A pair of unbeaten welterweights will square off in Ireland in July, as the first fight is on the board for the UFC’s return to Dublin.
Ryan LaFlare (11-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) will meet Iceland’s Gunnar Nelson (12-0-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) at the UFC’s “Fight Night” card in Dublin. The news first was reported on Icelandic television, and a source with knowledge of the booking on Tuesday confirmed the fight to MMAjunkie. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the fight.
UFC Fight Night in Dublin takes place July 19 at The O2. It will be the promotion’s second visit to Dublin. The card is expected to stream on UFC Fight Pass in the U.S.
LaFlare is coming off a unanimous decision win over John Howard earlier this month at UFC Fight Night 39 in Abu Dhabi. That kept him unbeaten both as a professional and in the UFC. Although he started his UFC career with a 7-0 record with seven stoppages, all four of his UFC wins have been by unanimous decision.
Nelson in March kept his undefeated record intact when he stopped Omari Akhmedov with a first-round guillotine choke at UFC Fight Night 37 in London. The victory got him a “Performance of the Night” bonus and got him back on the stoppage track after needing to go to the judges to beat Jorge Santiago in February 2013. Prior to that unanimous decision win, all of his previous victories had been by stoppage.
