Anderson Silva: My time as a champion has passed.

by David Abramvezt

Anderson Silva' recovery from a broken left leg is surprising a lot of people. After the serious injury occurred at UFC 168 in December, Spider underwent surgery, and this last stage, comes posting pictures and videos with the evolution of their treatment almost every week. Even his kicks have begun to take - lightly, true - which makes some think that the Brazilian is close to a return to the Octagon. The truth is that his leg still has a long way to go before he's able to fight again. In an interview with Combate.com in São Paulo, the former middleweight champion's return provides only for the next year. It will not be in the first months (see video).

The predictions that will he fight at UFC 181 on an upcoming event or are not true. This year is already over for him. Can you fight in the middle of next year - the Spider, which surprisesingly told that he does not have many claims to fight for the belt again:

"The stage of champion Anderson passed. Fight for it was a bit far for me."

The middleweight division is renewed, and new forces are excelling, leaving Anderson with the certainty that he will only enter the octagon for a few more fights to end his career. He has already participated in two events since signing a new ten fight agreement with the organization, but with all the changes that caused the injury in his life, he now believes he will be unable to finish it.

"I do not see myself stopping, but do not know if I'll have bag to fulfill the contract of ten fights. For many years the family asks me to stop, and they need to understand that is what I love to do and I need to have to take my time. But my mission was to become a reference in the sport, and I'm managing to do my part."

UFC president Dana White was confident that Anderson Silva would make his return to the Octagon by the end of 2014, but the former champion isn’t that optimistic.

Slowly returning to training after suffering a gruesome injury against Chris Weidman at UFC 168 in December, Silva expects to fight again in 2015.

"These rumors that I’ll fight at UFC 181 or any other event around that date aren’t true," Silva told Combate. "This year is over for me. There’s a chance I’ll fight in the first half of 2015."

Whenever he returns to the cage, "The Spider" does not see himself fighting for the middleweight belt again.

"Anderson’s phase as the champion is over," he said. "Fighting for (the title) is a little far away from me."

Silva, who signed a 10-fight deal with the UFC right before suffering a leg injury against Weidman, expects to retire from the sport before his deal is done.

"I don’t see myself stopping (right now), but I don’t know if I will fulfill my 10-fight contract," he said. "My family has been asking me for years to stop fighting, and they need to understand that this is what I love to do and that I need to have my time. My goal in the sport was to become a reference in this sport, and I’m achieving this."
