Options in Dongle safety

For some software that uses a proprietary dongle, you have no choice.



But some use electronic licenses that go onto a usb flash drive. But these flash drives can be physically fragile, or fail internally



Put it on a hard drive? At least that way it's safely inside your computer, away from physical damage. Yeah, but if your hard drive crashes your license is toast.



What today is the most reliable storage method for these licenses? Especially for users that do not need the portability of flash drives?
