Glassy Pad Sound

Hi All

I usually investigate this kind of thing myself, but thought I'd throw it out there for the Gearslutz experts to give me a response.

I just bought the new Sufjan Stevens' album, Carrie and Lowell, and while it's stripped down and acoustic for the most part (and an early contender for album of the year!!!!) there are some neat electronic flourishes and pad sounds.

One of them is one I've heard before, especially on Radiohead albums. It's very cold sounding and just has a real beautiful presence that works well with vocal albums.

It starts off the Sufjan track beneath, and also appears at around 2:37 in the Radiohead track.

I know Radiohead have a bunker of old equipment, and I'm guessing it could be an Ondes Martenot, or some such rare thing.

Any suggestions? It almost sounds digital, but then I'm not one hundred percent sure.
