Nate Diaz‘s rep doesn’t have much to say about UFC President Dana White’s comment this past weekend that his fighter is “ready to fight.”
That’s a given, he said.
“I don’t have a clue what that means, but he’s always ready to fight,” Mike Kogan told MMAjunkie. “But we’ll see. We’ll see what happens.”
Following this past weekend’s UFC 172, White relayed a conversation he had with UFC matchmaker Joe Silva, who said he’d spoken with Diaz (17-9 MMA, 12-7 UFC).
“I think Joe Silva did and Nate said he’s ready to fight, so he told Joe to call him,” White said.
On its face, that seems good news for a fighter who only recently was asking for his release from the promotion, which in turn told him to get back to work. White defended Diaz’s pay to MMA Fighting and gave the impression a standoff was in store.
Now, the ice appears to be thawing, at least according to the promotion. Kogan, however, said Diaz’s disposition hasn’t changed much since the dueling interviews.
Whatever the case, the UFC needs headliners for a busy event schedule. White said this past year the promotion is planning close to 50 events all around the world with the addition of UFC Fight Pass-streamed events. Already, there have been 14 events this year, with two four-event months.
The good news is that the lightweight title picture is soon to be in motion, as UFC lightweight champ Anthony Pettis returns at the end of this year to fight fellow “The Ultimate Fighter 20″ coach Gilbert Melendez. Pettis also has expressed an interest in fighting Diaz, who has talked trash about him online.
Diaz’s most recent performance came this past November, when he stopped Gray Maynard in a rubber match via first-round TKO. Afterword, he turned down a fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov in an effort to get a salary bump.
