MMA Fighter Dies From Injuries Sustained During Fight

South African mixed martial artist Booto Guylain has died due to injuries suffered in a Feb. 27 bout under the Extreme Fighting Championship Africa banner.

EFC Africa officials announced the news Wednesday in a press release on the promoter’s official website.

“Guylain suffered a serious head injury during his MMA bout at EFC Africa 27 last Thursday,” the statement read. “Immediately after the bout, he was stabilized by the on-site medical team and transported to the hospital, where he was treated for swelling and bleeding on the brain. Guylain received care from one of South Africa’s top neurosurgical teams but tragically passed away today.”

Both of Guylain’s professional bouts were contested in the South African promotion. The 29-year-old debuted last November, falling by technical knockout to Shaun de Lange at EFC Africa 25. Guylain then fought in what would prove to be his final outing this past Thursday, suffering a third-round technical knockout at the hands of Keron Davies.

“We are devastated," said EFC Africa President Cairo Howarth in the release. “This is a huge loss to the sport and to all who know him. Our thoughts are with his family in this trying time.”

Guylain is survived by his wife and son, who, according to the release, will receive financial support from EFC Africa disability partner OnePlan. The promotion also announced that all athletes competing at EFC Africa 28 on March 27 will wear black armbands in Guylain’s memory.
