airs on Fox.

Overeem is 2-3 in the UFC since coming to the Las Vegas-based promotion in 2011. The 34-year-old Dutchman last appeared at UFC Fight Night “Jacare vs. Mousasi 2,” where he suffered a first-round technical knockout loss to Ben Rothwell. Overeem owns victories over Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir in the Octagon.

Struve was scheduled to fight for the first time in more than a year at UFC 175 after being diagnosed with a leaking aortic valve and enlarged heart in August 2013. However, a near-fainting spell backstage prior to his bout with Matt Mitrione resulted in the cancellation of that matchup. Struve last competed at UFC on Fuel TV 8 in March 2013, losing to Mark Hunt via third-round TKO.

Andrei Arlovski regrets harsh comments made about teammate Alistair Overeem

Image

Andrei Arlovski had some heated words for training partner Alistair Overeem last month in an interview with a Russian website. He regrets them now.

"I was kind of emotional," Arlovski told FOX Sports. "I shouldn’t have said anything.

Arlovski told sports.ru about an incident that happened in August when the two heavyweights were sparring. Arlovski said Overeem hit him with a knee that was too hard at Jackson-Winkeljohn MMA in Albuquerque, N.M., and he went to the hospital to see if he had broken any ribs.

"It was so unexpected and so unpleasant that at first I even wanted to take revenge on him, at least hit him with [my] elbow," Arlovski said (translated by Bloody Elbow). "But my boxing coach, Andrei Ivchuk, turned around and reassured me. 'Do not be like the people who allow themselves to such dirty tricks,' he said. 'No need to stoop to their level.'"

Arlovski said he initially thought he might have to pull out of his main event fight against Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva at UFC Fight Night on Fight Pass on Saturday in Brasilia, Brazil. UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones was also injured while training with Overeem and had to withdraw from his UFC 178 main event against Daniel Cormier.

"Now I know that Overeem injured Jon Jones simply because he injures everyone with whom [he] trains," Arlovski told the website.

After the remarks got out, Arlovski said he had a discussion with coach Greg Jackson. He and Overeem have now buried the hatchet. Overeem posted a photo of him with his arm around Arlovski's neck on Instagram three weeks ago.

Image

"Sometimes amazing how media twist and turns things," Overeem wrote. "For ratings unfortunately I suppose. But rest assured, me and AA go hard inside the gym! To better each other."

Arlovski said he has never had any personal issues with Overeem since the former Strikeforce heavyweight champion has been training at Jackson's, beginning in June. He was just emotional after getting hurt and spouted off about it.

"He's very nice, very respectful," Arlovski said. "I think he's a good guy."

Eddie Alvarez defends teammate Thiago Silva: 'He got dealt a bad hand'

Image

Eddie Alvarez thinks the UFC made the right move re-signing Thiago Silva.

Silva, Alvarez's Blackzilians teammate, was arrested in February on charges of aggravated assault and battery, sending threatening texts and aggravated assault and resisting arrest without violence following an incident with his estranged wife, Thayse Kamiji, outside of a Brazilian jiu-jitsu school in South Florida.

The charges were dropped two weeks ago because Kamiji has left the country and will not cooperate with authorities. The UFC worked quickly to bring him back into the fold. Silva denies the allegations.

Alvarez wrote:

"He was run through the ringer. Every once in awhile we all get a bad hand dealt to us. He got a bad hand dealt to him. He went through it and came out unstained and successful. Why not [re-sign him]?"

The initial accusations from Kamiji were very serious. Kamiji told cops that Silva, on separate occasions, put a gun inside her mouth, sent her threatening texts and followed her to Pablo Popovitch's gym with a gun, threatening her and Popovitch, a jiu-jitsu coach. Kamiji and Popovitch are romantically involved. Silva and Kamiji have been separated since December 2012.

Silva was initially held without bond and issued an immigration hold, which was later removed. He spent several weeks in jail before being released on $25,000 bond in March. After that, he was forced to wear an ankle monitor.

Silva, 31, said last week on "The MMA Hour" that Kamiji wanted a divorce and was trying to get money out of him.

Silva wrote:

"I never pointed any gun at my ex-wife, I never tried to hurt [her]. Everything she said was a lie. So, that's the truth."

In February, UFC president Dana White said Silva would never fight again in the UFC, especially after he was involved in a standoff with police. But White admitted he spoke too soon.

Dana White wrote:

"If you take his side of the story, her side of the story, the truth lies somewhere in the middle, but he went through the process and he wasn't charged with anything. The guy should have the ability to make a living."

Alvarez agrees and believes Silva, who he calls a good teammate and extremely helpful to have around the Boca Raton gym. The Blackzilians camp also includes UFC stars like Rashad Evans, Vitor Belfort and Anthony Johnson.

Alvarez wrote:

"He's a hell of a guy. It doesn’t shock me that things went the way they went, that he came out unscathed."

Silva, a native of Brazil, holds a 16-3 pro MMA record with two no contests, stemming from a failed drug test (marijuana) and a falsified urine sample. He is currently on a two-fight winning streak and was scheduled to compete at UFC 171 in March. Silva has not fought since last October, a unanimous decision win over Matt Hamill.

Silva wrote:

"People will forget about the incident. They always do"

Lyoto Machida Draws CB Dollaway for Next Bout

Lyoto Machida Draws CB Dollaway for Next Bout

Image VS Image

After failing to capture the UFC middleweight championship, Lyoto Machida has agreed to return to the Octagon on Dec. 20 in Brazil.

UFC officials on Wednesday announced that Machida would return to face CB Dollaway in Barueri in the state of Sao

Paulo.

Machida (21-5) lost a unanimous decision to champion Chris Weidman at UFC 175 on July 5, derailing the former UFC light heavyweight champion’s hopes of becoming a two-division champion in the Octagon.

The loss came after back-to-back victories over Gegard Mousasi and Mark Munoz to launch his move to 185 pounds.

Dollaway (15-5) is on the other end of the spectrum. He has won his last two bouts, over Francis Carmont and Cezar Ferreira.

If he is able to add Machida’s name to his resume, Dollaway would launch himself into the upper echelon of middleweights trying to earn a shot at Weidman.

Francis Carmont released by UFC

Image

Francis Carmont's UFC run has come to an end for now.

The Frenchman announced on his Facebook page that he is no longer in the UFC after a record of 6-3 inside the Octagon as a middleweight.

I announce that after 6 win and 3 defeat, I am no longer a UFC fighter. However it is with determination that I will continue my career in combat sports. A friend told me, after my loss against Thales, " You will come to understand it is the best thing that could've happen for your career, it'll make you stronger." At that moment i did not quiet understand, and after reflecting i came to auto-criticize myself. I come to the conclusion that in sports just like in life, there are many and different stages. By looking for perfection on my technique, i slowly estrange myself from the combat by instinct. Seeking to score points instead of finishing my opponent. My last loss pushes me to grow everyday. Life is a learning path and my career is far from finish. Thank you very much for your constant support.

Carmont, who trains out of the Tristar Gym in Montreal and has often been cornered by his good friend Georges St-Pierre, won his first six UFC fights, defeating Chris Camozzi, Magnus Cedenblad, Karlos Vemola, Tom Lawlor, Lorenz Larkin and Costas Philippou. However, he has since been stuck in a three-fight losing streak, most recently getting knocked out by Thales Leites last month after losses to Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza and C.B. Dollaway.

In fact, this current three-fight losing skid snapped an 11-fight winning streak for the 32-year-old Carmont. As he mentioned in his Facebook post, he plans on continuing his MMA career outside of the UFC.

Ronda Rousey rips Cris Cyborg: ‘The best she has isn’t good enough, even on drugs’

Image

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Ronda Rousey has strong words for Cris Cyborg.

The UFC bantamweight champion spoke to the Brazilian media on Tuesday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and attacked the Invicta FC’s featherweight champion. According to Rousey, Cyborg, who is expected to make her 135-pound debut later this year, asked to be released from her UFC contract to avoid random drug testing.

"I would fight her, but 24 hours after the announcement of out-of-competition drug testing, she asked to be released from the UFC," Rousey said. "I’m under contract with the UFC, I can’t leave. She can come back whenever she wants, I’m here."

Cyborg went 2-0 in MMA after the last bout under the Strikeforce banner, and recently competed in a muay thai title fight against Jorina Baars, losing via decision.

"She was fighting, it was a while ago, and she just got dropped five times in a match. And really, to be honest, I haven’t been really too impressed with her actual skill set," Rousey said. "It’s only her strength that she draws off.

"If you remember when she fought Gina (Carano), she pulled her into mount two different times. Those are very grievous technical mistakes. The mistakes that she makes technically are absolutely terrible and basic. The only reason why she gets away with it is because of her strength, and people don’t realize how strong I actually am. Ask the girls that I’ve fought. They weren’t expecting this. Because I don’t look like it, it doesn’t mean I don’t have it.

"She doesn’t have any feeling in her punches, she pushes her punches. She can’t knock people out with one punch, she just overwhelms them," she added. "My pace, nobody can overwhelm me. And the way that she is on the ground, it’s absolute horrendous. And her distance is absolute horrendous. The only thing that she has is pace and power, and I have pace, precision and power."

Cyborg might lose some of her power when dropping down to 135 pounds, but Rousey doesn’t think she would become an easy match-up. However, Rousey thinks doping is the reason why the Brazilian is taking so long to cut down.

"I think that everybody has something, and I think that she would still be a great competitor at 135, but I think that she knows that it would be much harder for her to get away with doping and to make weight at 135," she said. "That’s why she resisted for so long. But then when she saw she had no other options, she started cutting down.

"But she’s still outside the organization, going outside the country. I’m sure she’s trying to dope as long as possible and then come into the UFC. But it doesn’t matter. I grew up fighting in judo and I knew there were people out there doping, but I never used that as an excuse to do it. I just wanted to beat them despite of it. ‘You know what, you can have every advantage in the world over me, you can have better funding, you can have a better program, be on all the drugs in the world, but I’m gonna be good enough to beat you despite of it.'

"The reason why people dope is because they lack self-confidence. The reason why she was using steroids is because that girl does not believe that the best that she has is good enough, and that will always be there in her mind. And you know what, she’s right. The best that she has isn’t good enough, even on drugs."

Raphael Assuncao gives UFC an ultimatum

Image

Riding the longest bantamweight winning streak under the UFC banner, Raphael Assuncao is tired of waiting.

Assuncao couldn’t get his title shot at UFC 173 in May due to a rib injury. T.J. Dillashaw not only took his spot, but also dethroned Renan Barao with a fifth-round TKO. The UFC opted to schedule an immediate rematch between Dillashaw and Barao for UFC 177, leaving Assuncao out one once again.

Unbeaten over the past six bouts, including a split decision victory over Dillashaw in 2013, Assuncao takes on Bryan Caraway at UFC Fight Night 54 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on Oct. 4, and the Brazilian is already thinking ahead.

"This fight is really important for me, and I’m taking it very seriously," Assuncao told MMAFighting.com. "Some people think I’m taking him lightly because it’s not a title fight, but I’m extremely focused. I know Caraway is a good fighter, but I’m already thinking ahead. Everything I do is planned. I’m not underestimating Caraway. I’m already making plans, but I’m focused on this guy."

Barao ended up removed from the UFC 177 after he fainted while attempting to cut weight the day before the fight, and UFC newcomer Joe Soto replaced him against Dillashaw.

"To begin with, that should have been my fight. The UFC knows that, everybody knows that," Assuncao said. "I’m not getting any younger, so this is my time. I’m feeling physically better, more mature, so things are getting together.

"I give Joe Soto some credit for taking the fight, but he didn’t do anything in the fight," he continued. "He was throwing some overhands, but not doing much. He had no planned attacks, no game plan. With all due respect to Joe Soto, he took the fight on short notice, but he didn’t do anything at all."

Assuncao was never contacted about the possibility of replacing Barao at UFC 177, and he wouldn’t have been able to take the fight.

"Nobody called me," he said. "They know I wouldn’t have been able to make weight. I’m short, but I have some weight to cut. I was around 155 pounds that day, so I wouldn’t be able to cut to fight at 135. Maybe I would have taken a catchweight, but the title wouldn’t be on the line."

Dillashaw improved to 3-0 since losing to Assuncao in Brazil in November, but Assuncao hasn’t seen any improvement from the Team Alpha Male product.

"T.J. did (against Soto) exactly what he did against Barao and me. He hasn’t changed a bit in his game," he said. "Maybe he has a better cardio now, changed his movement a bit, but it’s the same thing in terms of fighting."

"It really bothers me," Assuncao said of seeing a guy he beat 11 months ago hold the UFC title. "It bothers me, and he keeps talking a lot. I think he wants to give himself some confidence by talking. He made fun of Barao, too. He was disrespectful, but it won’t work against me.

"I live in the United States for years. No one has to translate anything for me. If he says something to me, I’ll be looking right into his eyes. When I fought him, he said some things before the fight, but when we met in Sao Paulo he had no idea what to do. Deep in there, T.J. knows it will be different when he fights me. His game won’t work against me, and he knows that."

Former UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz will return to the Octagon for his first bout since Oct. 1, 2011, and he will be riding a 11-fight win streak should he beat Takeya Mizugaki at UFC 178 on Sept. 27. Can "The Dominator" leapfrog Assuncao for a shot against Dillashaw next?

"I’d be really upset if that happens," the Brazilian said. "It might happen because he works for the TV and he uses that to promote himself. Dominick Cruz is my friend, we had a few beers together in the past, but you can’t deny what I have done in the UFC. He hasn’t fought in a while.

"I will let the UFC know that I won’t accept any other fight but a title fight after I beat Caraway. I’m not interested in any other fight, and I won’t fight anyone else."
