Editing Audio To Remove Room Noise

To start with I will let you know about my setup. I am using a Canon 550d to record video. The camera has MagicLantern installed. I have turned off all Digital Gains and AGC. Analog Gain is set at +10db. I am using a shotgun microphone to record my audio. I am using a Rode Videomic Pro boomed to 10 inches or 25cm from my mouth. Gain is set at +20db and HPF is off. Room has no sound treatment due to being a rental. I have placed a rug underneath my chair to help with floor noise (wooden floor boards 2nd storey) but room is about 6 metres deep by 3 metres wide (20 feet by 10 feet).

I'm trying to increase the quality of my audio for my YouTube channel and just want some confirmations that what I am doing is correct or if there is a better way to do the things I am currently doing. I use Adobe Audition CC 2014.

Here are 3 samples of silence and dialogue in wav format:

http://ift.tt/1FSMwdC

First sample is unaltered straight from the video track.

Second sample has the following effects applied:

1. Normalise to -3DB

2. Single Band Compressor Settings are:

  • Threshold = -15db

  • Ratio = 8:1

  • Attack = 2.3ms

  • Release = 100ms

  • Output Gain = 0db

3. Normalise to -3DB

Third sample has a Dynamics Processing Noise Gate with the following settings:

1. Ratio = 1:1 / Type = Neutral / Threshold = Above -20db

2. Ratio = 2.15:1 / Type = Expander / Threshold = Below -20db

3. Ratio = 7.77:1 / Type = Compressor / Threshold = Below -54.86db

4. Ratio = INFINTE / Type = Expander / Threshold = Below -93.70db

All three samples are 20 seconds long and are downloadable to check spectrums etc.

I have been looking at Mixing Units with compression (only the $200 ones) and some of the DBX 166s Rackmount Units to possible help with processing before (or even to cut out) Audition but if it's going to be pretty much the same as the software solution, I can't justify the spend right now. The camera sits at about the 3m (10 foot) mark of the room so my voice travels all the way to the end without anything stopping it. I may also build a portable acoutic foam wedge tile to sit behind the camera to stop my voice traveling if anyone thinks this may help with my dialogue.

What I am ultimately looking for is confirmation of what I am doing is correct for what I am dealing with or if I should be doing something different in Adobe Audition CC 2014.
