RE: the "UKWA-MOD" for the ART MPA GOLD (a variation of this mod can work on many other pieces of both low and high end gear)…
Listen, I know this sounds kind of…. er… troll-y… but i'm 100% sincere. I present it here as an example of the funny little things (perhaps placebos) that can save/help/conquer a session… or at least make you feel like YOU are in charge of the gear, not the other way around.
I have considerable experience in professional studios. I've owned one, recorded in dozens… I've scaled down to a (mostly)private overdub/mix room now.. but I own fantastic outboard… i ALSO have a deep love/fondness for "lowend" beginner stuff. Love it. Nothing is more annoying than a disconnected engineer looking down on cheap gear… The hammer is 98% irrelevant, it's the arm swinging it that makes the difference.
But to the point of my thread… I'm tracking a ribbon mic through an ART MPA GOLD recently… (gotta crank everything pretty much all the way up to get signal, but once there it's totally cool and usable)… sounds great actually… feeling very smug about how down to earth and "real" i keep things diddlydoo
BUT… i'm staring at the goofy "tube warmth" meter smack between the VU meters… and just annoyed by it. hittt
So, inspired by the piece of electrical tape i'd put over the phantom power button to keep me from accidentally frying the ribbon mic… I pulled a piece off the roll and covered up the stupid tube warmth meter. It was mostly a joke, but surprisingly… and seriously… where before I would only pull the thing out if I NEEDED a spare preamp or two… I put it on stuff where I would have passed before. Maybe this just means I have issues… but hey, there must be some of you out there who find these "dumb" tricks that actually work. In any respect, it was the cheapest mod I've done in a long time. Also, and again totally sincerely… a piece of f#@*ing tape allowed me to get over my petty annoyance (visual i might add) and now that it's there… and the meters don't jump out and make me want to toss the piece in the toy pile… I use it more. 2" of tape… on the tube warmth meters…
Yes, you just read this whole post through to discover my mod is a 2" piece of tape slapped on the front… a lesson in whatever works. hidz
Cheers,
-UKWA
Never let the gear you have (or do not have) be an excuse for engineering skills.
