What looked like a simple jab ultimately led Donald Cerrone to a small upset at this past Saturday’s UFC on FOX 11 event, but his opponent, Edson Barboza, said he’d welcome a rematch.
“I just want to fight again as soon as possible,” the Brazilian told MMAjunkie. “If UFC gives me a rematch, I will be there. I want to keep fighting against those guys. I want to fight again soon because I know a have a lot more to show to my fans.”
Barboza (13-2 MMA, 7-2 UFC), show as a slight favorite according to the oddsmakers, walked into a stiff jab from Cerrone (23-6 MMA, 10-3 UFC) in a network-televised bout at UFC on FOX 11 on April 19. When Barboza hit the mat at Orlando’s Amway Center, Cerrone swiftly pounced on him and secured the fight-ending rear-naked choke in the first round (watch the Cerrone vs. Barboza video highlights).
The loss snapped a three-fight winning streak for the 28-year-old.
“It’s hard to talk about that fight,” Barboza said. “I knew I had everything to win that fight. I came hard to finish it. I wanted that win so bad. But God knows everything. I blinked at the exact time that he punched, so I didn’t see the blow. If I had see it, he wouldn’t have dropped me.”
Barboza, whose prolific striking and high offensive outpoint have dazzled fans during his UFC tenure, admitted his aggression got the best of him against the well-rounded Cerrone.
“I am not that type of fighter who will run around the cage waiting for the counter,” he said. “I am hunter. Everyone asks me what makes me an exciting fighter. I think that is why I am an exciting fighter. When I step into the cage, I go to finish it.
“I had 99 percent of the fight in my hands, but it’s MMA. You are wearing four-ounce gloves, so any detail can make the difference.”
He then suggested a rematch would go a different way.
“He had his lucky blow, so good for him,” Barboza said. “Anyway, no matter the result, I’ll prove that I am better than him without a lucky blow.”
