Modern MIDI patchbays

So, I realize there are lots of threads on similar topics, but none on this specific issue. I see lots of threads on older midi patchbays, midi interfaces, and smaller modern units that are able to patch, but almost nothing on 'what to do these days if you need at LEAST a 16x16 patchbay'.

The only advice that ever seems to be given is for older patchbays, such as the JL Cooper Synapse or the MSB 16/20 or similar ... is there really NO modern solution for this?

Let's say I have 4 MIDI out from an MPC, 2 from a computer, and 1 from an ASR, that's already using 7 inputs ... not to mention any effect units, or racked instruments (which I happen to have many more of). What is a MODERN solution for patching these together??? Is there one?? Am I missing something?

I fully realize that I'm able to use MIDI thru, but that will incur a delay. I'm not sure what other possible solutions I could be overlooking. How did studios in the early 90s with 30+ rack instruments patch all their MIDI together??

I've came up with a whole list of modern options, however, I can't really find any reliable reviews from people using them in this manner.

There is of course, the MOTU MIDI Express XT, which you apparently can chain 3 or 4 together on a USB hub, and patch between them. How is the latency on this? Is it acceptable?

There is also the older MOTU MIDI Timepiece AV USB, which allows a serial connection with another unit. I have a hard time believing this connection runs higher than 1x MIDI rate, but I could be wrong ... does anyone know if this solution has close to zero latency?

There also seems to be the iConnectMIDI units, that lets you chain a bunch together over USB as well. However, they seem to be a bit overpriced for offering only 4 ports each (compared to the price of 8 on the MIDI Timepiece). I don't think they were quite designed for this in mind ...

Another interesting one I found, was the Alyseum AL-88c, which connects over Ethernet (and can be chained). It's very reasonably priced for a 8 I/O box, and seems to be able to do patching as well. However, the only reviews of it I can find on gearslutz, is that it has not so great PC<->MIDI performance. I can't seem to find anyone who has tried to chain 2+ of these on a network to use as a patchbay ...

And the final 'solution' I found, was the MIDIbox Matrix project (mb_matrix [MIDIbox]). This one actually seems PERFECT, however, it isn't a commercial project. I'd easily pay $500 for one though.

Has ANYONE had any experience with the latency times in chaining any of these more modern units??? Can any of these systems approach the 0 latency speeds of older 8x8 integrated patchbays?

If there's something I'm missing, please let me know :)
