I recently picked up an SP-606 as the centerpiece of my stripped-down computerless setup. Not interested in having a computer or ipad in the studio for the time being.
Setup right now is just the SP-606, Ultranova, and a Beatstep sequencing my Fatman. I'm well covered for what I'm doing for synth sounds and samples.
I like that it's a very simple machine and I understand how all its features work.
A couple things about the 606 are driving me crazy though.
1. Can't sequence external gear, but I've somewhat gotten around this by adding the Beatstep.
2. Can't sample a set length of time. So if I want to record a one bar sequence from one of my synths I have to punch in and out manually and then edit the loop points, etc. It's doable but pretty obnoxious when doing it a bunch of times.
3. Can't hear playback while sampling. So there's no way to hear what I've got while recording a synth part over it. Haven't figured out any way around this.
4. I didn't realize how limiting 8 voices of polyphony was until voices started dropping out with just drums, bass, and pad.
Other than these things I'm happy with it and really enjoy some of the limitations and how simple it is.
I'm debating if I should just stick with it and learn to work around the limitations, or if there's something similar out there that wouldn't have these issues.
I'm kind of considering getting rid of the SP and the Ultranova and getting an OP-1.

Should I stick with the SP-606?
