Cheap/lo-fi x0x-style sampler/sequencer?

I'm looking for a simple little groove box that has a x0x style sequencer and allows you to easily sample sounds with a built in mic.

I like the quick sampling of the Casio sk-5/1 or Yamaha vss30, now I just want a box that can do that but also has a built in x0x sequencer.

I know the octatrack is technically this but that's not what I want. I'm looking for something mindless and fun. It must have an onboard mic so I can just hit a button and shout things into it, then sequence and alter those samples. The less features it has the better. Also the more lo-fi the better.

I'm looking for something hopefully under 300$. Does anything like this exist?

An extension of the musician

Years ago when I started making music, the musicians I followed would always speak about how their instrument was an extension of themselves. I'm a guitar player, so I'm talking about guys like Duane Allman with his Les Paul, Jimmy with his strat, etc...

I've seen other musicians approach their instruments in much the same way. Jimmy Smith with the B3, Bernie Worell with the Moog...

What about you? What instrument, do you feel, is an extension of you?

Help with DIY Trans/Op amp/Trans preamp design

Hello, I'm in the process of trying to design my first preamp

I'd like to use Jensen JE 16-a input transformer with either a 2520 or NE 80100 op-amp, probably with a JE 11SS-EL output transformer. Is this a stupid design or could I make this work?

I want to know how to make my guitar sound similar if not same as this guitar. I've been trying to emluate it with RealLPC, I want to know what effects are being used on it. If someone could explain to me how to achieve this sound. You can find the guitar in these songs.

NYE Blackmagic Purchase

Running out 2014 and looking to spend a few bucks... finally making the jump up to PT11 and will subsequently have to retire some ancient (yet honorable) Avid Mojos. Blackmagic Intensity Pro seems to be common... but if I'm correct don't have video ref? Seems one needs to spend another $400 to jump up to the DeckLink Studio model for that. Anyone have any thoughts on use/necessity?

Roland MC500 mk1 Sound Module Compatibility?

Hi all!

First post here. I've recently got my hands on a Roland MC500 sequencer in good working order. I've got a functional midi keyboard to go along with it although it is not equipped with a midi sound module. The last piece to the puzzle!

Does anybody know what is compatible with the MC500 or will any sound module work? I guess what I'm asking is what have I got for options? I haven't got much invested into it so I don't intend on spending hundreds. :synth:

DB25 Dsub mult

Hi all!

Im rethinking my studio wiring set up (for headphones mixes), my studio has two plates in the live room and one in the ISO.

Live plates have 8 balanced lines which i use in stereo pairs (Balanced L&R) and make the mix ITB.

My Idea is to use those 8 balanced lines as individual channels for each musician controls their own mix. (Ch1-2 Drums, Ch3 Bass, Ch4 GT1, etc)

I was planning to solder DB25 connector on those plates but i will need to Mult / Split the signal at least 1X6... so my question is:

-Is it OK to build a passive splitter (parallel wiring)?

Ill be using small active mixers for each musician (Phonic Am105 or similar) or each mixer would affect th others?

It would be too expensive to use transformers.

Thanks !!

VST similar to Eventide Ultrachannel

Hi,

I'm testing demo version of Eventidde Ultrachannel vst plugin and it seems easy to use and gives good results. Unfortunatelly I missed summer eventide giveaway and I have to pay full price (~250 usd).

Therefore, before buying it, I would like to know if there are other / better channel strip alternatives in similar price range or cheaper ?

I use Cubase Artist, but I'm a complete newbie and can not get similar results with the use of stock plug-ins. Therefore collection of useful presets is a big advantage.

I'll be grateful for any suggestions.

Drum Micing Phase

So this is a question for guys making heavy rock music WITHOUT samples.

When you mic up a kit, are you able to get all the mics in phase with each other? and by that, I mean, not only are the close mics in phase with the overheads, but are you able to get the snare bleed in the tom mics in phase, or at least supporting the snare?

Or do you just say screw it and strip out the tom bleed?

I find that about 95% of the time I have to gate toms to get rid of snare bleed that would otherwise hurt my snare sound.

Recently I switched to an xy set above center of the kit, and by careful positioning of all the toms about the same vertical height, and moving them slightly closer and farther away from each other, i was able to get all the mics to support each other with no cancelation. It was glorious. However, I realize it's unlikely a drummer will be willing to record like this.

I've also noticed that larger toms seem to be more difficult to get this to happen. My theory is that their fundamental frequency will be much lower than the snare, and that lower fundamental frequency will most likely be at a different positive or negative cycle when it reaches the overhead mics.

Anyone else have anything to add to this?

Alchemist v3 VS Waves C6

The Bundle: Avid Mbox Pro + Pro Tools - License/Annual Payment? (2nd time, sorry!)

I started this thread to make sure!

I am looking to have a PC system at a robust state, other than that I am not looking for any other changes and updates.

The way I have had understood this is that they have plans when it comes to the years passing by with the annual payment (e.g. 2014, 2015, 2016).

With this bundle I would be getting the license for version 11 of Pro Tools for free. Would I be able to simply install the version 11 and then leave it at that at first, and then when version 12 is out actually pay for annual payment for the first time to get that version 12 than too (for those 200 bucks)?

What I mean with this is, after having bought the bundle (and having gotten the license for version 11 for free with that) it could take "maybe" two years (from now on) till I pay for the annual payment for the first time (to get version 12 when it is out then too).

What I mean is, that with this bundle I could wait that time, till version 12 out and not even have paid for the annual payment - I may just have paid for the bundle and may have gotten the license for version 11 through this way.

I hope somebody could let me know how it looks like with this!

Greetings!

Passive box to connect 3 stereo outputs to pair of monitors

Hi, I have 3 stereo sound-sources in my home studio:

I want any of their outputs to be connected to one pair of monitors. Preferably using a passive box / audio-interface / controller. Any recommendations?

HD Native card to to thunderbolt chassis question

Hey guys!

thanks in advance for any help you might have, for me....

I have a mac pro 1,1 (2006? i think),, unfortunately, all though it has been a great and stable comp,, it is becoming obsoleted, by all the new software out there......

-----------------------------------

long story short, i am going to need to rely on my macbook pro 15" retina to finish some projects,,, eventually I will be trying to get a new mac pro trash can model, so an expansion chassis is ultimately in my future, if I am going to keep with the HD Native setup,,, which i am also pretty happy with.......

so,,, the question is....

there are several options for an expansion Chassis,, however, only 3 seem to be approved by avid,, basically magma, and sonnet options...

they are a little pricey for me.... but stability is important in the long haul here...

but then I see this:

AKiTiO Thunder2 PCIe Box | PCI Express Expansion Box with Thunderbolt 2 Interface | AKiTiO

and this:

PCIe Card Compatibility Chart | AKiTiO

--------------------

price is pretty nice, and they claim to be compatible,,,, the big problem is,, i cant find anything on avids site to suggest that they are supported... and I have found a couple reviews on the product that were good, and kinda grazed over the fact that they were using them with HD Native,, but nobody really elaborated on there setup....

so, anybody tried this chassis?

good/ bad results?

any suggestions on other Chassis?

again,, sorry for the long winded,, run on sentence,, question,, but I need to do a total system upgrade, and on my schedule and budget,, I am going to have to leap frog myself to where i need to be,, and still be able to work an a few projects.... thanks again for any info you might be willing to lend!

Happy New Years everybody!!!

Making jump to 5.1... which rears!

So my current pair of monitors are Focal Twins and I want to make the jump to 5.1 to have access to more projects. Room is 11.5' x 14' but I'm moving soon to hopefully a slightly larger room.

I would ideally want to buy 3 Focal Solo's and a Sub6, but I really can't afford that right now. Would buying 1 Focal Solo for the center and two Focal Alpha's (50's or 65's?) plus a 400-500 dollar sub work?

Buying a whole new 5.1 setup would work as well, but would take up much more space as I'd want to keep my Twins in the room.

This is mostly for indie films/shorts and small video game sound design and mixing. I would still go to a proper dub stage if I was doing a final mix for something that would be in any theaters.

Thanks!

seeking advice! mopho x4 // sub phatty

hello all.

this is my first post for all you slutz, was hoping to get some synth advice from someone more knowledgable than myself.

So basically, I want to buy a synth for primarily live use in a few different bands, it will be used for studio work but live is the focus here. I originally wanted it just for bass duties but as a piano player - polyphony really appeals to me.

So the question is, can the dave smith mopho / mopho x4 get a decent bass sound live? can it get close to the thick low end of the moogs / sub phatty? A very thick, earth crushing bass would be alot of fun for me and very useful for my current projects.

The moog stuff obviously sounds incredible however the polyphony and all the added features on the x4 look fantastic and would clearly make it a more versatile instrument, and I'll be playing saxophone and synth live so will only be having one synth. Also, the moogs have a very vintage sound to them, which is great but possibly limiting? It will be used for quite experimental music at times so i want to be able to experiment and make some weird sounds with it too.

I'll add that I really like the sound of analogue synths, but if a digital option sounds the same I wouldnt fight it. I also liked the Nord A1 when I played it but seemed to be seriously lacking in bass and had a slightly sterile sound to it. Any insight would be gratefully received!

Thanks, Miles

flux PureCompV3 installation puzzle

I just tried installing Pure Compressor and even though I specified my vst directory, my DAW Samplitude and Reaper cannot detect this plugin. I tried re-scanning many times but to no avail.

I also tried to search for any files related to this installation on my computer but the search returned no results. However, trying to reinstall it again is also impossible, because the Pure Compressor installer gave me a message that a more recent version of this plugin is already installed.

I also tried using rootsupd but once again no luck. In other words, right now I can’t install it and I can't uninstall it. I also have 4 other plugins by FLUX that are perfectly fine.

It is 2am and I need some help…Please.

AKG c414 problems.. please help

Hey guys, for the past couple weeks my AKG c414 mic has been giving me some serious issues.. Im not sure what the problem is but it shorts out randomly when high volumes are applied and then makes weird robotic noises that are hard to describe. It also seems much quieter than it used to be… almost like it lost 20db of gain when its working.. The audio it does pick up is faint and hollow sounding. Occasionally with some light smacking it goes back to full volume and sounds clear but only for split seconds here and there…

I have tried it on all cardioid patterns and they all seem to have the same problem.

I know it sounds like a cable issue from what I have described but

It is not the cable as I have tried all my other mics and they all sound loud and clear when plugged in… I have also tried several different cables to no avail.

Any reason or idea as to what or why this has happened and what I need to do to fix it?

Routing Experts are Needed here to sort out this system.

Looked for Soundcraft Ghost but No Luck, So I decided to get an Onyx 32.4 with Orion 32 to get all my 32 channels from my DAW to in front of me.

The setup I already have is an Apogee Symphony 8x8 going into D-BOX through some 500 series high end stuff. My summing is happening on D-BOX and coming back to DAW through Symphony A/D and going back into D-BOX External IN through Benchmark DAC-1 and I also monitor through D-BOX for my Main and Alt Speakers.

The things I want to do are:

1: I want to mix on Onyx

2: Feed Onyx with Orion 32 Outs D/A

3: I want to run my outboard Eqs and Compressors on specific channels on Onyx (lets say 1-12)

4: I want to monitor through D-BOX on both speaker sets

5: I want to print back the mix on DAW through Symphony A/D

6: I want to hear the printed back track through my DAC-1

7: May be I can send 4 stereo Busses from Onyx to D-BOX for 8 channels summing (not sure if its a good idea).

8: I want to use Onyx TALKBACK Mic for my recording booth

9: I want to use my API 2500 as my bus compressor on Onyx

Can anyone please throw some light on how can I do it or how is it possible? my main question is about routing the whole thing.

Thanks in Advance!!!!! cooge

Roland/boss SP-303 Dr.Sample help needed!

Hello, fellow slutz!

This is my 1st post to gearslutz so go easy on me, haha.

I've got an old SP-303 Dr. Sample that's giving me an error message when I power the unit on - reads either "8." or "B." (You never know with LCD characters) and the buttons are non-functional. Someone suggested to me that B could stand for internal battery, which is a reasonable assumption, but the issue with that is that particular model does not contain an internal battery. I'm fairly certain the 404 has an internal battery, but I'm almost completely positive that the 303 doesn't. I've tried the factory reset sequence, tried different power supplies, and I've scoured the Internet for answers but I have not come across a solution.

I've had this unit for over a decade so it's no surprise, and I know with time these things happen. But I love the Doctor and I'd like to continue using it. Not to mention that they are hard-to-find and I really don't feel like replacing it.

Anyone out there ever have this issue? HELP!?

Gear to convert 1/4" mono in to dual XLR out.

Sometimes I like to track synths through my H3500, which only has XLR in.

At the moment I'm using my little Mackie mixer to convert 1/4" in to dual XLR into the Eventide. But that is starting to misbehave, so I'm thinking about something else.

I did a quick search, and could only find this Behringer DI that performs this task. But I would like something a bit better.

So is there other options for this job? I don't really have a budget in mind, but wouldn't mind spending a bit, especially if it brings something worthwhile to the table.

how to squash 2 buss without squashing 2 buss!!

Was working on a song and got it sounding good. Had ozone on the master. Starting adjusting levels of individual drums and noticed I wasn't hearing the results. So, I checked ozone on the limiter was killing everything. Like maybe 16db of gain reduction. So I brought back all the levels, but obviously when they're not slamming the limiter the feel and color of the sounds changes quite a bit. So I started over and tried to find what was making me like the squashed mix better. So I looked at the drums that were triggering the huge gain reductions and then I side chained some of the other tracks to these drums, since in my oversquashed mix, everything was getting affected by these hits.

Anyways, been chasing my tail for hours and can't get it to feel quite right. Wondering if you guys have any tips for keeping some of the color and feel of squashing your 2 buss, but without squashing your 2 buss :)

I'm attempting to use a Midi Solutions F8 with a Saffire Pro40 for my additional Mainstage controls. I have 2 Pro40's, and neither are currently able to power the F8. MIDI is the only option for powering it. Can anyone see a reason why the Pro40 wouldn't supply power via MIDI?

di box for vintage mono and rme ufx

Hey guys

Happy holidays to all, my all your slutty plans come true in 2015!

Simple question here.

Currently I have an ms20 that I'm using a radial di with that goes into my rme UFX mic input. I understand that these inputs have a DI natively as well.

Im about to but a pro one and do the same thing, buy the same di and go Into the next mic input from there (I want to have everything plugged in always to avoid the inconvenience and distractions of connection and deconnection).

Question is, am I better suited not using these radial di boxes and going into the rme mic straight? If I can save the 200$, why not.

Am I infact bypassing the quality DI's in my soundcard and substituting it with the radial or are both working their way on the signal.

For my ms20, the di box really helped raise up the signal, I could gain in with the RME but for some reason I am under the impression the the di'd signal is better.

I guess i Could buy The di and try with / without but if this is a straight forward recording 101 type of scenario maybe I'll get my answer here.

Forgive me for my lack of knowledge on recording, I guess us 90s kids missed this when we started with plugins.

Thanks

Arranging - your workflow? (Cubase 7.5)

Seasons greetings howdy

For years I've been slapping songs together with very little forethought, organisation or structure and I think it's time to get a bit more clinical if I want to actually finish a higher percentage of ideas I start.

Usually what I'll do in Cubase is audition a number of midi drum sequences, choose one that imparts the groove I'm in the mood for and then load up a Rhodes or something that is flexible enough to be used as a bass, comp or lead and I'll just see what happens.

What I am wanting to do is, before I start priming myself for inspiration, set up a marker track, lay out a basic structure and aim to back-fill it. Otherwise, I'll have a tendency to stick to similar chord progressions and I end up with one really long verse.

How do you guys operate? Do you have a chart of progressions sorted by genre? Do you have a basic arrangement pattern you set up prior to composing? ie Verse, PreChorus, Chorus, Verse, Solo, Bridge, Chorus, Out etc.

How do you ensure you are productive and efficient? How do you ensure each time you start working that you finish things through to completion?

What is your workflow?

Cheers diddlydoo

A Drum Machine and a jazz pianist!

Hi guys,

next week i'll be able to work with a jazz pianist and i would like to make something club-oriented, relativly minimal.

I think that 'simply' with a piano and a drum machine something very good could come out.

I was wondering which direction to go, the first thing that came to my mind as 'inspiration' is some old Detroit records but i really don't want to fall too much in cliches.

Thinking about a (jazz) piano and a drum machine what comes to your mind?

Is there some track or advice you would like to suggest and share with me?

Do the big names clear obscure samples?

I was listening to the song "Flotus" by Flying Lotus and was curious about the string sample used, so I looked it up and discovered it was from an obscure track decades ago that I could hardly find any information on. Which makes we wonder; does a guy like Flying Lotus get sample clearance for something like that, generally speaking?

Best firewire card for soundcards

Hi, i am thinking of upgrading my firewire card it has the Texas Instruments Chipset TI TSB43AB23 and it has a PCI 32-bit 33MHz Interface, there is no power going to the card either, here is a link to the card i have SUNRICH TECHNOLOGY(H.K.)LIMITED So i was thinking about getting a PCIe firewire 800 card then getting a firewire 800 to 400 cabel to connect it to my Edirol FA66, here is a link to the card i am thinking about getting 3 Port 2b 1a PCI Express FireWire Card | FireWire Cards | StarTech.com it has a mini molex connecter on it for power from the PSU, then main reason i am thinking of doing this is my latency resluts

My PC Specs are as follows

Win 8.1 64bit

i7 4770k

Asus Z87k

16GB 1333Mhz Ram

Radeon HD 6770

Crucial M4 128GB (os)

Samsung EVO 840 250GB (Projects)

1x WD 1TB Black & 1x WD 1TB Blue (Samples/Banks & Back Up)

I have done all the tweeks i have been doing them for years, i also use autoruns to make sure that i only have cubase and what ever else is needed to run the OS on a offline Music Production PC, my lacency resluts are at 264 samples (which is the closest i can get to 256 samples, its just a slider in the control panel of the edirol fa66 that goes Smaller/Bigger Min/Max) the Input is 7.62ms and the Output is 14.2ms so the Overall is 21.8ms. I have also tested with CEntrance my results are at -12dB i get 901 samples and 20.43 latency the buffer size/latency doin this test is 264 samples(5.99ms)

Hope this info helps if there is anything im missing please let me know and i will update it

My main question is, would a firewire PCIe 800 card with power going to it give me better latency resluts than a firewire 400 pci card with no power

Thanks

Waves Tune - pencil draw the tune? And otherwise how do you like it?

HI - Over on the Cubase forum someone was saying that Waves Tune lets you draw in the tuning with the pencil tool. I went on line to the vids, but didn't see that demonstrated. Can anyone Y/N that for me please?

Also - if you use Waves Tune - especially if you've also used Cubase's VariAudio 2.0 - how do you like Waves Tune? Vids make it look easy to use. I'm reasonably satisfied with Cubase's VariAudio 2.0, but am willing to look at other options if the advantage is huge. (I see there is a Vibrato Creator section in Waves Tune, which I think *is* very cool, but not enough to make me drop VariAudio and drop $400 bucks for Waves Tune).

BUT - if the sonic results of Waves Tune blow away VariAudio's ... I could be tempted to spend the bucks.

What do people think?

Thanks!

Where to place mixing workstation?

I'm moving into a new apartment, and I'm looking for some general advice on where I should place my desk for a mixing/critical listening environment. The ceilings are high (11'6"), and the room I'm looking to use is the living room. Here's where it gets a little confusing for me:

I am planning to use a large screen (47") as the computer monitor and the TV for when company comes over. As you can see in the diagram, the window is at the top of the picture, and it is basically floor-to-ceiling. If I face that wall when mixing, the wall behind me is way back in the kitchen, where the front door is. So I'm not sure if that's too far back to cause any reflection issues.

I'm using Fostex 8.4.1 (3-way monitors with 8" woofer).

I'm a little afraid of placing a cloud up there 'cause at that height, if it falls on my head I will die (or worse, it'll damage my equipment!)

So anyway, is the only real logical place for this over in front of that window? I'm going to build some acoustic panels for the reflections, and hopefully will have enough duckets to afford some bass traps.

Bonus question: would diffusion be of use in a space this size? Ok thanks y'all

What Can Two Dead Men Teach Audio Engineers About Efficiency?

Hey guys,

I wrote an article going over the 80/20 principle for audio engineers.

It's a very extensive article, and definitely not for the light reader. I cover everything from explaining what the 80/20 principle is, to explaining how I brought up my income by 60% over the past year using this principle, and everything in between. There are even some random efficiency tips thrown in there for good measure.

Hopefully this helps some of you guys out, and if not, just tell me how much you hated the article.

How do I tell a friend...

Years ago my friend bought some prosumer gear and we started recording at home in our spare time. We would make a drum loop, make some instrument loops and just have fun. Add some quick vocals and a quick mix.. And it sounded ...ok. Lofi kinda, which I thought was great! The vocals weren't perfect but they were buried in the mix and it felt like music. Not great, but not horrible. We both went separate ways after this, but stayed friends.

Well years have passed and my friend has remixed and remixed it. Now it sounds nothing like the original mixes, Vocals are 10 feet above the tracks, and he spent years programming the drums to sound like a real drummer-...only of course it doesn't. Doesn't sound like electro either-just bad.

Acoustic instead of sounding like an sm57 like we tracked, it sounds like a wannabe Taylor swift acoustic. In your face and annoying.

Fine whatever... Just as long as no one hears it I think to myself

But.. He wants to officially release it 'now' cause he's depressed he's never released anything!

I'm like "let's have someone mix this"

he's offended.

He's convinced it's perfect now with all his work!

Releasing means that he'll be smearing all our Facebook friends/old fans.

I'm so embarrassed by this, he put my shaky vocals so high above the music.. Like that horrible U2 album from Apple. Only I'm no Bono!

I don't know what to do. I keep saying "let's re-record" but he's arguing against me on everything. Nobody who has heard it can listen more that 10 seconds

Any suggestions?

Thanks ...

(PM me if you want to hear it.)

Anyone done some mixing on their SSL X-desk?

I am about to do my first mix on my SSL X-desk. For this, I am assuming you use the "Centre out" output on the rear panel right? What happens in your DAW when you mix? Do you get your final stereo track come out on a stereo track in your DAW and then bounce that stereo track to wav or mp3 or whatever?

cheers

Interested in a prophet with a damaged key.....help!

I've come across someone selling a prophet 08 with 1 defective key. He can't tell me exactly what's wrong with it other than it doesn't register and "probably needs the contact changed

Is this something I could do? Is it an easy or difficult repair? About how much would it cost? Do you think that's likely the problem?

Worst case scenario?

Thanks so much in advance

Please help me to decide

Hello fellow slutz,

I 've been searching the internet, reading articles and asking the companies, but still am unsure what headphone to get.

I have a home studio and am working in it quite some time, but now some things changed and therefore I can no longer work as much and as loud I want on my Adam P22a monitors.

So I decided to take some money and buy me the best headphones for under 2000 $ that suite my needs which are:

- Clear, neutral sound, I want as less masking as possible.

- A great comfort to wear, since they will be used quite a lot.

- no amp needed, I only have the output of my RME Fireface UC.

Now I would buy the Audeze LCD X, but many people complain about the heavy weight.

Some even say, they can only have em on for like an hour, which would be really a big Contra.

Then there are the Fostex TH 900 which are suppose to be a real treat in terms of wearing comfort but do mask the sound quite a bit.

I also checked out Alpha Dogs, since they were mentioned quite a bit even though they are so much cheaper, but I don't know of anyone personally who owns them.

I'm usually composing scoring music for tv series but I also have a drum and bass project going, so there is not really a general type of music that the HP are suppose to sound great on, that's why clarity is most important!

I would be very happy about your thoughts on this matter!

Thanks a lot!!!

Why do I get another red fader in my mixer when I add FX track?

In cubase 8 I have 3 recorded mono audio tracks. 2 guitar tracks and one vocal track. I added a reverb FX channel to use on my vocal so I got the purple fader in my mixer which controls how much of the reverb I hear. I don't understand why I also have another red fader for that vocal channel which seems to adjust the volume. What is the point of it?

thank you for your help

Many low-mid monitoring devices better than one high mid range for 'bedroom' users?

To me after some application of logic and common sense this seems like a straight yes. But I'd be very interested to hear the opinions of studio owners/staff/me's/etc

What I mean by 'bedroom' producers is people with semi-pro at best sound treatment and anything below, smaller rooms with imperfect conditions.

So what i'm asking, this is just a quick theoretical example, is say...

rather than a pair of k-120's rrp about £1g are we not going to get a better overall picture from maybe dt770, sen 380, dynaudio bm5a2's?

Because there would still be about £300 left over on the the k-120's, for maybe an extra and you would have four, in theory accurate but different systems to check on.

As for what I'm talking about on usage, just to get work ready for use, ready to be played out, ready to be sent off etc etc.

Obviously not trying to compete with the level of clarity/detail/accuracy a full studio can, pretty pointless exercise imo.

Over the last few years what you can get for so little has really shot up through the roof from where I stand. Not to mention these new JBL's everyone seems so excited about, £100 each 0.o.

Would Focal Alpha 65's be a huge improvement over my KRK Rokit 6's?

So I currently have a pair of KRK Rokit 6 G2 which I bought when I first started producing after getting suckered into all the hype about them. Now three years later, I am not happy with them anymore as my mixes always translate poorly so want to replace them but without spending huge amounts of money.

So I am hearing good things about the Focal Alpha 65's, and they are 'only' about £150 more than what a pair of Rokit 6's retail for. So at this price point, would they be a huge improvement over what i have now?

Separate Sample/Audio drives on diff busses?

i am building a macmini system for a friend.

i am using two external drives, one for samples, one for audio.

is it ok to put both of those external drives into one (dual-bay) usb 3,0 enclosure and let them share one usb 3,0 port?

or should I put the sample drive into a single bay usb enclosure and let it use a usb 3.0 port and the audio drive into a single bay fw800 enclosure and let it use the fw800 port on the macmini?

my thinking behind option 2 is that the data will be spread across two separate busses..

Am i doing the right thing?

Hi,

Im making a small studio for myself and have a few questions. I need to build a side wall for the studio. The other 3 sides are existing concrete walls. I DONNOT require any sound proofing. I just need to treat my room acoustically.

The plan is, make wooden studs, fill rock wool between them and drywall on either side of the studs. Then hang acoustic panels wherever required on all the walls.

Any better path for me to go?

(I intend to use 6" thick & 96kg rock wool for the acoustic panels and 4" thick 64kg rock wool to be put in the wall. How many inches apart should i places the studs for the wall though?)

Revisiting Waves Plugins

Years ago I owned Waves Native Gold- like back in the late 90s. I dropped out of music production for a decade, and am in the process of rebuilding my project studio.

I received a promo for Waves Sound Design Bundle-- at $299. On the surface this seems like a great deal. Then I see it 'retails' at $1400- or something like that-- then I dig up this old thread: introducing-waves-sound-design-suite which shows a retail price on a magnitude of 10 (like $3200 back in 2010 ?!?!).

So I am thinking-- half of the plugins are the same ones I used 10+ years ago. It isn't looking like there is much of an evolution in them.

Back in the day, I mainly used limiting, multi-band compression, and EQ. I found the results OK for mastering, but a bit dull and lifeless, which was acceptable at the time. I have much higher expectations these days, given the evolution of virtual instruments, processing power, etc.

I realize this suite is not designed as a mastering bundle, but it is realistic to find alternatives to Waves in this price range? Or is this a good deal considering today's state of the art of plugins? Also, I am not up to date on their copy protection scheme, but do I need a USB port for a dongle?

Strat bridge placement

I've just finished a Strat build and apparently made an error when drilling the 6 pivot screw holes for the bridge. The treble side screw is 1/32" closer to the nut/12th than the bass side scew.

My instinct says that the adjustable saddles will negate this problem. The bridge is currently decked with the vibrato bar removed and the guitar tunes and intonates perfectly. What if I wanted to float the trem and use it; will the slightly offset bridge create any issues?

I really don't want to drill and fill these holes

Ambient guitar recording/listening/playing

Hi folks! I am new at this but have a question. I am doing a bit of ambient guitar/synthesizer and for the moment I go from a pedal board into a schertler mono-amp. But want to go stereo. What would you recommend? Go from, the pedalboard to two combo amps like Fender junior blues III, record with shure SM57 LC -->mixer-->focusrite interface --->computer or would it be better to go from pedalboard into Mackie mixer and then to two monitors and/or focusrite. -->computer? I do this at home. I would appreciate some advice. Thanks very much :-)

High frequency noise in monitors

I'm using HS-5s (Yamaha) for my home studio monitors.

I'm getting a high frequency noise coming out of them anytime they're on.

I've done every method of problem solving that I can think of.

They emit the noise in my condo and outside of our building.

The noise sounds like dial up but at a higher frequency. When I've brought them to a completely different location the noise is gone.

I've tried chokes, rf filters, power conditioners, replacing all recpticles in condo, ground lift, turning off all power except for the monitor location, different power cables, removing and obviously, unplugging Wifi.

I'm about out of options other than to move out.

I was previously monitoring through headphones and passive monitors and didn't hear the noise. It started when I began using the powered HS-5s.

Anyone out there with any good advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks.

Location of Mass in a MSM Wall

I'm studying Rod's book with regards to MSM wall construction, and have a query with regards to location of the mass in a MSM wall construction.

My situation is that I live on a large rural property in the Southern Tablelands of NSW, and I have access to an 8m x 8m space inside a newly erected colourbond(steel) shed with concrete floor and 5m pitched roofline. I'm hoping to build a couple of room within rooms inside for a control room and tracking room (private use). Neighbours/noise are not an issue (we are in the middle of 250 acres), however I do wish to isolate the room structures properly from the steel exterior so that rain noise and metal expansion noises during changing weather do not dictate when I can record.

Ideally, I would wish to build a free standing wall structure just inside (but not attached to the metal sheeting of the shed walls) that would consist of, firstly 100mm insulation lining directly to the interior of the colour bond metal walls, then 16mm drywall or plywood>insulated studs>airgap>insulated studs>16mm plywood with 2nd layer of 16mm drywall (being the interior of the room).

I doubt the metal wall would be considered a mass layer?

The problem I have is that being on the farm (just my wife and myself) I can foresee a problem in building the frame for the exterior part of the wall on the floor, attaching the one or 2 layers of 16mm drywall, and then raising it myself - the weight would simply be too heavy for an 8m wall length some 4-5 metres high.

To cut back to the question, could I take an alternate approach by erecting the first wall of 2x4 studs against the insulated layer of the colour bond metal wall (not touching it) then applying a couple of layers of 16mm drywall to it, then leaving an air gap, then insulated 2x4 studs and finally another 2 x 16mm drywall layers, i.e. insulated studs>drywall layers>airgap>insulated studs>drywall layers. Would this compromise the performance significantly given my modest needs?

Thanks for any advice.

PS with regards the actual studio layout, I am quite keen to model the design that Rod goes into some detail with in his book in Chapter 10 "Putting It All Together" (figure 10.5 studio layout)

Vintage Sampler Recommendations!

Hi Guys,

I need advice on what are the best software emulated hardware samplers.

I'm looking to achieve that vintage sampler sound from the 80's so I'm looking for emulations of the obvious classics that sound great!

I have just been toying around with Sonic Charge Cyclone which is an emulation of the Yamaha TX16W. I must say it's a really fantastic emulation and the sound is really amazing, however since it's an accurate clone I don't care much for the disk loading and memory clearing procedure which takes forever lol charming experience but sadly not practical for my modern attention span. lol

Getting started building my home studio

Hey all, I've been lurking around for a bit, doing a lot of research both here and around the web. I'm very green at recording/mixing/etc, but I'm eager to learn and starting to gather what I need to get somewhat of a reasonable home studio going. Before I start asking questions, let me get to what I have:

-Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 interface

-Shure SM7b mic(my only mic at the moment)

-Fairly powerful custom built PC rig running Ableton Live 9 Suite

-M Audio Axiom 49 midi controller

-Shure SRH440 Headphones

-1964 Ears Triple driver in ear monitors

-Miscellaneous electric and acoustic guitars, amps, pedals, etc.

-Small drum set

Now here's where I start to form opinions, which may or not be wholly inaccurate! I believe that my mic and interface should be good enough to at least capture DECENT audio on most single sound sources I might try to capture, and I've got some good foundations to be able to lay down virtual instruments as well. Not a world class setup by any means, but I think good enough that my own skills would be holding me back more than the equipment. I'm thinking where I should go from here is to get a solid room, and then practice, practice, practice before I start buying a ton of gear and falling into the "If only I had ___, my recordings would sound good" trap. So question one, is this line of thinking correct? The only thing I can really think of that may fall under the NEED category might be monitors, right? Can I get away with mixing on my headphones or my in ear monitors for a bit while I work on my skillset and get my room set up? I know this isn't ideal, and that I will have a hard time getting my mixes to translate for a while, but is it feasible for the short term?

Next, there is the matter of the room. I have 3 available spaces in my room. An upstairs loft, and the 2 adjoining bedrooms. All 3 areas are carpeted. The loft is 9'x17', and there is a 14' long half wall running alongside one side that separates the loft from the stairway to the lower level. The first bedroom is 10'x10'8", and the second is 9'8"x11'10", with a 1'x3' alcove where the door to the loft is. I imagine the first room, being nearly square, would be the least optimal. The loft is by far the biggest space, but I don't know how the adjoining stairway would affect acoustics. I could probably convince the wife to let me use the loft and one of the bedrooms, say like a control room and separate live room, but definitely not both bedrooms. What would you guys choose and what should I consider in the process? Whatever I pick will be getting mild acoustic treatment(bass traps, diffusers, etc), but probably nothing fancier than what I can build myself for a couple hundred bucks.

If there are any questions, please do feel free to ask. I'm sure I've glossed over a lot of important information. Thanks in advance for all your help!

Too many EQs, too little time!

I've narrowed my choices to 3 within my budget and preferences: the Elysia xfilter, the TK-lizer and the Kush electra.

The stereo operation of the xfilter would suit my needs ideally, but I already have an xpressor, and having both seems to me like putting all your eggs in one sonic basket.

Also, the m/s EQ possibilities of the TK appeal.

While the Kush seems ... a bit American (?). But since I will be upgrading from an MXR dual graphic box, that I could go for.

I hope to decide before 2015 arrives!

Too many EQs, too little time!

How big of a difference should the woofer size be between nearfields and sub?

Can I pair up two 10" woofer sized monitors with a 12" woofer sized sub?

Or 8" woofer sized monitors would be better for a 12" woofer sized sub?

Looking to purchase the Dynaudio BM12a's with the 12" sub from Dynaudio. I believe the sub is BM14s which is a 12" sub.

I never really heard people talk about the woofer size difference between your nearfields and sub which why I'm asking. Cant find anything about this topic on the net so any help would be appreciated.

How big of a difference should the woofer size be between nearfields and sub?

What did you tell them?

I say upgrade Massive interface and unison.

That would make me happy

Do I really need my D-box? Do I really need analog summing?

I bought a D-box a couple of years ago for my last album. I sent 4 busses out of Cubase (bus 1 pads, bus 2 percussion, etc.) into the D-box for analog summing then back into Cubase. To tell you the truth, I'm not sure I noticed any improvement in sound over my prior album in which I did not have the D-box and went 100% ITB.

Wouldn't using my Slate VCC get me nearly the same ever-so-slight distortion and analog warmth that the D-box gets me?

D.A.V. BG#8 with...

Given a D.A.V. BG#8 for micpres, what converter/interface would you pair it with? Needs to be less than $3500 USD.

Using it in a location kit 19" rack, acoustical work only -- small groups to large groups, jazz, folk, classical. So I need it to handle transients well, be transparent rather than colored, and be quiet, both electrically and acoustically. It would be nice if it didn't get hot in use so I don't have to add fans to the location rack case.

Need to record all eight channels to a laptop (almost certainly win8.1) running probably Pyramix or Sequoia for DAW software (still working on that decision). So through USB or Ethernet (Dante, Revenna).

What do y'all think would make a good match for the D.A.V.?

KORG announces the development of a new line of EURODESK Mixing Consoles!

These consoles are engineered to meet Behringer's outstanding quality standards. When the ambient temperature goes above 75 degrees the FX processor will emit deafening white noise into the mains and when you take it on stage the outputs will go dead on the 1st note of the 1st song your band plays ensuring your audience never comes to see you play again.

Downsizing DX7 Mk 1: Tx7 or TX802?

I’m trying to downsize the studio without losing any sounds. Iconic as my DX7 is, I think it can go.

So should I get a TX7 or a TX802? (Or maybe the wildcard DX200?)

TX7

Pros: Same engine and sound as mark1. Small and not too much hassle to gig with. Cheap.

Cons: Still monotimbral. No Special Edition ROM features such as saving mono/poly setting with patch, I think. No cartridge slot, so I can only store half the patches I have at hand with mark1/RAM cart. Takes up tabletop space.

TX802

Pros: Not monotimbral. Rackmountable. Stores more patches than TX7 (I think). More depth and options than mark 1 or TX7. Plays my mk1 patches (I think).

Cons: possibly loses some of the sonic character that I like about the mk1. (I like how warm, wooly, and organic the mk1 can be. It feels like an instrument.) Costs more than TX7 or mk1, generally.

I am leaning toward the 802, but how big is the difference in tone between a mk1 DX7 and an 802? Is the 802 sterile in comparison? Could I dial in some lows and low-mids to compensate?

No need to mention FM8 or how difficult it is to edit these , thanks.:)

Dopetank Refills Releases a Polysix Refill

Hi, after a long break of commercial Refill releases, I'm back with something new.

I have created 34 patches for Korg's Polysix. It's not the most versatile synth, but I think I still successfully made up lot of variable patches for this synth. The price of this refill is 4 Euros.

And of course there is a demo song for this Refill:

Digi002R help needed, NYC lab??

Hey guys,

I think my 002r just died, the electrician turned the power breaker when it was on..

THE PROBLEM: although the 1394 firewire light is ON, and the computer recognizes the audio device, THERE IS NO SOUND, not from the monitors and not from the headphones...

Has anyone experienced this problem?

Do you have an idea what has happened?

In case it's something that I cannot fix myself, Do you know a good lab in NYC that can fix this?

Thank you in advance,

Shai.

Ramlatch 54 Pair Tester

Hi All,

I want to see if anyone knows of a tester I could buy or build for testing Ramlatch 54Pair mult cables. At the moment I'm having to attach fanouts either end and test the lines with an XLR tester and multimeter probes. As you can imagine this is very time consuming.

I've been thinking of building some kind of tester for these as it's taking up way too much of my time. Has anyone ever built one before or have any designs?

Thanks.

Petition for EU VAT digital services exemption

Moderators: if this is a duplicate thread or in the wrong forum please move it.

Just FYI if you are currently selling any digital services/goods to an EU country you must now fill out a mountain of paperwork for tax collecting and client data record keeping starting January 1 2015. Various artists on bandcamp and other sites have to pull non streaming goods down until said paperwork is done.

Consider signing the petition so those under the exemption earnings limit will be exempted:

Mixer with USB (help a very confused newbie)

Hello there Ladies & Gentlemen,

I'm here in search of help. I hope you can forgive my English and my very poor understanding of audio engineering. Keep it simple please.

I want to buy a mixer with a USB port, so that I won't need a separate audio interface (I'm short on money).

I'd like the mixer to be efficient for home recording (basic stuff: some folk stuff - like Springsteen's "Nebraska" or Elliot Smith's "Roman Candle" and some noisy Burzum-like black metal)

and I'd like to use it also for band rehearsing and small pub gigs (no need to mic the drums)

I've been looking for some models in the shops around here but I don't know which features I should look for in a mixer.

So, do you have any tips for me? Any particular model? Any particular feature?

Thanks for your time & help.

Is Pro Tools still worth it for 'hobbyists'?

I myself have become what is essentially a hobbyist after closing down my studio. I also have frequently recommended Pro Tools to people looking to become more serious in the music/recording/audio world.

However, with the price of PT going up to $899, is it really a sensible option for people not making or not intending to make money with their recording endeavors?

What exactly makes PT worth so much more, for a hobbyist, than options like Logic, Cubase, Studio One, Samplitude, Sonar and others?

Beware of psycho_monkey the Moronic Moderator

Hi Guys,

Just thought I'd put it out there that psycho_monkey a moderator of this forum will delete your posts just because he feels like it.

I propose that this psycho_monkey should be stripped of his role as moderator as he is completely incompetent in his duties.

I came to gear sluts asking for advice and I have been treated like garbage by psycho_monkey who deleted my thread without explanation or any provable grounds on which to do so.

Shame on you psycho_monkey for your completely unprofessional attitude towards your responsibility.

Late 1950's/early 1960's European studio tape recorders?

A question: If I were to walk into a European recording studio between, let's say 1958 and 1963, what make/model tape recorders would I find? I am going on the assumption here that the British/Germans/etc. might not use the same equipment as the U.S. (Ampex) for their professional tape recorders.

My impression is that the late 50's, early 60's might be a bit early for widespread use of Studers?

urs motown eq's...do they still stand up?

hi guys,

I am debating picking this up before the end of the year. just curious if the urs motown eq's are still relevant by today's standards/offerings...sonically?

please...no griping about lack of 64bit support. 64/32 bit is all the same to me on my system and not a deal breaker to me at this time.

thanks in advance.

API v/s NAIL/BAX/SCL-1 v/s Barricade ITB

Today while tweaking my new setup it was time to do a test:

I've got a typical EDM track and mastered it 3 ways (no particular order)

2x OTB

chain 1: Madison > Sigma > M/S Master > SCL-1 > BAX EQ > HM2 Nail > Tascam DA3000 AD > Barricade

chain 2: Madison > Sigma > API 2500 > API 5500 > Tascam DA3000 AD > Barricade

1x ITB being ONLY Barricade, matching loudness with only input gain :)

Purpose of the test was to see where throwing in all the "loud" tricks (converter clipping, turning off ISP, raising wavelab volume ITB etc.etc. )while "preserving dynamics" made each version go.

4 differences you might appreciate:

- Tone & weight

- appearant loudness

- dynamics

- breathing / limiting artifacts.

There is nothing scientific about it. but it sort of shows the differences between ITB & OTB, as well as OTB component choice (API has a distinct sound)

I've shuffled and labelled them A,B,C for the ones that like guessing.

Synthesist Thinktank: Your favourite recipes for analogue bells

So we know that many digital instruments excel at bell sounds, PPG, DX7, D50, SQ80, VS, etc. I have a bell patch on a lowly TG55 that I f00king love. The Poly 800 had a really lovely bell pad that I sampled.

Whilst icy and glassy, such digi-bell sounds can be a little cheesy, and cannot really match analogue bell sounds for sheer haunting beauty, especially through a nice reverb, and a raw, rough-around the edges appeal.

So what are your favourite recipes for analog bell sounds? I'd like to use some of them and explore this territory on the following synths:

Mono/Poly - XMOD, Ultra fast LFO permits VCF and VCO FM, Filter self oscillates beautifully, without any volume drop or tone-eating, a pure sine wave.

Matrix 6 - Filter FM, extensive envelopes and ramps for honing those attack transients.

MFB Dominion 1 - Proper VCO/VCF FM via VCO, Multimode Filter, Ring Mod.

Jupiter 6 - XMOD, Multimode Filter

Figuring I should be able to get a nice bell sound out of at least one of them, whether it be the tubular type or the more ethereal glassy one.

If this goes well we can potentially start more specific threads, synthesist think tanks on your favourite ways of doing pads, or brass or percussion, I have some cool tricks for percussion that I can share, especially ride cymbals and claps :)

Weird editing bug (?) group mode.

Hi! I'm editing drums at the moment and this weird thing keeps happening now and again.

I'm in group mode. Separating and moving all drum tracks like I've always done. but sometimes this happens: http://www.bilddump.se/bilder/201412...95.130.241.png

Only some tracks will move and others stay put.

Googled, searched forums, tried to solve it myself. I doesn't happen very often, but too often.

Kind of annoying since editing drums already is a pain in the ass.

Running Pro Tools 10. Got three playlists of drum takes, grabbing the best parts from the three and putting it into one.

Would be awesome if someone had any solution. Thanks!

John
