Fresh off his second-round shellacking over Jim Miller at UFC Fight Night 45 earlier this week on FOX Sports 1 (watch it), Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight contender Donald Cerrone will reportedly make a quick turnaround to face off against undefeated sambo specialist Khabib Nurmagomedov at the upcoming UFC 178 pay-per-view (PPV) event, scheduled for Sept. 27, 2014 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Mike Chiapetta brought word of the potential pairing earlier today.
Cerrone (24-6, 1 NC) has been on fire as of late, stringing together four straight wins along with four consecutive finishes. Prior to mauling Miller in Atlantic City, "Cowboy" put the screws to Edson Barboza last April on FOX. A win in "Sin City" could very well earn him the next lightweight title shot.
However...
Nurmagomedov (22-0) has been steamrolling the competition since day one. In addition to making a mockery of the international circuit, "The Eagle" has plowed through six straight under the ZUFFA banner, including Rafael dos Anjos earlier this year in Orlando.
Best card of the year?
UFC 178 will be headlined by the light heavyweight championship rematch pitting Jon Jones against Alexander Gustafsson. Elsewhere on the card, Streaking contenders Tim Kennedy and Yoel Romero go to war in the middleweight division, while Dominick Cruz makes his UFC return against Takeya Mizugaki.
