A highly ranked heavyweight will collide with a former runner-up of “The Ultimate Fighter” in December at UFC 181.
Travis Browne and Brendan Schaub are set to fight at the event, UFC officials announced following an initial report from FOXSports.com.
UFC 181 takes place Dec. 6 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. The main card, including a pair of title fights, airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FOX Sports and UFC Fight Pass.
Browne is ranked No. 5 and Schaub is unranked in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA heavyweight rankings.
Browne had won three straight fights and was a victory away from a title shot, but in April, he suffered early-fight injuries and ultimately dropped a decision to Fabricio Werdum at UFC on FOX 11. Prior to the defeat, the 32-year-old Team Jackson-Winkeljohn fighter posted consecutive “Knockout of the Night” wins over Gabriel Gonzaga, Alistair Overeem and Josh Barnett.
He now meets Schaub, a “TUF 10″ finalist who had defeated Lavar Johnson and Matt Mitrione, which set up a UFC 174 bout with former champ Andrei Arlovski in June. The 31-year-old ultimately suffered a split-decision defeat, though nearly every major media outlet scored the fight for Schaub.
The latest UFC 181 card now includes:
Champ Chris Weidman vs. Vitor Belfort – for middleweight title
Champ Anthony Pettis vs. Gilbert Melendez – for lightweight title
Travis Browne vs. Brendan Schaub
