Marcos Maidana trainer: 'Cain Velasquez has skills to become boxing champion in two or three years'

Cain Velasquez has shown that he can outstrike the best-of-the-best in mixed martial arts (MMA). But, can "Brown Pride" do the same to the best Heavyweight boxers in the world? One famed trainer seems to think he can.
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight Champion, Cain Velasquez, has already conquered the world of mixed martial arts (MMA).
But, can he do the same in the sport of boxing? Robert Garcia, famed trainer of the "sweet science," seems to think so.
Speaking to Sherdog, Garcia -- who has trained the likes of Antonio Margarito, Kelly Pavlik, Fernando Vargas and Brandon Rios, among others -- says that during a recent training session with Velasquez, he instantly knew the 265-pound UFC champion has what it takes to make some noise in the boxing world.
His words:
Nothing better than to receive the praise of a man whose molded countless champions in the sport of boxing.
Indeed, Cain has show he can pack a punch and possesses great technique acquired during his time with American Kickboxing Academy (AKA). While Velasquez has yet to land a one-punch knockout inside the Octagon, he has proven he can out-strike the best of them on the feet.
Just ask Junior dos Santos ... or don't.
Garcia's next challenge will come this weekend (May 3, 2014) as he prepares Marco Maidana to take on the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world, Floyd Mayweather Jr., in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Velasquez, meanwhile, will next go toe-to-toe against Fabricio Werdum -- a man who proved in his last outing that his striking has improved leaps and bounds -- at UFC 180 on Nov. 15, 2014 in Mexico City. But first, the two men will battle it out as opposing coaches on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF): "Latin America," which premiers on Aug. 18, 2014.
See their first staredown pic right here.
And who knows, should Velasquez ever decide to jump ship, perhaps he can become the first-ever to hold titles in both sports.
Cain Velasquez vs Tyson Fury, anyone?

His words:
"There's a local [MMA] gym here in Oxnard, and I have had some of the guys come in and do stand up with us. One of the guys that came in for a few days that was training with me that we were really excited to have was Cain Velasquez. He was here for three days and worked with me and everything. I think this guy is not only great at what he does, but he could also be a great boxer because he's got tremendous power. When I hold the mitts with Cain Velasquez, right away I told his people that brought him, I said, ‘What do you guys think about training for boxing because this guy could make a lot of noise in professional boxing?' He's got skills and tremendous power. He's got good boxing skills. I think a good trainer could teach him how to fight, build up a good record in two or three years and become a champion. I honestly believe so."
